Just an update on these, I've seen my first Colonel (Three silver stars) in the wild:

Personally, I plan on intentionally not playing any ranked games so I can remain non-commissioned and "low" on the rankings in the beta and even the full version this fall. I plan on using it as a personal badge to the fact that I still have regular sex and function in normal society. I can see some people took it a different direction...

Concerning Halo 3, I heart the new Banshee and this means a lot because it was one of my favorite vehicles in Halo 1 and 2. That being said, apart from it being utterly perfect, I have trouble seeing my fuel rod mortars connect and explode on the ground or in the water. I hope I'm not the only one and I'm nearly certain it's already been spotted and repaired in the proper build...

Of course. Most of us understand that the Beta is designed specifically to work these kinks out, and let's hope they can get all the netcode flowing smoothly. Still, it would be nice to see servers for Matchmaking, even if customs or some smaller game types remained p2p.

Well, yeah. That was my point with that last paragraph.

At the end of the day, as a consumer I don't care about how they do it, I just hope for solid connections. The 4 vs 4 games are more solid and more consistantly so than my Halo 2 games ever were, so I'm hoping bigger games get there as well. I'll be a good little Beta tester and keep playing it.

I think the mortars are a biproduct of lag or something. When I went on my 22-0 run with the 'shee I would shoot fuel rod mortars and get kills but I'd never see the blast. It'd be funny because bodies would just randomly go flying.

Totally agree about dedicated servers. I understand that it would be a massive financial undertaking to both purchase and setup as well as maintain for years. But it would pay off as a showcase to the Live platform by having the killer app actually have showcase performance. And as a paying customer of Live, I don't care about the back-end - I expect to log on and have a good experience. I don't want to have to decided between a laggy big game or a solid small one.

All that said, my Big Team Training games were all playable last night, about half with noticable (but not game-breaking) lag. That is a big improvement over the previous night. If Bungie can get the experience with 12 or 16 as good as it is with 8 - where I have yet to have a laggy game - then I'm happy.

I think its time MS steps up and offers dedicated servers for all ranked matches. Maybe customs can be all peer to peer, but dedicated servers would do so much for eliminating cheaters out of ranked matches.

And if Bungie has any influence in this, than by all means, wink and nudge all you can... but I know that this is ultimately MS's responsiblity.

I think Bungie calls a lot of the shots on their game. If Bungie wants something, more than likely, they'll get it.

I suspect Bungie does indeed get most the ponies they as for (hello custom built studio off the Microsoft campus), but some things are out of their control. I think this is one of them. What developer would PREFER to use P2P over dedicatated servers? They want everyone to have a great experience with their game no matter what.

BTW, I played one match of VIP snowbound, and my team-mates just yelled at each other, and alot at me. I hate when people do that, it doesn't make me perform better, it only makes me suck. It's totally demoralizing when people do that. UGH. I haven't had a good Halo 3 experience for the past couple of days. The public beta group is quickly evolving into idiots.

That's true. And I know Frankie has said on here plenty of times it won't happen. But maybe with the success of the Beta, they'll think twice about it.

And I just realized earlier...I can't play custom soundtracks while in the Beta :-( I was hoping to snipe people and gun them down with warthogs and banshees while listening to some Metallica.

Yeah but Sony is doing it with Warhawk, Motorstorm and Resistance. For free. I think it's really stupid that MS don't want to add dedicated servers for the biggest game this year.

It would cost them a ridiculous amount of money, and not having dedicated servers isn't really going to stop anyone from buying the game.

Gotta admit this isnt makin MS look good at all. Especially considering they're chargin for live. But the only way things'll change is if we start makin a stink about it as they know H3 is gonna sell boatloads regardless.

But, Sony isn't doing it with Halo3... and there is a huge difference in bandwith between them. You could add up Warhawk, Motorstorm, and Resistance... and I'm willing to bet it wont come within 1/10th the bandwith Halo3 will eventually eat up. Which is why I really feel ranked matches only should be hosted on servers.

True. However, those games are not going to have millions of players. Halo 2 sold eight million copies, and over four million unique players. Halo 3 will be bigger. On a more seriously note though, Sony is also getting 0 from users. Microsoft is at least getting something. I mean Blizzard does it (at a steeper fee, but obviously more content and services are provided) and I would wager it often has many more concurrent users.

I've come to grips with my dorkiness, and the fact that I dont leave my house some days because I play Halo all day.

Fortunately so has my girlfriend

I REALLY like how when you lose a match, it doesn't drop your medal ranking. So say I wanted to group w/some friends who were new to the game, I wouldn't mind losing because it's not dropping me down or anything and we can have a good time, and vice versa. I was never very anal about my Halo 2 rank, but sometimes I hated playing with this one guy because we'd all get dragged way down :lol

That's a really good point.

I guess you have to choose between being a "Tank" so to speak or support, and your sensitivity will reflect that, because your needs are different.

Yeah, the blade at the bottom of the spiker does extra damage. A jumping melee with the Brute Shot is a one-hit kill as well.
