The Halo 3 Beta Thread

I'm a bit late to the party, but I just got done playing the Beta for the first time, and I had an absolute blast with it.

Environments looked great, weapons are more balanced than previous games, the AR kicks ass, it's all good. :)

It felt so damn good killing someone with the Spartan laser for the first time also. :D

SPARTAN LASER CRITICISM

While the Spartan Laser is nice, I think the victim really needs to be brutalized when hit with it. I mean it sounds like pure fury, it kills with pure fury, but the body doesn't react as if being hit by pure fury. The victim should be flung back at least three times as much as it is now. Make people FEAR THE FURY.

I kinda like the crumple of indignation it's sporting now. Also I had one kill that launched the corpse sky high, not really sure how that happened.

Except there's nothing random about the Spartan Laser. :p

Try me and I'll show you how "random" the Lancer is. :D

DJ makes a valid suggestion about the laser. Hell, sometimes melee attacks send you flying across the map, but an uber-powerful laser cannon can't?

I'll also throw this out there: "shotty snipers" is the worst spin on deathmatch I've ever seen. At least with other spins like "all rockets," you'll actually be having fun.

Why is everyone complaining about this mode? Sniping is so awesome and fulfilling, not to mention the shotgun actually works in Halo 3...

I think Valhalla is to blame. Shotty Snipers is pretty damn fun on uh... that one map! Christ, why can't I remember the name. Anyway, it's fun. It's just that Valhalla sucks all the enjoyment out of anything. Bring on BTB and maybe there'll be a reason not to veto that shit.

Yeah, they gotta have something crazy about it. Maybe if it lightsabered you? Burned a hole right through you?

I can't believe some of the poor taste in gametypes around here. VIP in Snowbound is intense. My favored strategy for taking out VIPs is working with another player to distract the VIP in combat. Then when they take the bait you club them on the back of the head like a baby seal. It is a violent game.

Similarly maligned here and in matchmaking is Territories, especially on Valhalla. I love the extra focus on strategy in determining how to split up your forces to take certain points. Heck stealth is a reasonable tactic; sometimes you can get a big jump on a territory before they are aware of your presence. Unlike in flag games, you don't have the game telling everyone you are at the objective. Playing it on Valhalla is cool because you have so many options to proceed with... lots of different equipment is available, many vehicles are around, tons of different weapons... and both sides are on relatively equal footing unlike High Ground which gives the game a different feel.

I haven't had an opportunity to play VIP on Valhalla or Territories on Snowbound (or Land Grab for that matter) so I will grant that they may suck massive amounts of a sexual object of your choice. That said, the gametypes themselves are sound and they do work on at least a couple of the maps in the beta.

I'll try and do you a favor tonight. There was a match where I lasered two guys in a row, both of which flew about 20 feet in the air, if not more.

Both of them in the ass. LAWLZ!

So true...

And Territories is awesome, Land Grab on the other hand...:(

any west coast beta players here?

playing team matches with pickup groups = repeated devastating humiliation.

You can add me (I live on the west coast): CreepingDeath54

Agreed about the Snowbound VIP and Territories on Valhalla, the map doesn't seem too big in territories for 4v4 to me, and the combat is usually pretty focused. So far I actually don't think I've encountered any gametypes that I flat out hate, and I enjoy playing on pretty much every map.

Edit: Should add, I've never played land grab yet.

I really hate Territories.

Its 100% because you can't get them back, though. And how long it takes to get them at all. I think on a small map, 10 territories with 5 second caputre/retake would be madness with 16 players. But it'd be a fun kind of madness.

Actually that's a very good point. The thing practically vaporizes warthogs, so the bodies should be flung across the map.

That would make it even better.

I finally got to play the snow level. I discovered the hard way who the Guardians were by trying to explore the map and got shot to death. The sound from bullets hitting the purple metal sounds badass.

Is there a fix for the Game Over thing yet?

I did maintenance on the Hard Drive
I tried the Up+A thing to clear Halo 3 cache
didn't work..

I now redownloaded the whole Beta and will try again tonight.. This is so sad :(

You know what I'd love to see them add?

Battle damage decals.

When your shield is totally gone, hits should mark up your armor. It'd be awesome to see grizzled spartans running around, and to see the death shots actually show on their bodies.

Beta is awesome.

I admit I'm not really a fan of team modes, but I did play some Territories on Valhalla with a buddy of mine and it was alright. Granted we were winning. My buddy and I went on a tear with the Warthog, I liked actually having a reason to motor around in the Mongoose.

why yes, I do believe I develop some anger issues with the spartan lazer.

it's based on true events.

stupid glowing red beam of death.

What the ****. The new King of the Hill ****ing sucks.

