The Halo 3 Beta Thread

It was lame in Halo 2 as well.

It may be lame that you have to move your thumb off the stick for a split second, but that split second could communicate something to your team etiher A) saves your ass or B) wins the game...

It's not much of a sacrifice to move your thumb for a hair of a second to tap it... good thing Halo isn't on the Wii, way to much movement.

Wait hold on a sec. You have to touch the dpad to talk? I've been playing games and I've been talking without touching anything?

You have to touch the dpad for your whole team to hear you. Otherwise when you talk, only the people close by will hear you.

Because a lot of you people are ungodly annoying and if I had to listen to someone who said EVERYTHING over team chat, you'd be on mute before the first kill even happened.

Listen kids.. you're already taking your thumb off a stick to go for the melee, unless you're weird and use green thumb.. and in that case you're still taking it off to zoom.

Taking your thumb off the stick for a split second to team chat is no different.

To the annoying part, thats why they have the new mute features. Secondly as someone said already, we dont have to stop moving to melee. The dpad being on the left side makes it so you have to stop moving. See?

alkaline black said:
Uhm.. I don't have to stop moving to voice chat. What's your problem?

I'm not as good at Halo, I guess. But yeah, let Bungie keep in features that are artificial hatecockblocks for noobs rather than letting skill and skill alone determine someone's worth.

That's great that's it's not hard for you (despite saying earlier that it was a pain in the ass), but how does that invalidate my point of enabling persistent team chat for those that want it? And the point of the beta, beyond squashing bugs, is to recommend ways to make the finished product more enjoyable. I would enjoy myself more if I had the option.
Communication needs to be unified in some kind of format. There are different ways to broadcast it which is fine. But you can't have people choosing to have an open channel all the time and some only have a cued channel. It doesn't work.

And I said it was a pain in the ass compared to just pressing the shoulder button. Deploying equipment is a pain in my ass too until I get used to pressing the shoulder buttons to reload.

not sure if it's been mentioned, but what is the deal with the interminable flashing 'Retrieving files from Xbox Live...'?? been trying to get a game going (that is, been trying to get the 'START MATCHMAKING' button to light up) for close on forty minutes now with no luck.

Someone else is having the same problem a page back with no resolution. Did you try the memory tab button combo? Or restarting?

So...is it worth going out and getting my Gold subscription and Crackdown copy?

Yes both because the beta is good and Crackdown is good.

Have you ever played a team-based multiplayer game over Xbox Live that wasn't Halo 2 or 3? They tend to have this nice feature where if you talk (EVEN WITHOUT PRESSING A BUTTON BEFOREHAND,) your entire team can hear you, regardless of where you are on the map!

How about turning the option to always team talk on or off? Yes there are buttheads that will annoy you but nothing is gonna stop them from hitting the d-pad over and over to talk to everyone anyways. There is NO reason to not have it as an option.

For proximity talk, does that include teammates or opponents or both?

I've been in matchmaking for team slayer waiting for a game to work for 20 minutes.... it seems like I almost get in a game, then I go back to searching again. Anyone else have this problem?

Those games don't rely on strategy like Halo IMO

Did the Beta just crash?

Some of these rumble modes seem a little silly. Oddball and King of the Hill in particular. It's hard to defend a point on your own, and I was playing oddball in High Ground, and the ball got down to the beach. Kinda hard to survive out there for any meaningful amount of time.

Who on the GAF list prefers the rumble stuff to the team stuff? Hopefully there is at least a couple of you out there to play with.

I don't know why there is an argument here. It is easier just to talk rather than tapping a button to talk.

It's not strategic the way it is, it's needless. Also this talk about proximity chat is ridiculous. It certainly isn't realistic. If someone is close enough to hear you, he/she is close enough to hear you regardless of a button being pushed or not.

Yeah, can't seem to get in any matches, it hangs forever on the receiving files from xbox live in the lobby, me and a bunch of friends tried in different configurations and none of us could get Start Matchmaking or whatever to light up.

giga said:
Is there a way to set it to team only?

