The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Well, I guess halo3 beta destroyed my xbox360.
2 nights ago I logged on and tried to play halo3 beta, and it froze while trying to join a game.

so I just turned it off and and went to sleep.

then today, on my day off I turn on my xbox360 and when it trys to log into the gamer profile in Crackdown and it ****in freezes forever....so I eventually turn off my xbox360 then I try to turn it back on and I keep getting the stupid 3 red flashing lights.

It was just wear and tear on your 360. It's not the game. Eventually, they'll eventually all crapout. But I'm still hanging onto mine

wear and tear? I barely played the thing cause I work 50-60 hours a week, and have a decent social life. No it wasn't wear and tear....its the 360 is a pos.

so what's the situation with the #ranking and the logo ranking.

are they connected?

i notice people with lower #'s having a larger logo rank (forget the names of the ranking)
and vice versa.

I guess I will ask again.

Is anyone playing the beta on a SDTV? If so, mind giving some impressions?

on my sdtv it looked like halo2.5 but i didnt care cause gameplay was fun and I figure it will look better on actual release.

I'm playing on a TV that would make videophiles cry tears of grief and pain.

It looks excellent. My only issue is the HUD, which is difficult to see on some parts of Snowbound. No issues with text, targeting ability or anything else. Textures are superb.

I'm playing on a 17 year-old 27" set with color problems, and never in my most blurry-eyed stupor of exhaustion would I call what I see Halo 2.5. 0_o

Wrap it in a towel.

Favorite saved film so far: team slayer, we take a huge lead so we dick around on high ground. I jump in the back of a friends atv and we go explore the base in it. I grab the spartan laser and as we go over the overpass we see two coming at us. I charge the laser, we both fall backwards while still on the atv and I manage to hit both of them as they're coming down at us. Later on we still have the same setup, me on the back with the laser and they come at us with their own atv. We chase them down to the beach and they hit a wall, as we're taking a hard right the laser goes off for ANOTHER double kill with the laser...while still on the back of the atv. Dunno if it was the same match, I've not watched it again in full but I also sniped someone from the back of the atv...headshot. Riding brokeback ftw!

Thanks for the quick replies guys!

How the HUD translated to non-widescreen was the one thing that concerned me, but it is good to hear that it isn't a major problem. I do like nice graphics, but Halo's gameplay will more than make up for having to play on a SDTV.

Good point about the HUD. I also think it is too light.

Oh, and your last sentence is gold.

Turn it on and wrap it in a bath towel. Let it sit for about twenty minutes. It will heat up. Power it down and remove the towel. Power it back up. You may now have a working 360 again. Just don't let MS know you did it and it can't hurt.

I'm slowly climbing up to 2.0 K/D! That's my objective before this Beta is over.

Tomorrow, May 23rd, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. PST, we are flipping a switch (temporarily) that probably won’t affect you one iota. But if it does, this is what will happen:

Should your game encounter a rare crash, your Xbox 360 will give you an alert screen, explaining that it’s uploading data to Bungie servers. We actually need this data, and we need your cooperation too. Although you probably won’t see that screen, if you do, let it finish uploading the data. It may take some time – upwards of 10-20 seconds and perhaps longer. So we beg your patience. When the process has completed correctly this is the message you'll see, "File upload complete. Visit http://www.bungie.net/forums/halo3beta for more information (safe to reboot)."

After 1 p.m., we’ll flip it back to normal, and if you do crash after that time, the data upload process will be much shorter. Helping us collect valuable crash data like this is one of the ways you can help us make Halo 3 a better game. And of course, we’re only collecting data on “natural” crashes, so please don’t try to make your 360 crash.

Sounds like they're doing some data collection on the crash bugs people have reported.

Earlier in this thread, I recall someone mentioning elements of the HUD being cut off on their display. I noticed the same thing on my TV, (not sure if it matters, but it's a 52'' Hitachi projection HDTV). It wasn't bad enough to impede my play, so I didn't think much of it; now I'm playing on the 32'' Philips HDTV set upstairs and am noticing the same issue. Again, not so bad that it's unplayable, but it happening on two different set is, well, strange.

Here's a quick mock-up of what I'm seeing:

1179042032nl5.jpg

Everything to the outside of the vertical white bars is what's being cut off, but the aspect ratio looks entirely correct. It's hard knowing how many frag grenades I have left (lucky there's only 2 to worry about), and I can't tell I'm out until the icon is no longer highlighted. The primary weapon's ammo is cut off, but there's a numerical readout of the rounds available so it's not too bad. Obviously some of the team scores are lost, too.

