The Halo 3 Beta Thread

are you reporting the games?

Yes. :) Also everyone in my team reported the players. If they keep getting reported it will stick out in Bungie's tracking system for catching cheaters. Also, I'll be checking Bungie.net forums to see if the issue has been raised yet. But, I'm sure it has. If we all work togeather when we play against people that cheat it hopefully should insure the final game is even better.

I think the nades are fine. My biggest complaint about them would be that I get killed from beyond the grave waaaay too often after taking someone out.

Dead man's (L) trigger! :D

If my shields go and I'm in a clusterf**k I unload as many nades as I can!

Bwoh, melee-attacks are so weird sometimes. On High-Ground, I pass the big chaingun and I see an enemy looking up to the Spartan Laser tower. So I shoot him a few times with the AR, then I bash him. He then bashed me back with the Carbine and insta-killed me. I saved the film and he never fired a shot at me. So weird.

Speaking of melee-attacks, I really hate the 'lunge' every melee attack does. More times then not, the enemy survives the bash, only to have my back turned to them and getting assasinated in return.

Just played a rumble training game where the other five people were in a party and they were all trying to gang up on me. Ended up winning still, even though they were canibalizing each other at every second. Even heard one say "quick dude, let me kill you so I can beat him." Sad...

was he jumping, and did he hit you square in the face? both those things affect melee damage.

I kind of feel melee is a bit overpowered in this one, seems slightly more powerful than it was in Halo 2, too (if I remember right).

I'm not sure how I feel about it because it's not as bad as something like GoW with the chainsaw where everything is always tight and the chainsaw is absolute and the lag is worse.

I just don't like it when lag affects melee for me to my disadvantage.

Hm, I really don't want an over the head mic as it gets too overbearing after a few hours of gaming for me. =/ How are the in ear series? I'm afraid of wobblyness like previous in ear designs.

While I don't own the this one here. I did own the Halo 2 headset which was very similar and I tried this new one on at my work briefly. They are very similar, however the newer one has a much better feel as the bottom rubber part grabs the bottom of your ear. I could use this headset, its not as in the ear as most headsets are (meaning its not going in too deep).

AR's melee can sometimes be flaky. What you should have done is:

Shot him hit the melee button and kept the right trigger held down. More often then not you'll pop off a few shots to finish him off.

Speaking of melee-attacks, I really hate the 'lunge' every melee attack does. More times then not, the enemy survives the bash, only to have my back turned to them and getting assasinated in return.

He most likely side stepped you. It also could have been due to some lag.

It does. You can always tell who has one because it sounds like they are riding in a helicopter.

"Hey, your wireless mic is freaking out."

I have the wireless headset and have no such issues.

Oh, I'm sure there are plenty that work just fine. I do know that there are tons of people reporting issues with them though, and when players using them sound like their riding with Arnold, taking out the unarmed masses on their way toward game show fame, they are always oblivious. To them, everything sounds a-okay. It's the other players that hear all the feedback.

Indeed. Garnett heaped praise on High Ground in the latest 1up Yours podcast, and I was glad to hear someone calling it out. He described it as a very sophisticated map - and it is. At it's heart the map is very simple - a beach, a wall and a base. But the sheer number of routes through that base, the meticulously calculated sight-lines to the flag, the weapon placement....it's incredibly sharp level design. Giving the defending team a Mongoose is one of Bungie's best design decisions, as that gives the defenders a shot at getting back into the fight when the flag is a ways toward the beach. raYne's awesome story above is a great example of that. It's a brilliant map.
I was surprised to hear that from Garnett considering Halo doesn't really "click" with him, but he was right on. High Ground is a REALLY well designed map, not only for the gametypes, but also for the equipment.

So, has anything exciting happened in this thread while I was out?

I agree, the nades are very powerful.
The only thing I dislike is that players have lost all incentive to use the plasma nade, the brute nade owns it.

BIG QUESTION:
Will we be able to watch our videos after the beta ends?
A mate of mine will be unable to play but I still want to show him some of my matches.

People don't use the plasmas because there are so few now. TONS of frags (usually from people dying) tons of spike grenades.

I can think of dozens of locations of both of those types in nearly every map and I don't know where a single plasma grenade spawns (but I have picked them up by accident).

You need to jump just as you land the last shot to kill them. You will almost every time avoid being killed beyond the grave.

I'd much rather get killed from the grave then lay down a final frag, only to watch my opponent walk right through the center of the blast while reloading and carry on as if nothing had happened at all. I'm looking at you, launch Halo 2.

