The Halo 3 Beta Thread

btw guys this is still the internal beta - NOT the public beta.

i think bungie is not only hiding single player... but multiplayer too...

we're just getting a little taste. They probably have a few weapons, a few vehicles, and a few more gametypes hiding in their wings.

I seem to recall a pretty fair balance of SP and MP screenshots prior to the release of the first game.

With Halo 2, we didn't get much official media of the game's SP Campaign 'til very close to launch. Seems like it'll be the same case for Halo 3.

huh? The first gameplay trailer ever released for Halo 2 was a 7 minute long campaign teaser.

Granted it was fake, but still...

Yeah, I know. But when did they start to release shots of the Campaign? I completly forget. I'm not quite crazy enough to believe this is what the Single player game will look like.

At the same time knowing this, I don't want to set myself up for dissapointment.

Aside from the scrapped E3 demo, we only saw Halo 2's campaign in the EGM before the game came out, which was in October, IIRC.

That's the only thing that came to my mind also. Sooooo, August it is then ;)
 
Man, so torn about this footage.

Graphics: this is badly captured 4:3 SD footage (which still looks pretty good actually). I'll reserve judgment til i get some proper HD media.

gameplay: it's Halo alright, which isn't a bad thing but I was expecting something ..... more.

Some new weapons, some new vehicles and gadgets but nothing all that .... different. I'll assume at this point that Bungie is holding back some gameplay features.

The game looks like it runs beautifully. And that's huge.

Looking forward to the beta.

also a poll: who is jumping right into multiplayer? And who is finishing the singleplayer before jumping into MP?

I haven't decided what I'm gonna do yet, but I'll very likely jump into MP straight away because I won't be able to hold off.

with gameplay, if they added "more" it wouldnt be halo anymore. they have to keep the gameplay the same.

theres a reason counterstrike has been played for so many years.
 
everything ive seen on halo 3 visuals (YES I KNOW ITS NOT CAPTURED IN HD) looks very...bland.



everything ive seen on halo 3 beta gameplay looks....like halo 2 but a bit faster and with some extra stuff.



i really hope halo 3s campaign gives us something new
 
What did you people expect? The gameplay is awesome, why change it? I can already see it, a week into the Beta, GAF will have moved on to the next flavor of the week, much like the Halo 2 clan...:lol

It needs to still be Halo. It's the core Halo gameplay, with new toys, tweaks and twists. Ya don't break what's not broken, but you can make it deeper and more interesting.

I honestly like the lighting. HDR is being overused. Seeing some of those backgrounds reminds me of the lighting in Motorstorm. Not overdone, just right, and gets the job done.

Definitely agree. At times, the HDR in Gears is pretty garish by comparison. I like the lighting a lot in these videos.
 
ok, i must admit, i'm wearing halo googles. it looks phenominal to me. easily among the best weve seen of next-gen so far, and this is just multiplayer. i LOVE the 3d grass, the scale, and the look. maybe i'm just a halo fanboy and i'd like anything bungie gives me... i'm fine with that. still looks shit hot IMO

Lighting is sooo good, like the opening where the mon-goose gets cooked and you see the flaming wreckage light the tree as it goes past. Not to mention the blue tinged explosions. Awesome physics on the 'goose looks like it should be as fun as the first halos warthog.

"Killjoy" is a new comment for ending killing sprees? nice :D

This is looking great, the clairity reminds me of halo 1 something that was missing I felt from Halo 2 MP.
 
+ Non-lock-on rockets. The rocket gameplay will no doubt feel more like Halo 1 - a good thing.
+ Faster speed/pacing. Halo 2 felt like you were walking thru sludge. This looks much better.
+ Carry items. Grav lift and mine looks awesome.
+ Mongoose jumping with grav lift. This could open a WORLD of strategy for team based games. You can plan out ahead of time a way to set up jumps to get the flagman over obstacles or even over flanks of enemies. I wonder if it will jump hogs as well (or covenant vehicles for that matter).

has this been confirmed to be running at 30fps? even from a video encoded at 30fps it looks a LOT smoother and faster than halo 2

And a quick reminder, because I honestly don't see it mentioned much here: Player speed and gravity, amongst other things, can be adjusted for custom gametypes. Those player traits are going to open up a lot of possibilities for Halo's multiplayer.

oh snap! I completely forgot about being able to tweak those kinds of options.
 
Concerns:
-I'm on my Mac, and I don't have a GIF workflow worked out for OS X, but it looks an awful lot like 1p threw a plasma at one point, and it blew up, and then somebody fell into the explosion from above and died. That's a pretty big change if the grenade damage is no longer instant!
-These levels are looking too complicated for Halo. There's a lot to be said for a Wizard or a Blood Gulch or a Chill Out.
-Still worried about the thin thin field of view.
-Still worried about no fall damage.

I will play the shit out of this, though. Can't wait.

So awesome. I forgot all about that too.

Honestly, this game looks like it takes the very best aspects of Halo and Halo 2, throws in cool new features and content, dips it in dark chocolate and serves it with fine alcohol.
