The Halo 3 Beta Thread

It's to 50, the game lasts pretty long, unless you're playing someone who is awesome at Ball. Like me.

Last game of Team Oddball I played (which goes to 100) lasted 160 seconds. Less than three minutes total. Last game of straight Oddball lasted 119 seconds. Less than two minutes.

Just did the Towel Trick™ on my 360 and it's working again.

Still sucks I'll have to replace it later..

Hope you can get it working long term. Sometimes it only works once each time you give it the sauna.

What Oddball are you playing? My Oddball games in Rumble have both been to 50.

my K/D ratio was never good in halo 2, but I probably had the most assists because all I did was drive the hog while my buddy gaussed. raked up so many killtaculars, they were as common as double kills.

Is anyone else mysteriously getting one shotted in melee range? I mean sitting at 80-100% shield and just collapsing in a single melee hit. It's happened to me too many times to just be me not noticing getting hit by a grenade at the same time.

Anyone notice how players make a beeline for the shotgun on Snowbound? People can be camping bitches by just waiting for you to walk through a shield door before blasting you in the face at point-blank.

WRONG.

Further updates to follow.

If I wanted to play an objective game I'd play Team Skirmish/BTB. If I'm playing by myself and want to kill people I don't want to play oddball or something. Most of the time whenever oddball or hill games come up for me in Rumble Pit they almost always get vetoed by everyone, so it doesn't seem to be just me. Make a seperate playlist for that if some people want it.

I'm one of those people.

That's why you have 3 different types of grenades on you...

If I got a shotty or any weapon for that matter and I see a dot coming towards me I immediately crouch(crouch toggle ftw) and get the surprise on my opponent. At least that's what you should do and the reason crouch is there in the first place(to make you invisible on radar).

Especially in Rumble Pit. I'm not there to be anybodys friend...

No, if you wanted to play a TEAM objective game you'd play Team Skirmish/BTB.
I guess it would be nice to have a Rumble Slayer and a Rumble Skirmish playlist, but the Rumble objective games are still awesome.

Bungie still needs to tone down the melee range in Halo3. It's not as bad as Halo2, but it's still a bit ridiculous. I've been dead a few times and while waiting to respawn I've seen, on quite a few occasions, people fighting and then all of a sudden one lunges from a nice distance for a melee kill.

Nah, I disagree. And whenever I'm in an objective based Rumble game, it seems everyone else really sucks at it and gets frustrated.

When I'm meleeing, I feel the range is perfectly fine. I don't see myself lunging forward when I'm more than a couple feet away, I just miss.

What you may be seeing is lag, where the game knows a guy just got meleed, but on your screen they're too far apart, so it moves them closer together so the meleer isn't just hitting air, from your perspective

...

Or maybe there is a big lunge and I suck at it

I don't agree about Melees, I've swung at air so many times when it would have been a lunge in Halo 2 :lol You need a little bit of lunge for it too work well, IMO.

I use melee a LOT for my kills (such as in this game) and I too swipe wind a good percentage of the time. Different weapons seem to have different melee ranges as well. It seems like the Spiker Rifle has a more powerful melee - thanks to that blade - but the range is shorter than the AR. At least, that's what it feels like. I tend to miss a lot of melees with that weapon.

Also, Bungie is taking questions about the Beta in this bungie.net thread:

Gamers are getting better and better at firing, then immediately meleeing for the kill. It seems like one action, but they're doing both.

That could be it.

A person tried waiting for me yesterday, but I notified someone and they snuck in behind them and assassinated them.

The one thing I keep hearing is that people want cumulative medal tracking. Bungie has to hear this. I rarely get killing frenzys and shotgun sprees so I'd like to be able to keep track of them.

Over 100 games played now and some of the gametypes are getting on my nerves. Land Grab on any map I really don't like, although the BTB playlist finally gave me an appreciation for Valhalla. Assault and multi-flag is great fun on that map. High Ground Territories has to be my favorite though.

Also, is anyone having problems getting into ranked team matches with a party? It will go to "Players Found" but then it disappears and starts looking for another game. It keeps doing this over and over.

Here are the rank sorting, near as I can tell. This took quite a while to sort out, so be grateful :)

To become an OFFICER (basically any of the silver ranks - anything at Lieutenant and higher), you need to achieve the set amount of RP, *and* achieve a specific rank in any matchmaking gametype.

