The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Well, I've officially started running into droppers (and possibly standby-ers) today. Did a Team Slayer match on Vahalla, and a couple of minutes into it, Halo 3's version of the "blue connecting" screen popped up (you see everyone's score, just like hitting the back button, plus a message to the side saying "Please Wait"), and after a long wait, we were finally dumped back into the game. 2 people dropped from the opposing team (I'm assuming the host and someone else dropped), and someone dropped my my team. Another TS match later after that, we had someone drop off our team, leaving us w/ 3 people against 4 much better players. We got stomped, to say the least. There were 800 some odd people playing in Team Slayer at that point, and two games in a row, I run into droppers.

Btw, I can see what EGM and some others have been saying as far as grenades seeming nerfed. There are times you'd think that someone with a shield at less than half strength could be finished off by a VERY close grenade (esp. frag), but they never seem to be. I'm very much a vengeful death kinda player, if I'm going down, I start dropping every grenade I've got. I've seen people stand virtually right on top of grenades as they go off and don't die. Just like Halo 2. Drives me nuts.

So, for the other lucky bastards also in the beta, anyone making good use of the missile launcher? I've only had luck with it in tight quarters (like defending the flag capture point at the other base), myself.

also how are throwing gernades into the lifts? do they just bounce up or will they go forward a little onto the higher ground?

I'm pretty sure the lift affects everything. One time i put the lift by a weapon and the weapon shot right up to the enemy.

possibly just bad hosts.

doesnt bungie have some new code to counter standby in Halo 2, or is that just for bridging?

whats the consensus on the AR, good, bad, ugly?

REALLY good, if someone doesn't have good aim, you can actually escape death or kill them with better aim, nothing like the SMGs endless clip where you had to be a complete tard to not kill someone who you got the jump on.

In Halo 2? You can still force host (much harder now though), and you can still stand-by, but I have yet to see a modder since the patch.

So, when someone is quiting you still get the blue screen of boredom?

Not really the same screen. You at least see the score, who's still in the game, plus a "Please wait" message to the side. So you can at least ruminate over how much you're rocking or sucking whilst waiting for the problem to be corrected.

So if my teamate is high up on a ledge, i could throw out a lift..than throw the flag/bomb up to him on the lift?

Has anyone tried this? Good question.

Can you lift the flag?

I wish Wed. would roll around though, MM takes quite a while with such a small pool of players, not to mention I keep running into the same opponents :P

QFT. That's been another annoying thing; seeing the lobby fill up with players, looks like a game is about to setup, then suddenly, no more players and MM starts looking from scratch again. There are times that the length of time it takes MM to find a suitable match and get you into the game is around 5~8 minutes (at least for me, personally). There was a similar problem when Halo 2 first launched. I'm sure part of it is just trying to make matches up out of so few people.

All my bitching aside, the game is a blast to play, and a huge improvement over Halo 2's multiplayer.

That doesn't sound that annoying, because man did I hate the blank blue screen.

has anyone with the beta taken time to see how the AR's compass works?

I know that in Halo 1 the compass always pointed to the nearest planetary body, is that still true in Halo 3?

I have noticed the compass on the AR moving, but I haven't really paid attention to see if it was pointing towards a player though.

i am confused why are people who have the beta posting? i know i would be playing it all day. haha

Well, my PC is literally right next to my 360 :P

Really good. Not over-powered, but if you're good at aiming you have a chance in any situation. I've killed a lot of people with the AR. In H2, you never feel safe running around with just an SMG. Bungie got it right with the starting weapon this time.

Anyone else havin trouble with the zoom function on the right stick popping up while playing? I'll start shooting and barely have any pressure on it and Ill zoom in by accident, never had this happen on Halo 2. It's mainly just with the AR though...

I haven't had that happen. Maybe you just need to calm down.

Strangely, no. I say strangely, because I had that problem horribly in Halo 2 on the Xbox (still do when playing at work. During Lunch! Honest! Just our lunch hour!). Trying to nail people in a Rockets only match and it seemed like every time I fired a rocket, I zoomed in. Hasn't happened once to me in Halo 3.

Btw, I LOVE starting with the AR. Much better than everyone starting with the BR, a billion times better than starting with a single SMG, and no worrying about being nailed by a pistol from across the map. I find myself using it to finish people off in short situations when my teammates have gotten the enemy's shields down. Works well with grenades and melees too.

Edit: oops read it wrong.

No idea if this has been asked or not, but do rockets have lock on or are they back to Halo: CE style? And I'm guessing there's no banshee in Valhalla?

Rockets don't but the missile pod does.

Maybe my controller is screwed up, it is pretty old now :P

And I haven't seen a Banshee, I'd really like to know what Shoe was talking about when he mentioned it havin a new attack, maybe he meant the ghost, but I've drove it twice and can't see anything different about it.

I haven't seen a banshee in Valhalla, though in the Multiplayer ViDoc there is a banshee on the base.

Please keep that shit outta here. Advocating that people violate their Live terms of service in every way imaginable to play the Beta two extra days is stupid.
Psh, it's just xbox live. Not like its something important.

What the hell is Dark Angel talking about?

There's an extremely shady workaround to get in the beta if you have a friend in currently that you can trust. I can only imagine it's easily tracked and those people who do it are going to be in for an unpleasant surprise when they get banned.