There's no reason for me to talk to the opposing team.
If the other team is close enough to hear you if you were to use prox-chat, they'll still hear you if you use team-chat.

i'd hate to see you guys play a number of pc games where you actually have to HOLD DOWN a button to chat.

grumpy grumpy.

halo hasn't exactly ever been a game that requires team strategy. at all.

Well there you have it, it isn't an option to make communication easier for everyone because you would have to mute a few players.

How in the hell is pressing a button to talk MORE strategic then not? I can't comprehend the logic.

Voice your concerns here like you are doing. It's a beta, so they want to know what ppl think.

(i think it's stupid too, i want to talk to the whole team like in gears)

Only an hour and a half left in Driver's Ed., then I can go home and play some Halo 3 with you guys.

This class is so boring, it is causing my eyes to bleed.

I'd hate to play a game that poorly designed.

Nobody can because there is no logic behind it. He simply likes the way it is. He might as well just say that instead of coming up with this "strategy" reasoning.

Anyways since he thinks it justs a few people maybe he should gander over to the bungie forums http://www.bungie.net/Search/default.aspx?q=team+chat&g=0

Well that's why Bungie implemented the push to talk, that way there's a little more tactical gameplay than otherwise, IMO.

Yep... and in that case I have to listen to the babble the entire game, or if they die I hear them swearing as they die. Nobody in Halo 2 or 3, right before they die presses the team chat deal to go "Oh ****!"... The voice proximity thing is nice to, which is a feature you cant use if its open mic like other games. Everything you have to say doesnt need to be blasted over to your team.

uhhhh yes it does. Command & Conquer 3 does exactly that and it works perfectly.

It's amazing how far voice chat has come, people can push to talk and talk continuously in the same channel, what'll they think up next?

Halo isn't a good tactics game dude.. games like pdz and wolfenstien are far superior for tactics play and they both use open team chat.

I mean strat in halo is about as basic as it can get all things considered, and that's fine, I don't expect command and conquer out of my halo, but id like at least the option to keep my team chat channel open until I dont want it open anymore.. the noise that goes through the headset is also weird in that it sometimes just goes on and off the second you enable it OR it makes a loud screech and doesnt work at all.

I hear Halo 3 has an easy-to-use mute feature for that very reason. I suggest muting a player as you're waiting to respawn! That way, you won't have to stop moving to do it!

That's not true man. It works great in R6:V, for example. Now I don't expect the Halo community to be 1/10th as good from a teamwork/civility perspective, but it can work.

I'd rather hear someone swear when they die. It's the same thing that happens when I play with people right next to me -- why not make the game feel more social?

Thanks. It had to be asked at some point, hehe.

... How about the case where your teammate is dieing and tries to tell you something helpful right before he dies? As you just illustrated, they wont be able to. I can't just say like in Gears they are at Boomer. Wouldn't it be nice to know that the guy on your team that just died saw the bomb guy coming in the back way where nobody is protecting?

I'm another one that has always hated having to press a button to chat with all team members, it is quite simply unneeded. It would be the same as including a button to take the safety off your weapons so you can fire.

I lived with it in Halo 2 and I will no doubt live with it in Halo 3 despite it being even more unwieldy and it using a less reliable button (my Dpad often never registered an input before I sanded the rim down), but it really doesn't make any sense and it never has gameplay wise.

Despite that I am enjoying the beta immensely, and without the huge assistance with aiming I have strangely become a lot better with the sniper rifle where some of my friends have become a lot worse :lol

wait people are complaining about this? that's a ****ing awesome way to communicate with your team, it's realistic.

To support your argument, you're quoting the Bungie.net forums? Wow...that's like using Kotaku as a source to promote a rumor.

Wtf is the secret to halo? I had this same problem in Halo 2. I can stand there right with my crosshairs on someone and empty clip after clip into them, even using bursts doesn't help. They rarely ever die. Most of the time they'll just turn around, stare at me like I got off the handicap buss and bitch slap me to death =[