When you are inside the hill you can't see shit. The one in Halo 2 was perfect... If you want to make it easier for people to spot the hill, have two views. One from the outside (bright etc) and one when you're inside the hill (transparent so you can actually see the damn enemies shooting you).

territories = awesome. land grab = the suckage.

great games again gaffers/oa'ers. hg, hitlerstolemypotato, rooter etc

Visibility is bad enough that on one match we put the jump pad in the middle of the hill so we could launch above the hill effect to see where everyone was coming from.

It worked. We held the hill at that spot the entire period without relinquishing the hill.

Spartan Laser should be more like this (Taken from the leak thread, thanks op_ivy)

Really? Did you have a good team? With a good team, this mode is godly. We didn't let the other team capture a single node when I played though, so I might be biased.

Yeah that's REALLY confusing. they have to go back to the halo 2 system in terms of skirmish hud indicators. Plus they need the whole Gained the Lead, Lost the Lead and Tied the Leader audibles. I'm not sure who thought it was a good idea to remove them, but it's good for sense of urgency.

the icons should always match your team (or the enemy team if its pointing out an enemy). plain and simple.

i'm sure those voice additions will without question be in the final game

Hahahaha. The first time I got in it I thought that I was in something like the bubble shield. Then about five grenades landed at my feet and ended that idea.

I can't decide if the needler is broken or not.

I swear I get hit with 2 effing pink crystals and thats a wrap for me...

The needler is amazing, one of the most brilliantly balanced weapons imo. If you catch someone off guard, standing still, or not strafing, then that pretty much means insta-death. But if the person can react fast enough then it isn't too hard to dodge the needles. One of my favorite weapons, and I usually pick it up when I see it.

There are certain hills that are impossible to see out of, particularly the underground ones on HG and SB. I like the new hill though, I hated how Halo 2's hill was about 2 feet wide and all it took was a grenade or two to kill anyone in it, such an awful mode I thought.

You have not played king of the hill on High Ground then. The hills in the underground bunker are impossible to see out of.

It's not a problem in Valhalla or the sunny parts of High Ground, but everywhere else it sucks.

I <3 <3 the Power Drainer. Scored two kills on the VIP on Snowbound just now. They feel so safe...and then *oops* shields gone! Where's yer god now? *whack*

Great ****ing piece of equipment. :D

I think it had to do with resetting the 360's cache. Then Crackdown will prompt you with an update next time you run it. Don't remember what you have to press to reset the cache though.

The beta is pretty fun! I saw three enemies crowding around inside a bubble shield thinking they were same from me but I walked in, chucked a grenade, and bam triple kill just like that.

Great ****ing piece of equipment. :D

I love when defenders on 1 Flag CTF High Ground neglect their poor Power Drainer then huddle up inside the flag room. One jumping Power Drainer toss later you have their flag and their dignity.

Three questions:

1) is there any way to change game settings? I've been playing nothing but Slayer in just two maps and it's getting a bit old already. (no, not really. :D but CTF would be nice)
2) can I customize my icon/Spartan? I've seen guys rocking silver armor...
3) why isn't this stickied?

Also: add me to your Friends list: "Deo Diabolikal"

1. you mean team slayer right? (just making sure you're not on rumble pit ;) )
2. press start to go to profile, then press right to go to settings tab (yeah, I somehow didn't see that option too) and change your appearance.
3. being stickied is overrated.

I loooove the new spin on Territories.

There's a lot more strategy there, and a lot of "viable" ways to succeed when you're on offense. Everyone attack one territory. Split into teams. Have one guy hop around and act like a diversion, while the others nab a territory.

Also, you DO realize that when a territory is captured you begin spawning in that forward position, right? My team learned this one the hard way. We were kicking ass, but then the enemy somehow manage to nab Territory 4 (deep in our territory). Since they spawned right there it wreaked havoc on the rest of our defensive plans.

It's insane how much tiny, not-often-used items like the power drainer and mine can make things so much more insane. The mongoose and items are incredible additions. The mancannons are insane fun as well.

Went from private to sergeant in pretty much one day...

My k/d ratio was HORRIBLE because I kept sacrificing myself for the objectives in skirmish. A half dozen slayer matches later and I'm almost back to a healthy ratio. :lol

HOORAH!

A few things: got a glitch today where it killed my teammates and accused me of it even though I was all the way across the map (highground) and there was no weapon I could have done it with since it was shotty/snipers.

Also, I shot a guy with the AR in the feet and he went flying straight up in the air like 30 ft. :lol

I loooove the new spin on Territories.
Valhalla territories usually get 8 vetoes immediately. :lol

People never cease to amaze me, just played a game of team slayer, our 3rd teammate had like 3 kills all game, neither of us say a single word about his performance. Then at the end he has 5 and he's like "So do you morons know anything about team work or are you just going to be stupid and not talk", to which we both replied with don't blame us (20 kills and 15 respectively) for your piss poor performance. Love the Halo community...
