The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Took me several hours to dl the beta earlier. I sat in front of my PC sloooowly watching the percentage go up, ahaha. Worth the wait, though.

So many praising the sound when there is no lossless or 7.1. ;)

The actual sound design and the mixing algorithms are so much more important, so it's not surprising.

In the write up someone posted here earlier, the person said it was about the same as in Halo 2. Any way, what's more important is they got rid of that awful, plain beam effect and now turned it into an awesome beam effect :lol

So the battle rifle sought to combine the pistol and assault rifle, so now that those are both back what purpose does the BR serve?

Pistol is not back. It's still the balanced version.
 
Can someone tell me if there is still one single "host" connection like in Halo 2? Ya know, only the guy with host can rocket / grenade jump, etc.

Was just wondering if everybody has this ability, cause that would rock so much.

The BR is more of a mid - long range weapon, I take it, while the AR and pistol are close - mid range, but the pistol is dual wieldable, so they all have their purposes.

From what I understand, the netcode has changed (in terms of how games are hosted), but I a) can't confirm that or b) tell what the implications of such a change would be.

One game Ghaleon and I played lagged out. I think it was one individual's connection though. The game literally quit and exited on us back to the lobby. That was the only game I've played with any problem.

But the download speeds are blazing.
 
Stinkles...Is the Game Head episode still worth watching for new info or has this onslaught of videos and information taken all of the steam away from the show?

I don't think we'll see any new gameplay stuff, but Game Head is actually visting Bungie Studios which isn't exactly common. It'll be worth a watch I think.
 
How much space does the saved film videos take up?

I'm deciding whether i need to buy the elite or maybe just another HD

Very, very little. It doesn't save it as a video but as a sequence of events, much like PC FPS games. This let's you view the battle from all different angles, etc.

Ah I see, great. The reason for asking was more of an "out of curiousity" question rather than a decision maker for me since I am going to watch it anyways. Thanks for the reply Sean.

Okay, so the match is over, and we're checking out the new Saved Film feature. It looks really early right now and there aren't any controls available, so you can't manipulate the playback -- you can only watch the match linearly. But, it's impressive that our 14 minute long match only produced a meager 2.4MB Saved Film file. If the controls meet the standards put forth by Bungie (editing tools are promised) this is going to take trash-talking to a whole new level. -- Rob

BR is more accurate with longer range. If i strafe with a BR i wont miss nearly as much as you trying to hit me with a AR.

Also, Bungie why did you have to add so many lame weapons to the game? CE was simple, few weapons, all leet. Halo 3 is gonna have lazers? come on, lazers? thats some star wars **** right there.

but seriously, i hope theres a hardcore gametype for us MLG because i cant stand lazers and cheesy weapons. stinkles, AR with BR secondary for hardcore. make it happen.

How do you ever feel any satisfaction by cheating? There's no value or meat to it, just plain unfair.

Anyhow, I'm hoping we can get some cool post game stats like Perfect Dark. ;)

dude i HATE cheating. HATE IT.

and thats exactly why i feel that exploits like BXR and BXB are not cheating whilst standby and modding are.
 
I don't think the laser is cheesy at all, other than the name (Spartan Laser). They made it look very human, and well, just awesome. My favorite of all the new weapons so far.

When I first heard about it, however, I was wondering wtf Bungie I was thinking, I suppose I shouldn't have doubted them.

well thats part of the reason i hate it; its called a Spartan Laser.

no joke, if it was called like a Beam Rifle my opinion would change by about 60%, give or take 10.

~30 minutes to download the Beta.

One game lagged out, one hung for a bit, but every other game has been pretty much lag-free.

I'll update the OP with videos and impressions posted in the past ten pages or so before the night is up.
 
i guess the best host net code algorithms havent been worked out yet.

oh god im getting such a CE gameplay vibe from some of the gametrailers videos.

blimblims videos were great to show the visuals, but he's not that great a player or he simply wasnt trying.

By his logic...because he hates cheating so much, he doesn't want to believe the glitches he uses are cheating, therefore they are not cheating. Wow...

Everything has been running smooth. One match on Valhalla was really laggy, especially while using the man cannons it started warping a lot, sometimes i wouldn't even fly very far. Other than that everything seems good. Halo 2 will never be the same after playing this beta, I love it.
