The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Video was ****-awesome. I think it looked really nice graphically, anyone saying otherwise probably hasn't played Halo 2 recently. It looked really good and looks like it runs very smoothly.

I agree. I said the same thing when the alpha shots were released. Then I played Halo 2 and realized how wrong I was to say the least.

:lol

Wow. very impressive. Dare I say that SD multiplayer footage in beta form is amongst the best ive seen graphically this gen? Textures, lighting, fluidity, no jaggies, great effect, great atmostphere, foilage etc, man cant effin wait!

Same lighting from Halo 2. I see no HDR.

Too bad the entire game uses HDR then.

It's toned down in MP for gameplay reasons. Coming out of a dark cave into blinding sunshine = ownage. Nobody wants a simulation of real life. Half of us would have a heart attack running up from that beach.

When I play Halo I barely even notice the graphics. Same with these Halo 3 videos.

Yes I agree it doesn't wow me graphically... but I really don't care. Game is just too fun.

Needs HDR, motion blur and a depth of field effect on zooming.
You're going to dwell on that the whole time huh?

As I said, we already went through this. HDR is already in the game and will be used sparingly in MP and be more prominent in SP because it impairs the players sight. As for motion blur and DOF, no it doesn't.. for the same reasons.

edit:
:lol I see Stinkles already explained it.

Frank, help me out here. Is the gras fully volumetric 3D grass like in Fifa, or is the grass just sparse flat textures?

Gears of War just got chainsawed. Bungie is incredible, it looks like they nailed it, 100%. Hey Frankie all those threads about Halo 2.5, how does it feel to finally show this? Or better yet, what does the MC look like watching all the haters eating crow?

Does anyone know of the Beta supports LAN mutiplayer?

A Halo 3 LAN party NEXT WEEK would be awesome! :D

Halo 3 beta is Live/Matchmaking only.

No customs. No System Link.

Or how about if it supports single player running-around-the-maps-by-yourself mode? I kinda want to get the hang of the controls before being pitted against the mob!

:D

You know what has tons of awesome screenshots, but the screens don't feature HDR? GEARS.

All they would have to do to impress you is increase the resolution of every texture in the game x 3494327974329.

That's it. You'd all be blown away. I'm serious.

Question for Frankie, if you're out there in GAF-land tonight.

How extensive will the XP/ranking system be in the Beta? Will it function more or less how it's currently intended to come Fall?

Also, are games going to stat tracked on Bungie.net, if only for the duration of the Beta?

XP are called RP (rating points), because XP indicates some improvement in ability and equipment, ike an RPG. Your ability is tied to your skill level. Both are 99% functional in the Beta, but medals are not as comprehensive as the final game and there are no achievements.

so the whole number ranking system is dropped in halo 3?

man how will that feed my short attention span?

Thanks for the praise, but it's nothing like Gears. The comparison makes no sense. Both games have an utterly different aesthetic and scale. I doubt Ciffy B is losing any sleep (on his pillow stuffed with hundred dollar bills), and neither are we. Well, apart from crunching.

Honestly, you may as well compare it with a driving game.

How can you people be talking about the graphics so much (which looked amazing btw) when the SOUND is so ****ing good. The SOUNDS in the game are ****ing insane. I think more people need to appreciate how good Halo games sound compared to other games, especially Halo 3's sounds so far. ****ing awesome work. Anyone who listens to a custom soundtrack while playing this game should be slapped.

No - both are there. Go into a matchmaking lobby, see a guy with a low skill level for that matchmaking playlist, but note his experience via rating points. He might not have played much Team Slayer, but you'll see he's no scrub.

Also helps us deal with de-levelers and so on. You cannot delevel your XP.

Geddit?

Would this be an appropriate place to bitch about the new Halo 2 maps?

More specifically the fact that if you don't have them you can't play ANY game types that use those maps (regardless of whether or not the actual game you are about to play uses a map you do have).

I don't know if this is how it was for the previous map packs as I got the game at release, lost interest before any of the other map packs came out, and they were all free when I got back into it. But whatever, this is utterly disgraceful and I'll never be buying another Bungie product. I mean, really guys, how hard is it to simply prevent me from joining a specific GAME that has one of the new maps selected as opposed to banning me from the entire game type when 90% of the matches will be using old maps! ****ing ridiculous.

I will try out Halo 3 beta simply because I paid ~45 dollars to do so (I was mildly interested in Crackdown, but knew from the demo it didn't have enough content to justify a full purchase in and of itself)

The sound effects sound better too, than Halo 2 as best as I can remember. The weapons sound like they have a lot more umph to them.

Please no motion blur or DoF. Give me the best most precise pixels you can - I need all the help I can get in picking fools out and picking fools off!

I'd be really interested to hear why Bungie is sticking with such a small FOV.
by "really interested to hear why" I mean I don't like at all :(

Here's a better question:

Will the XP/levels gained carry over from the Beta to the final, or is there a planned reset?

When he slaps the clip into the sniper it makes me piss my pants.

The high pitched winding before a plasma grenade explodes is a very nice touch.

Point taken. I love gears (a little less after the last patch though), I'm mainly talking about gaming hours spent, and mine are all going to this.

FOV in that video = 4:3

Play 16:9 at 1080p (scaled, bitches) for great justice.

sounds like crimson skies, where you might be a dot in wild chicken because you're just in there screwing around but overall you are a star. frankly, i like the sound of the xp system but i haven't been following it much. will you be factoring it into matchmaking so that true scrubs are actually matched with other true scrubs?

Yeah, it's no Gears. It's no GRAW either. It's no Bioshock, no Oblivion, and no Alan Wake either. This is what I would expect if Halo 3 was on Xbox. Bungie was playing too much time playing volleyball again and not Halo 3 look like a next gen game.

omg <3

yeesssss

i was sorta worried after the leak that it was all dependant on that one sheet (military rank and XP)... now that we're still aiming for the top in the playlists makes me super happy

I couldn't agree more, the sounds definitely stood out to me, from the laser to the sound of the shotgun being pumped. It all sounds great.