Ranks:

Recruit - 1 RP

Apprentice - 3 RP

Just an update on these, I've seen my first Colonel (Three silver stars) in the wild:

Actually, here's an accurate (albeit somewhat confusing, at first glance) explanation of the ranking system:

http://samcooler.com/ranks/index.htm

Basically, once you start getting into the silver (officer) ranks, there's a couple ways you can be promoted. If you hit the required amount of RP, but aren't ranked high enough in a matchmaking gametype, you'll be promoted "horizontally" instead of actually ranking up.

Like, if you have 150 RP but but aren't level 20 in any gametype you'll become a Lieutenant Grade 3 instead of a Captain.

Is it me, or does Halo 3 feature no clipping at all? I've only played for one night, but I haven't noticed any at all.

What happened to BTB? --edt, nevermind.

I played some BTB this morning and I thought it was relatively laggy, and that's with 12 players. I feel that Microsoft should absolutely set up dedicated servers, but that's another issue.

I prefer BTB and will probably play it exclusively in the retail version (unless the lagginess does not improve).

edit: Though, I have to say, I'm improving quickly. My K/D ratio is back over 1/2!

I agree 100%. Bungie is doing so much with this title and it's going to drive a lot of hardware for a long time to come. I get that the peer to peer model is pervasive over Live, but Microsoft and Bungie should really work out something for the brand flagship to make it as enjoyable and stable online as possible. Don't know if it's too late in the process now, but it sure would be nice.

It really just comes down to the fact that I think they should offer them. The game is Microsoft Game Studios' biggest game ever, will have a thriving online community for years and years to come, the feature is offered by competitors in games that have more players, and, frankly, the game kind of needs them with 12+ people.

I don't want to get into a long or drawn out argument over it, but-- as a gamer and not as a business man-- I really feel Microsoft should pony up and provide gamers with them for this game. It's too important not to.

Try meleeing with the sniper rifle. To me it feels like it has the longest range. I'm horrible and firing it, but if I happen to find it lying around I'll sometimes pick it up for use as a club.

I agree with you. But I just don't see it happening. I don't know, I guess playing those games on Resistance has spoiled me when it comes to P2P. But I can still live without it.

I need to start playing with GAF peoples...my K/D ratio is suffering because I constantly have retarded team-mates that:

1.) Leave the game/ Lag
2.) Kill each other
3.) Suck.

Maybe I should just quit playing Team Skirmish (it requires you to be more risky then Team Slayer so you can get the flag, grab the land, etc).

Anyways, please add me and save my ratio from falling further.

Me too. I hate putting 13+ kills every game only to have a teammate with less than 3 kills who ruins it for everybody else.

What's your gamertag? There are quite a few times we have only three people and could use a fourth.

I am serious. Matchmaking is kinda broken right now. I will get paired with really good people or really crappy people. Almost never people at my level of skill like in Halo 2. I hope that this happens because people arent used to the game, and not because suddenly Bungie decided to pair 2 noobs with 2 pros in each team.

You have to give the system time to get every player to their respective skill "Level"

the game has only been out for a week!

I remember when Halo 2 first came out. I got slaughtered in some games and I slaughtered in others for the first couple of weeks. It'll take time to iron out everything. And then, when the game finally ships, it'll start over again.

I've noticed that one team is almost always stacked to the gills. And I find myself playing with a bunch of privates on my team with no mic half the time.

I've never liked to play solo over team based, but I'm diggin' it right now because you don't have to rely on anyone but yourself. I usually end up first or second and I don't have to deal with idiots on my team.

PS: the dpad to talk isn't preventing any assholes from flooding the team speak. Just change it already. :(

Totally agree about dedicated servers. I understand that it would be a massive financial undertaking to both purchase and setup as well as maintain for years. But it would pay off as a showcase to the Live platform by having the killer app actually have showcase performance. And as a paying customer of Live, I don't care about the back-end - I expect to log on and have a good experience. I don't want to have to decided between a laggy big game or a solid small one.

All that said, my Big Team Training games were all playable last night, about half with noticable (but not game-breaking) lag. That is a big improvement over the previous night. If Bungie can get the experience with 12 or 16 as good as it is with 8 - where I have yet to have a laggy game - then I'm happy.

I think they're improving everything as time goes on. That's what these tests are for.
