The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Yeah, the impressions were catered to their playstyle. I just really detest MLG and some of the things like complaining about not having a starting weapon that can kill anything irritated me.

well thats funny because what would irritate you more is if you played any of the top 64, or any MLG players for that matter; you spawning with an smg and they holding a BR, i wonder how you would feel spawn trapped never being able to properly defend yourself.

thats the biggest complain, in Halo 2 everyone initially started with a smg, the most useless weapon ever. if the other team held absolutely any other weapon in Halo 2 as you spawned, you would be destroyed.

halo ce was made great because bungie did everything right when it came to weapon balancing.

It's amazing how much talk there is about racism on Xbox LIVE and the use of the dreaded "n-word" but hardly anything is ever mentioned about this kind of racism. I'm from the south and it seems like half the games I enter a night, somebody always starts something about how stupid I am or how I have sex with my mother or something stupid like that. To me, "hick" and all that other stuff is just as bad as the dreaded "n-word."

Didn't we have this discussion earlier in the thread? Halo: Combat Evolved was about how much one person can do in a game. Halo 2 needs teamwork. You need to control the maps, control the weapons and use STRATEGY.

The SMG was a **** up of a start, but BR starts, while not as bad, swing the pendelum to the other side of the spectrum. I played Tombstone Assault last night. The only weapon that was used other than BRs was the sniper. You could have no weapons on the map and I would guarantee you the game would play nearly the same way.

That's boring gameplay. That's not fun. If I get my ass handed to me in a game by people spawn camping with BRs and snipers, I'll get irritated, but they did a better job of controlling the map and the weapons. The starting weapon isn't supposed to be in the end-all-be-all of weapons.

I am so glad Bungie agrees that the Halo 1 pistol was a bad weapon.
I just don't get the obsession people have with the Halo 1 pistol. You don't need it now due to the BR.

the BR didn't have the range of the pistol which made it completely useless against snipers. the auto-aim was also rediculous and it didn't take much skill to use.

CE pistol > BR

So if you have a weapon that kills snipers, what's the point of having the sniper rifle in the game? Hmm?

The battle rifle was a great all-around weapon. A good starting weapon it was not.

snipers had advantage over pistols at long range. the pistol at least gave the player a chance to defend himself if he was good enough with it. the br does not.

I beg to differ.

Are you just not very good with a battle rifle? The ONLY time I have been ass raped by snipers is on Coagulation when the other team gets both rifles. If that happens, they deserve to ass rape me because me or my team gave them other rifle.

The problem with your view of Halo is you want to be able to spawn and then take out everybody no matter what weapon they have. You call that balance, which it is not. Balance is having weapons that are good in some situations and bad in others. The battle rifle is good in mid range. It shouldn't be good up close or far away. But people use button combos and unbalance it. Then, you have the sniper which should suck up close, but magnetism nulls that with random no-scopes.

There is no reason whatsoever a pistol should be able to kill somebody across a map the size of Blood Gulch/Coagulation. Plain and simple.

Ah, he's back.

In the IGN interview linked in the OP, Sketch says this with respect to your beloved pistol:

Most of the Bungie team would view the Halo 1 pistol as a broken weapon, because really it's over-powered - it's not balanced. I've had as much fun as everybody else sniping people on Blood Gulch for hours on end, but I think it was a really one-dimentional aspect of the game. It turned the game into nothing more than pistol headshots. And for that matter, we don't love it as much as we know a lot of the fans do.

There's a reason it wasn't back in Halo 2 or Halo 3. It was an overpowered POS in MP. Great in campaign, though. The BR fills in that role now.

Well, I decided to play some Halo 2 to prepare for the beta...

And I learned two things:

1. I suck now.

2. God damn... the community has really gone to hell (actually, it was probably always like this, I just forgot). What's really funny is that one guy kept using the same exact insult every time he killed me, I think it was: "You're a _____ (can't remember), you're garbage," or something along those lines. :lol

Right, but SMG start also makes the gameplay almost entirely random and the outcome is based on the proximity your team spawns to power weapons. Bungie even realizes that and that's why we're seeing the return of AR - it's a great weapon in that it gives you a chance but doesn't deliver headshots.

