The Great Female Characters in Gaming

I'd extend that to the entire female cast. I think my favourite is Rita, though.

Kaufman's a pretty awesome npc, too.

Terra and Celes aired their drama out on-stage because watching men deal with depression isn't all that entertaining if you want to keep their characters believable.
Um what, how do you mean?

Men dealing with depression makes for unbelievable characters?

edit: Or oh you mean if the men were dealing with their depression they wouldn't sing it out they would do some brooding and boring shit that wouldn't be entertaining to watch/play? How do men deal with depression? How did the male characters of FFVI deal with depression?

Is it believable for the women to act out their drama on a stage?

Da fuck?

Not bad though.....

Ya, kinda unfair posting a fake picture. But it's very well done and a nice interpretation of her. I assume she's going to look a lot more alien looking.

I kinda doubt it. At the very least she is gonna be very pleasing to look at to satisfy the Tali fandom weirdos.

Men arent considered good characters unless they are manly badasses with no feelings confirmed! Emotions are for the more fragile sex amirite?

I was going to mock him too, but then I thought about it and he's right.

Look at Cloud Strife. Perfect example of a male character that goes into total depression, starts moping around etc. He had perfectly valid reasons to do so, yet you'll see people harp on his character being a wimp constantly.

as much as Bioware tried to slut her up, I still loved Morrigan

She had some serious mommy issues, if you dug deep enough you could see the insecure girl inside her. Love her character and Claudia Black nailed it as always.

Yup.

I'm not going to get into it just now, because shit went absolutely insane...

but my Fallout 3 girl was fucking hardcore.

Yay.

Lulu, because she was the one who held everything together in FFX. Great character.

I came in and thought about it and wanted to post this -- she's the one character I actually liked in FFX and the only thing outside the sphere grid and combat that was worthwhile to me.

What's up with the unmasked Tali pic? Fan work, or did the game get patched?

The second. Setzer did bugger-all for years after Darryl died. Locke wasted all his time trying to hold onto the past. Shadow/
Clyde
wandered around not talking to anyone and listening to Linkin Park.

That's all very boring and takes a long time because, generally speaking, men tend to internalise grief, both in Japan and the West, whereas women are, culturally speaking, freer to express their emotions, which allows for more dramatic resolution - higher highs, lower lows and packed into a shorter timeframe.

Putting the same words that came out of Terra's words into Locke's, however, and the character would seem a bit off. Like it or not, there are different expectations between how women and men react to things. If men visibly react to trauma, people think there's something wrong with them. Not making judgements on this one way or the other - that's just the way people are. If you want a story to be good, your characters need to behave believably.

Besides which, Terra and Celes are the main characters of parts 1 and 2 of FFVI. Of course more of their dirty laundry is going to get aired than, say, Strago.

This also has to do with FFVII's atrocious writing and Cloud's character retcon in AC changing him into an annoying whiner rather than a character that went through actual character growth in VII.

They aren't gonna show Tali. They aren't that stupid.

They have them by the hook. Of course just like promising too much with ME->ME2 story progression and connection, there is no way the reveal can possible live up to all the fandom's hopes and dreams.

That's exactly it, they can't show her or all her mystique vanishes and all you're left with is a storm of powernerds arguing for decades about whether or not they "made her look right". Our own personal "great red spot" on the internet.

Choosing any of the others over her is just foolish.
I was going to mention a character from the first Shining Force, but I forgot my force in that becomes a sausage fest at the end. Shining Force 2 is just as good too.

Cloud Strife was always a bad character. Not because he was a wimp, but rather because he was a wildly inconsistent, uncharismatic Mary Sue with no leadership qualities but who somehow his say-so became required for all the other characters to tie their shoes.

I never said he was a good character, just that they completely reset his character in AC and that has become his default characterization.

Ulala is awesome, she loves to dance, find out the truth and shoot evil things

Vanessa Z. Schneider is great. Cool and grooves as much as ulala:

i also love nozomi:
she is weak and fragile, yet she knows what she wants. but in the end, it is to late and to hard for her to get her act together.

so cute.

It's especially apparent in Dissidia; where one of his victory quotes is, "I won't sleep well tonight...." :lol

To be fair, Terra is hardly any better. "Thank you for the fight" and "I was so...frightened" are also pretty indicative of her shitty characterization in Dissidia.

Maybe I just skimmed too quickly and missed them, but if not:
No, they just weren't posted because they're terrible.

Well, at least Peach has a pretty fun game in her favor. So there's that.
