Remove the period from in front of .img and replace GAMERTAG with your XBL gamertag, and you're done. Use the Preview Post button to see if you've got it right.

Are overshields and invisibility still in the game?

Camo showed up in the leaked beta videos, so most likely.

There was talk of the powerups having traits that you could change (like giving super speed or even making a 'power down') but that isn't something we would see until the final game, if at all.

Updated gamertags on the first page through post 357. Give the 19 new additions some Friends list lovin'.

No new additions to the OP today. But one day closer to Friday. :D

In via Crackdown

btw, i didn't read through the pages but Spike on friday at 1 am has a special on the beta.

edit:
Halo 3 Beta Special
Friday May 11, 1AM

Its on Game Head, no idea what timezone

I hope the new halo 2 maps aren't added to matchmaking until the Halo 3 beta hits... I'm trying to get some practice in on Halo 2 and I can't buy the maps since the old system doesn't accept MS points.

Thank you for the post with gamertags. :)

I re-watched the first leaked vid of Last Resort, the decent quality one. I can't wait for next week. This game is going to suck away so much life from me it'll be pitiful.

You know what's funny? The crappy shaky cam leak impressed me more than the direct feed because he actually zooms in on the screen and you can see how damn detailed the game really is. You lose that with the other one.

They're going in this week, afaik.

Last Resort (or Epitaph for that matter) won't be in the beta we play.

Also, to clarify, there's a lot of people who are claiming that Spike TV's GameHead exclusive is at 1am Friday. That's not accurate. It's actually at 1am EST on 05/12 (the night of the 11th, yes, but not the 11th). The website's schedule page is confusing because of their daily program schedule being less than 24 hours.

I'll be there through Crackdown.

How do people get custom icons in their gamercard? I thought this was only possible using the Live Vision Camera.

Oh, and I should mention that while we did pick about 30000 Bungie.net accounts (out of half a million active ones) that qualified for our random selection of people to get codes, we also added in about 5000 people who were selected because of some criteria based on their Halo 2 playing.

So 35,000, from which the F&F will be selected. Not sure how many of those will be picked.

(Spotted over at HBO.)

So if I pick up Crackdown before the beta starts, am I still in, or is there a limit/expiry date?

As long as you have a specially marked copy, you're in.

SonnyBoy said:
I'm hopping in on the tail end of this, who's getting selected for what and when?

Specially marked Bungie.net members will be selected from a special pool of 35,000 special people that did not make the original special list of Friends & Family.

In addition to the public methods to get into the Beta (halo3 site, Rule of 3 promotion and Crackdown) Bungie is hand-picking members from their online forum and varous other online communities (like HBO) to participate. They're calling those individual selections their Friends and Family Program, and they get to start on the 11th rather than the 16th, partly as a reward for being active in their respective Halo communities and partly to help ramp-up the Beta from the small internal pool to the public one. There's some info about it in the OP from Bungie.

Also, not really related but since some folks were heckling Stinkles for an update:

As we promised in the Weekly Update this Friday past, the Blastacular map pack has been updated to remove the superjumps and invisible walls that would have caused no end of misery in Matchmaking. That’s the good news. The bad news is that you will have to download them again to overwrite your old map files with the new, corrected ones. These will be required to play in matchmaking. The “old” maps will continue to function until then, or until you try to match with someone using the updated maps. Simplest solution? Go get ‘em.

The new maps can be found by simply returning to the content download screen from the main menu in Halo 2, and repeating the process you already used to download them the first time. We know this is a pain. Sorry.

NOTE: You will not be charged again if you already bought these maps.

You will be charged if for some reason you were not charged last time.

Remember - the maps are tied to your console, not your Gamertag. If you try to download to another console, you will be charged again.

We do apologize for this inconvenience. For some of you it’s a minor irritation, for some of you it’s the end to a long and annoying ordeal. Either way, we thank you for your patience and your understanding.