The thing with professional gaming leagues is that they have to eliminate the randomness and reliance on lucky spawns in order to balance the gameplay and the playing field. There's a lot of money in MLG and it just didn't make sense for them to leave the SMG as the starting weapon. When people are competing for tens of thousands of dollars, there has to be a standard. MLG achieved that.

We could debate this all day, but either way, Bungie allows you to play the game how you want to and offers a variety of Matchmaking playlists to choose from. The presence of MLG shouldn't affect anyone else's Halo experience. Nobody has to play MLG gametypes if they don't want to.

I was playing on Midship last night. This guy kills me at the beginning when I had the sword
I hit him twice but the latency was horrendous
He calls me a sword whore and picks it up. So he camps outside our base on the ledge above the path where you go underneath. He did nothing but camp and kill me when I spawned and talked shit. Finally, a couple of us ambushed him and killed them. He talked shit the entire game, was rather sad.

Like I said, the SMG is a **** up of a start. But, I don't think the BR is the answer either. Admittedly ignorant of how Halo 3 multiplayer pans out
:-(
I don't know how well the AR is. But I've heard some great things about it from people on this board.

The thing I've noticed about most MLG players is they praise the pistol and the BR because of the quick kills with headshots. You can't do that with the Assault Rifle that I know of. It just seemed that he wasn't giving the AR a decent chance before complaining about it.

I decided to play some Halo 2 to prepare for the beta too, and after three games (Ever. Total. My Live account is only a few days old.) I'm "permanently suspended" from Halo 2 matchmaking. I have no clue why, and I haven't been doing anything even remotely weird. Called the 1-800 Xbox number and the guy said it was a glitch in the system and he couldn't do anything to help me. Definitely glad I bought those maps :(

ghaleon sorry,

do you have both a crt and lcd to do a comparison for me? i just wanna know if the beta is played the same whether on lcd and crt, or if crt offers a smoother experience.

i bought an HDTV and 5.1 specifically for Halo 3, but when i used them to play Halo 2 it was a joke; i regretted buying the HDTV because my sony wega was awesome.

If you can filter through all of the MLG "competitive" banter and propaganda, there's not really much there. The carbine is better than the BR, there's less magnetism, the graphics are great, the sniper is slower, he misses his holy pistol and doesn't like the AR as a starting weapon.

I agree. The guy in the article comes off like a huge douchebag.

He might have been calling you a BK or Bad Kid. Apparantly it's the new standard in Matchmaking.

I love it when people call you a ____ whore only to immediately whore said ____ right after, gotta love that irony. :lol

On the plus side, it's nice when you get a group of people that actually say "good game" at the end of the game.

I think you can whore a weapon by camping like he was doing. If that's the case, I'll call somebody a ____ whore. I'm not going to turn down a power weapon just because I killed a guy who was using it, unless somebody on my team is better with it. But to call somebody a weapon whore, then pick that weapon up and whore it is truly ironic.

I really hope we can keep the community cool by just giving bad ratings and/or reporting stupid ****s like those once h3 ships. everyone with me?

man if you guys just agreed that BXR is acceptable then youd be good, cause BXR is a very easy counter against a sword.

but :lol who am i kidding, BXR is an exploit. an exploit god damn it.:D

I was never a fan of the BR in H2 because it was kind of a light "popping" weapon, but in H3 the sound really adds to the impact of each shot. It feels pretty powerful. You can kill in a few bursts if you use it right...seems to have fair power and moderate range. I don't know if I'd use it at close range...but to be honest, I never really understood a lot of the BR/SMG/pistol/AR conflict.

An unintended exploit to counter a sword...does one not see the problem there?

There is a counter to the sword, dodging, sticky grenades and a shotgun. Or, just stay far enough back to kill them when they can't lunge at you. I have had all of those happen to me and I have done all of them. It's the way of the game. BxRing though is unacceptable. I praise Stinkles and Bungie for removing it from H3.