Both sets are native 1080i, so that's what I have the 360 Dash set to. Sometimes I'll notice some minor cut-off in other games, but it's never as noticeable as it's been in H3.

I don't recall who first brought this up, but is anyone else experiencing this?

I spent a few days correcting the overscan on my Sony HD CRT when GRAW came out. I had to go into my TVs service menu and change a bunch of settings until I got my overscan down to 2% from 7.5%. If you don't have a guide, you can really screw up your TV though.

Yeah that is some pretty bad overscan. I also game on a HD CRT and I had some overscan issues as well. A trip to the service menu* fixed that real quick.

*Be careful if you don't know what you're doing you can permanently **** up your TV.

i'm using a crt and have that problem...anyway to fix it?
there are ways of adjusting overscan in the service menu but i wouldn't go in there unless you knew exactly what you are doing.

service menus can be pretty scary.

i had my tv calibrated by an ISF technician. he took care of all my overscan problems. I have none with games anymore. what tvs do you guys have? you can probably find out how to get into the SM on the net somewhere.

Thanks for the info, JB and Crisco.

I was afraid a fix would involve a trip to the service menu-- those things are scary as hell and I'm in no way cut out to deal with them. I have two uncles who are extremely knowledgeable when it comes to things like this so I'll have 'em take a look. If not, there's always the local ISF guy. Thanks again!

I would not have touched a thing in the service menu if I would not have found a complete guide that told me what everything does. As soon as you change one thing in there, something else can get messed up so it's a lot of back and forth trial and error. You can get lost in the service menu for hours and it's terrifying.

Just hit Major. Bungie.net says I've played 249 games but according to my in-game stats I've played 245 with 200 RP.

That a .816 RP percentage.

Hoping to hit Commander tomorrow or so.

Random ideas that'll get lost in this ginormous thread:
1- with the rumour of 4 player co-op campaign, have the ability to play as soldiers. I'd play the David Cross guy the whole time.
2- have the ability to record your own dialogue for the game.
3- retarded multiplayer idea: Team Volleyball. A giant glowing orb ball is shot at and turns colors depending on who's hitting it. Different powered guns score different points and the whole while the ball is bouncing around the level.

I couldn't find this thread for ages, then - hurrah! It's been stickied!

And it only had to reach several thousand posts more than NeoGAFs largest thread evar!1! to do it.

Housemate just lent me his crackdown game so i'll give the halo 3 beta a spin tonight, tomorrow onwards though I have too much uni work to finish :(

This thread is getting to be so big, I think we need to expand. We'll all be celebs, we'll sell T-shirts and wristbands, we'll create a podcast, we get a TV Show, etc. It'll be great.

I think the militaries of Earth have been all combined into one unit. In the books, he was technically in the Navy. Master Chief is a Navy rank. But he fought alongside Marines. I think they're all together that way there's no confusion as to who's the C.O. in combat situations.

What is everyone's favorite grenades? Plasma no longer. It's hard to choose between frag and spike. I get so many death from the grave from frags, and they are great to bounce off walls where you think enemies are. I might have to go with spikes, when you stick someone it is the best feeling.

Spike and Plasma for me. Frag grenades are great and very useful, but nothing beats sticking a grenade to a guy.

Still frag. It's great in every situation. I usually use it first when I engage someone then use my gun. I haven't had much luck with the plasma grenade. The Brute Grenade is kinda useless to me cuz I can't stick and it's basically useless if it explodes on the ground.

Please Bungie increase the FOV. I don't mind taking a performance hit for more FOV. At least make it an option.

I never saw the big thing about FOV. I don't really pay that much attention to it myself.

These pictures from HDTV forum are a great example of why people make a big deal out of it.

Like I said, it doesn't bother me either way.

Well that's why I said make it an option. I know some people just don't understand why it's so important. :)

Halo 2's FOV was in no where near the norm for FPS, it was most likely done to stop major frame drops in firefights. However, I don't understand how the 360 could have any problem with giving Bungie the option to add a bigger FOV in H3.

Didn't they increase the FOV from Halo 2 to Halo 3 (Beta)? I thought 72 degrees was wider than Halo 2's for some reason.

Yeah, they increased it by 12 degrees over Halo 2 (60 degrees FOV). :P I also notice people are more prone to motion sickness when the FOV is so restricted.

Edit: I'd be Happy with even 82 to be honest. I read that they are debating just how much to keep the FOV, so getting some feedback from people could be helpful.
