All Im waiting for is the Mario Kart 7 QL. And yet, It's probably going to be sub-20 minutes and no online gameplay.

coming up

12/4 3:01AM video Quick Look: Mario Kart 7
12/5 8:00AM video Endurance Run: Chrono Trigger - Part 06
12/16 1:00AM Live The End of Star Wars: Galaxies

Pretty painful watching them bitch out the game when Brad was the one who didn't select "Declaration of Independence" properly. When it came up, it only said "Dec" because he didn't hit RT.

Those are the quick select buttons, nobody used those. They all went and manually highlighted the answers throughout the whole quicklook.

Finally got around to this one. Love it when they started freaking out and gushing over the QTEs to form Voltron. :D

"PUSH UP TO FORM VOLTRON!"

Does anyone remember where that "When they form like Voltron, he the head" thing originated from? I know they've said it for a long time, but I don't remember the origin.

It should be noted that the Nintendo Quick Looks are often delayed because of Nintendos own dumb embargos on that sort of thing. That's why it took so long for the Zelda one, despite the fact that game had been out in Europe for a couple weeks by that time.

Not sure if this is the very first instance of it, but Wu-Tang always mentions "forming like Voltron" with Gza being the head. They mention it on their first album (1993).

(unless you mean origin just within Giant Bomb's circle, then just ignore me :P )

Haha Declaration of Independence.

Classic QL moment.

Awesome. Thanks to already having $10 in PSN points, I totally just bought this based on the QL. I seriously cannot believe they have straight up cartoon cuts from the show. It looks like the first four missions are even from the movie I had on VHS that is completely burned into my brain. I cannot wait for this thing to get fully installed.

Nostalgia overload. Time to be Hunk and fuck some dudes up in the yellow lion.

EDIT: Sadly, I just laughed for a solid 2 minutes when I paused the game. Totally didn't expect a "Voltron will be back after these messages!" and "Now, Back to Voltron!" It's probably going to get old after a while.... but man. This is awesome.

I couldn't believe how hard I laughed at the Family Feud quick look. I was in pain I laughed so hard. Oh man. I freaking love these guys.

Yeah, I wish Mario Kart had a compelling single player. I loved the adventure modes in CTR and DKR but that 28 million people who bought MKWii probably don't give a fuck and just want a multiplayer game, which is fine I guess and Nintendo is not about to change that about the series. : /

That...that is awesome. I'm not even a huge fan of Voltron, but I love little touches like that.

Isn't there a near impossible way to dodge the blue shell? I thought there was...

Dodging a Spiny Shell

Mario Kart DS

In Mario Kart DS, there is a trick you can learn that will allow you to dodge Spiny Shells nearly every single time you encounter them. The only real limitation is that you must be able to powerslide, which might not be practical on some parts of certain tracks. Also, you must be playing on 100cc or higher (which includes Wi-Fi).
Dodging shells will be much easier if you have prior knowledge of the shell's existence. If you don't know the Spiny Shell is on the field until you hear it hissing then you'll have to be much quicker to dodge it. Make a habit of scanning the item list on the bottom screen often so you'll have time to prepare after seeing an opponent launch it.

When the shell finally reaches you, it will hover over your kart for about a second, then spin over your head once, and then finally drop quickly and explode. Timing is absolutely crucial here, so pay attention. By the time the shell is hovering over your head and starts spinning, you should have red sparks. As it finishes the spin, it will pause for a split second in midair before it starts to drop. At this point, turn hard in the direction of your powerslide (so if you were sliding to the left, press left to make your turn tighter). Just as the shell drops, release the powerslide and immediately start a new one in the same direction. If done correctly, the speed boost from the mini-turbo combined with the extra hop from the second powerslide will cause the shell to miss and explode harmlessly behind you.

It takes a fairly good amount of practice to be able to pull this off for the first time, and even more practice to get to the point where you'll dodge them without fail every time, but it's totally worth it and it helps a lot in getting 3-star rankings in GP. Check out the video to the right for a more detailed tutorial.

An easier way to dodge the blue shell is to get out of first place before it enters the touch screen.

Mario Kart Double Dash!! and Mario Kart Wii

In Mario Kart Double Dash!! and Mario Kart Wii, it is possible (though difficult) to dodge a Spiny Shell provided you have a Mushroom handy. Just as the shell drops (you literally have just a few split seconds) activate the mushroom. If your timing is right the shell will miss and explode harmlessly behind you, as seen in this video. Unfortunately, it is very rare to have a mushroom in first place, so this trick is of limited usefulness. If this is the case, you might as well take a couple opponents out with you. When you hear the siren, check your rear-view camera and brake and/or swerve to get near one or more opponents. Hopefully they'll be inside the blast radius when the shell takes you out. In Mario Kart Double Dash it is not so smart. In the Rainbow Road, the Blue Shell will sometimes miss and will explode behind you without harm. In Mario Kart Wii, the Blue Shell might also miss you when you enter a cannon in Maple Treeway, DK Summit, Rainbow Road, or DK's Jungle Parkway, provided you entered it at the right time. If the shell continues to make the sound while you are in the cannon and it doesn't explode behind you, you have timed it wrong and the shell will come back for you, although it takes a long time, considering that the distance between the cannon and the destination is usually long.

"...WE SAID 'DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE'!!!!!"

I don't even understand how that one could happen. What a bad game.
He pushed the wrong button and didn't confirm the autocorrect "declaration of independence", just text he had entered so far instead - "dec". You can see the answer displayed in the bubble.

Game is still terrible no doubt, but that was a user mistake.

The issues with blue shells would be fixed if Nintendo got with the times and included a shield powerup like kart racers have been doing forever. It's sad that CTR is still the best one.

Mario Kart 7 is a phenomenal game, which I say as someone who really didn't enjoy the Wii version, but CTR's weapon balance is best in genre stuff. Actually, maybe tied with Blur...