Never thought anyone would take that as a bad word. Sorry dude.

My idea of a hick is the guy that is calling people the n-word, his girlfriend a hoe or skank and continually having to make us wait while he grabs another beer. Or yells at his kid to get "daddy" a beer. It was even better cause the other guy we were playing with was obviously in the same house as this guy and was repeating half of what the guy said.

I'm not sure what "hick" means to you though.

You didn't like the BR? I thought that was one of the best guns in the game. It made a good pair with a sniper or a shotgun.

Anyways, all the guns in Halo 3 sound spectacular so far. I'm impressed.

Well, I dunno. I'm not really good at it (maybe this is why!), so I kind of picked a weapon based on feel and sound. The SMG was particularly unlikable to me because of this...it sounded a bit like a popcap gun. I really thought the AR in H1 looked, felt, and sounded more solid.

I wasn't crazy about the firing style of it either in the second game. Dunno.

I like it now. :)

For sure. I'll do my best to not use it. Talking about this really shows how different certain areas take certain words. I'm in Calgary and honestly have never heard anyone take offense to that at all.

But anyways..... Halo3 is fun times. :)

Just saw this and the helmet looks pretty cool (not cheap looking or toy-like).

Yeah, when I saw it in the Gamehead episode I thought it looked great too. I love me some metal cases though, so I'll be happy with the CE.

Just finished a 5 hour marathon of Halo 3 goodness with a room full of friends passing the controller around (so when you peep my stats, it wasn't all me) and damn, even after all the videos I've watched (every single one of them on the web) - playing the actual game was STILL unbelievably so much better!

Again, kudos to these guys at Bungie - the gameplay is downright rocksolid... they really have surpassed themselves, and gone above and beyond Halo and Halo 2, and most of you all already know that I rank those two as my favourite shooters of all time... I've played so many other franchises out there in different genres where the original game still managed to be better than the sequel, and that was never the case with Halo to me - Halo 2 improved over Halo, and Halo 3 Beta has gone beyond Halo 2... wow.

Assault Rifle is such a blast to use, and is really worth holding onto even as a starting weapon... not to mention how great it is to see this cool-looking weapon back in action again!

I really love the Spartan Laser, man - I barely got my hands on it because I never knew where it spawned, but once I found it on Snowbound, I loved it... so cool, so powerful, pure obliteration when it hits!

And just to end my short impressions - I really couldn't tell if there was any auto-aim whatsoever, since it's much harder to snipe now, or even get headshots with the BR - very nice...

Gonna head back in for some Halo 3 goodness now that my friends are gone - and oh yeah, maybe sometime tonight or tomorrow, I'm gonna make some room on my friends list for you guys - we need to get some parties going!

Thanks again Stinkles and Bungie!

EDIT: Yeah Sean, the helmet really looks high-grade, definitely not cheap looking at all... so sweet, and will be mine at launch no doubt!

I just can't wait to see the feel of the game. halo 2 is great and all. yet for some reason i crack open halo 1 and it is still fun. just enjoy it more than to. especially playing with the AR in one. i love that thing. can't wait till wensday. any impressions on if it is more like 1 or 2?

by the way i love gametrailers.com they have a clip up (first vid on the site) a gameplay real put up by bungie that is great. the part were the blue spartan is using the turret gun and gets blown up. his animation while turning the gun. is great. so good.

Two more GameTrailers videos were just recently put up.

Film Sharing:

Since it's not in HD kind of hard to read the text, but the user interface looks very slick and more importantly fast and responsive. Two more things pop up in the persons gamer profile - Halo 3 Service Record and Halo 3 File Share. Downloading and uploading happens in seconds at least in this video, and you can also keep playing while downloading or uploading a film.

Bungie Gameplay Reel:

This video shows some cool uses of the new shield doors and shield bubble, and it shows how the oddball now kills in one melee hit no matter what.
