The Halo 3 Beta Thread

The video was great. The spartan laser looks wayyyyyyyyyy overpowered, though. It's practically a one hit kill with a 2x scope.

well you need to time it perfectly... and aim it perfectly.

It has 5 shots, and afterwards it has a cool down time so you're completely vulnerable after it fires.

I feel the same, but gameplay wise it looks absolutely awesome. The video looks very smooth, and its nice to see someone playing Halo 3 who doesn't suck :D

Just so glad I'm able to play the beta, Halo 3 is gonna own me.

I think it looks easy enough for anyone to get a body shot with it. The cool down time is good, on the other hand.

Yup, and I assume the guy with the red star over his head that he killed on the hill is the VIP...
 
i cant get over just how incredibly fun that looks. very well done video, shame there isnt a 720p version. i guess we'll just have to wait till tomorrow for something like that (though i doubt it will showcase such skill)

There was an Escort mode in the multiplayer vidoc, wondering if this is the same thing and it's just been renamed or if this is a different mode.

you have to load the beta from the crackdown menu... so you'll only be able to play during the time you've got crackdown rented out - assuming... the rental copy has access to the beta

So don't go on the mancannon? It isn't any different from knowing you're an easy target to snipers by launching off one. Or the normal anti grav pads for that matter. Or chasing someone through a teleporter etc.

Yup - the Plasma icon is what threw me off the first couple of times...

Well, you have to have some sort of balance to it - it's the Bungie way - look how much ground you cover... it would be way too easy otherwsie...

Just don't use it so that you won't be sniped/grenaded by MrJukes... heh

all good points, but it would be interesting if you had some sort of control on where you landed, not talking about wild gliding but some ability to drift right or left or drop early somehow.

I see what you mean, but I'm pretty sure you can fire while in mid-air so the person flying could've killed him.

The man cannon is supposed to have trade-offs, it gets you where you need to go quickly but you are vulnerable while using it. No different from the gravity lifts in Halo 2 really (which make a noise so people know you're using them etc).
 
The entire IDEA behind the man cannon is that it's more dangerous than the teleporter from the first two games. You want to take a shortcut accross the map? "Pull!" It's going to require some teamwork ("you go first!") and no small element of risk.

I streamed the video over to the 360 for effect. Looks awesome. :D
 
It's not really impressive graphically, but it does seem to get the important things right - building this huge world where these amazing firefights can take place.

There's a second mancannon that goes to the right side of the base.

Mongoose can FLY!! (well portable gravity lifts it up high, but come on... ITS FLYING!!!!)

I'm going to watch it another 5 times, so so AWESOME.

Yeah, I'd think that the man-cannon would mainly be used at the start of the match, then later only in specific situations when communicating with your team, such as there being a big firefight in the middle of the map.
 
I'm glad Bungie finally realized people want to see stuff like this... actual playing. Maybe the crappy camera work on the leaked videos finally got to them.

best thing in the whole vid for me, I'm gonna have so much fun with that, its one of reasons I love Halo is you can muck about with the game mechanics. :D
 
How are people not impressed graphically??? It looks gorgeous for halo. When you close up on a spartan, it looks like there is some form of GI (Global illumination)

wow.
 
I've watched this so many times...the HUD is so slick how everything pops up on the screen, really nice subtle change. I love when he throws the mine down and then puts a plasma on it for a huge explosion...the Beta cannot come soon enough!

I know, we are looking at a 480p video and people judge it. I'm used to it though.
 
Saw the whole thing - WOW! :D

Brute Shot looks great now. More powerful, especially up close.

Mongoose looks like it will be amazing to drive around. :)

this kind of tactic is used all the time on the lifts and the "mancannon" on ascension (the halo 2 map)
 
video looks awesome, and props again to luke as our new bungie punching bag.

maybe I read something wrong, but was this video created entirely with the save game feature? does that mean it has tools for editing, picture-in-picture, text creation and a custom soundtrack? if so, I'm super impressed!
 
Yea, using the one on Ascension is pretty much suicide too, nothing new really...only time I could see myself using the cannon is when the flag is midway or something and it's about to return but you need to touch it real quick, something like that :lol

The graphics in the vid don't look that impressive, but the gameplay looks fun. I'm glad they used a good player to show it off. I want to play right now! ><

I don't see the big deal with the laser, it has 5 shots, and the guy using it was very good, I doubt your average player is going to run around wrecking shit with it as well as he did.
 
question about the laser, when its in cool down mode can you switch weapons ? what if they were forced to keep it equipped and make you then pretty much unarmed for the duration of the cool down.

heh I really shouldn't be making these observations until i've played it but I cant help it. :lol