So the playlist is probably coming Thursday at the earliest, since they said they'd space the new maps re-releases out a bit from the MM list...bah. :(

Nevermind.
Hah, just spotted the edit. My original post said something to the effect of, "there's 35,000 b.net'ers in the F&F program!". Then I clicked on the second post in that thread. :p

Hehe. Yeah. I clicked the link and got a bit excited. Oh well.

By the way, how long has the countdown on the B.net frontpage been up? It's funny to think I'm more stoked for a beta than I've been for a full game in a long, long time.

I only noticed the countdown today, though it could have gone up earlier.

7 days, 12 hrs, 31 mins, and 59 secs until the Halo 3 Public Beta begins!

That's too long, dammit. :(

The degree I'm hyped for this Beta is higher than I was for Halo 2. And I waited in line for five hours for the midnight launch for that one.

wtf it says 7 days, 9 hours, 30 minutes for me

argh

i guess it's 5 AM PST time it's meant for... they just casually forgot that the majority of their audience doesn't live in the PST time zone and that not everyone's computer is set to bungie time :P

I'm just stoked for the media blowout on Friday more than anything, I wanna see how the game has come along and not be looking at an Alpha screenshot or blurry shaky cam footage :P

The comparison between Alpha and Beta shots should be interesting, to say the least. I suspect Halo 3 is going to be a poster child for "don't judge unfinished games graphics".

I predict the Beta will look slightly better than the Alpha build but nothing mindblowing.

Of course when the media is released, extremists from both sides will spin to their heart's content.

"WOW THIS LOOKS 100X TIMES BETTER THAN ALPHA"

"WOW THIS LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME AS ALPHA, HALO 2.5"

I predict it's not going to matter in the end because the gameplay will sell itself. You can take that to the bank.

Bungie is unveiling the Beta to the Media this Friday. There's two events, one on the west coast, one on the east. We're expecting lots o coverage.

I don't think it will look like a whole new engine or anything crazy. But just hearing the improvments - textures, lighting, decorators, water, etc. - added since the Alpha should make a noticable difference.

I do think those who say the Alpha screens look like Halo 2.5 or something are on crack. I've never claimed the shots looked the best, but they do look pretty good, especially when compared to Halo 2.

Halo 3:

Halo 2:

The Halo 2.5 line, even against the Alpha screens, don't hold water. But I digress.

I'm hoping, a day or two into the Beta, we're not talking about graphics at all. We'll be talking about gameplay, and awesome saved films, all that jazz. At the end of the day, that's what it's all about.

Yeah, I'm grateful that Bungie is giving the general public a glimpse of the multiplayer shenanigans that'll be in store this fall, but I have to say, having the Beta end after three weeks is going to make the remainder of wait unbearable. Like being weaned off the food nipple when you're not ready. Still, it's nice to have a good bearing on what to expect this fall. I can't believe that in a week's time, we'll be playing Halo 3. It's only just starting to sink in now that we're this close. This week can't get over soon enough, but the next three are going to fly by.

I remember going into the H2 launch having deliberately kept away from most impressions and spoilers. I though that waiting in line that night, just hours away from launch, was hard-- until the jackass EB clerks set up a trio of TVs in front of the window, set up a LAN and started playing the ****ing game right in front of all of us in line. How we managed to restrain ourselves from breaking down the doors and lynching those fools is beyond me. :lol

Friday is May 11th. There is an event going on that day which is exclusive to the press. I am sure thats what they are talking about.

I just realized the OP was missing that information. It was there originally, but when the OP imploded because of the size limitation I must have neglected to add it back in. It's kinda important so apologies for the gap.

Here's the notice sent to the media:

You're right. Trade in Crackdown ASAP. Let someone who's actually going to value the beta a chance to play.

Three weeks, to be precise. We knew all along it would be a temporary event, but I was suprised it was that short. That's just how long it will take to gather the data Bungie needs to finish the game.

I've been saying all along that Crackdown should be purchased on its own merits, with the Beta as a bonus. I still believe that.