You just reminded me of something. I threw a nade at this dude as he was using the GRAV LIFT and he got skyrocketed into the air. It was hysterical.

lol

Had a guy try to laser me on High round, leaping off his perk only to find that I had just laid down the gravity lift. He sprung high into the air, missing me completely, and came down ona frag that I tossed his way.

I hope you saved it to your film collection. :lol

I think the menu item for launching H3 in crackdown will be removed when the beta ends. :( In the perfect world Bungie would just disable match making and let us relive all the videos we saved till H3 comes out.

it feels fine true, but it works like ass.

i have people complain they can't hear all the time and it seems to cut off in the middle of everything i say.

the ear piece seems to work ok.

i think when the full version is released i might have to try out the wirless one.

i wonder if the final version will let you hold more then 2 of each grenade?

3 would be fine i think a total of 9.

sucks going from 8 grenades to a total of only 7 if lucky.

So I should be getting my x360 back this week, what can I expect in terms of obnoxious headset users? The usual white supremacist sweaty 13-15 year olds, or is the beta crowd more tame? In other words, should I bother wearing a headset or not?

Much better than your standard Live fare right now.

Yep. Every game I've had since last Friday has been great, no quitters, no racist pricks, and I've actually added a couple of new people to my friends list after some fun rumbles. I have no illusions that it'll last, but I'm enjoying myself in non-GAF Live gaming for the first time in a long time. Kudos to the community.

Now if only I could stop getting my ass handed to me on a plate.

I've managed to play around 3 or 4 hours of this so far. More fun than I remember Halo 2 MP being .

Unfortunatly I think I simply keep getting unlucky. I'll chase down a guy or get into a 3 way firefight. I'll take them out and then get shot in the back by some guy who just respawned. :(

Priorities in players irritate me. Kill the guy on the vehicle and then try to kill me. I'm doing my best to bring the killing machine down so stop shooting me in the back and help out!

Graphically this game is amazing. The shader and lighting work is some of the best on the 360. The ice and the snow especially. I love the restrained but effective HDR lighting and adore the water effects.

I've gotten so many Unsporting feedbacks when I don't do anything wrong. People are sore losers. I leave quite a bit of bad feedback for the people who have been trash talking so much. Played oddball in Snowbound, guy just stands at the shield door and beats people down. Then he's like "DONKEY PUNCH BITCH!"

I get into those fights, the worst are when you do 90% damage to someone, and someone else pops up and kills you both. Happens to me tons.

I like the clean yet detailed look to the graphics. Back a while MS was doing a big tech conference on graphics, and Bungie talked about implementing HDR, went REALLY in detail. I think a lot of devs don't 'get' HDR fully yet.

Yes, it sucks that sore losers need to abuse the system like that.

Back in the H2 days, after a game you would a lot of the time run into teams that would say I'm reporting you mother****** just because they lost a game, or even worse tied.

If you think it's bad at the moment, just wait for the final game. If you want to play a lot of ranked games, you're going to have to accept that people will give you bad feedback just because you won. Sad but true.

Then he's like "DONKEY PUNCH BITCH!"

:lol that's pretty tame for halo standards. It can get A LOT worse.

Oh I know, I've heard it all over the years on Halo. I know there's going to be a serious abuse of the feedback system come Halo 3. I think what we need to do is just leave good feedback on the people that we play with who say "good game" at the end or something like that. It might take a lot longer, but there isn't going to be anybody with any kind of decent reputation by the end of the year.

I'm sure you're speaking in hyperbole. You don't really believe that, do you? With the thousands upon thousands of people playing this game, there are relatively few bad apples out there. The law of averages will ensure that the feedback system works, I'm very confident that it will. Having said that, some mu****in' douchebags were in my grill the past three rounds I went. Shit was frustraitin'.

Man we had some great GAF matches last night with Hitler Stole My Potato, Luva Luva, exmodel and some more guys I can't remember ( I was high, dont kill me ) :lol

I saved the movies and will upload tomorrow, so if anyone wants to see em just add me :

a newspaper here reviewed the Halo 3 beta. for the screenshot they photoshopped some Halo 2 models over a Half Life 2 map (the boathouse). they didn't even bother to add the HUD.

My gamer rep was around 90 percent, now it's down to 68 percent. That's just from the 70-ish games I've played. And I hardly talk anything and don't teabag unless it's with buddies or I get teabagged first.
