The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Agreed about the horn, btw (first thing I did after I hopped on one was pull the right trigger to see if it had one).

Well what I mean is that if you're holding the bomb or flag it should just make you enter the passenger seat/back of the mongoose automatically - you can't drive and hold things at the same time (obviously) so the game should be smart enough to figure out what the player wants to do. Right now there is no prompt at all - you can't get in the mongoose while holding something unless there's already a driver in it. Not good and not consistent with the warthog behavior.

Does not seem like a difficult thing to fix:
If holding nothing = enter driver seat
If holding something (bomb, flag etc) = enter back passenger seat
If someone is in drivers seat already = enter back passenger seat

Still, you have to remember that ranks have nothing to do with someone's individual skill. So they could just be better than you are and are on their way up to higher levels, but are just matched to your range for now. Pretty much the only thing you can do is wait it out... or quit matches until you get to a low level. :lol

This thought occured to me, since really good people have to slog through the slums like everyone else. I'm getting so thoroughly dominated in every match that I'm having doubts. But coincidences happen, you could be right.

But I still am left wondering what I gotta do to lower the number rank. I seriously lost A LOT of games, not even close to competing.

In the meantime, I've gotta lay off the dual spikers until I figure out how to use grenades effectively. It seems I can't get by without using them, unlike in R6 Vegas.

Well you're getting matched up by rank, and you don't lose rank when you lose games.

Win: +1 RP
Lose: 0 RP gained/lost.
Quit: -2 RP

So as I said, you pretty much have to deal, get better or just quit a lot. ;)

We get matched up by skill number, Rank is just a metter of how long you've been playing, really. I'm a sergeant but a measly Skill 6, so I play against very good privates and very shitty lieutenants etc.

EDIT: Or am I wrong? o_O

I wish I were better.. K/D ratio still at 0.79 :(

Yep, RP points (ie military rank). When it searches for the range of players to match you up with, that's the point range it's using.

We're talking about social/training games. When you play actual ranked games is when the numeral ranking is taken into consideration.

AH HA! That's why I'm getting confused. I am in fact talking about normal rumble pit stuff. So skill number is being used, it can go down, I just have to suck more?

Night looks awesome, but it's hard enough to see what side you're on in the Snowbound Tunnels NOW. Unless they give each person a permanently on flashlight, you're ****ed :)

Permanent flashlight = bullet magnet
 
Holy hell! Bungie give us a night/day feature! What a simple yet awesome idea. Would make a world of difference in some games. They could make guns without a scope feature a light by clicking in the right thumbstick.

The sniper rifle in Halo 1 had night vision built into it that turned on when you zoomed.

Imagine a snipers game on Valhalla at night using that!!! :D

Halo 1 had a flashlight button you could use with all guns. To enable the night vision on the sniper you had to turn on your flashlight while scoped in. Valhalla would be sweet at night, especially with night vision.

I want an option to turn it off, I quit Halo 2 when they introduced/increased it.
If there is no option to turn it off then no deal, I won't buy the game.
 
Concerning the Warthog: I think a lot of people wouldn't have as much of a problem with it if it's turret wasn't so terribly powerful. Thing is crazy accurate even over long distances.

I like that it's tough and doesn't blow apart after a few grenades now, that you're forced to aim more for the people riding it than the 'hog itself to stop their rampage. It's firepower just needs to be toned down a bit, so folks on foot can have a bit more of a chance to do something to even after that gunner catches a glimpse of 'em.

Concerning the Mongoose: There's actually a lot I want to say about it, but I don't really have it in me to go into a rant. All I'll say is that I halfway agree with what raYne was saying about it a short while back, and expected it to have a faster pick-up than it does. They're quite plentiful though, and they spawn quick. That's good.

It's always been there. It's just a bit closer to Halo 1's standards then Halo 2's, not nearly as intrusive as the latter's. Some people were asking if it was even there when the public beta first started.

There is a lot less auto aim than there was in Halo 2, it really isn't that bad at all.

It's definitely been increased since the release of BTB.
I use the plasma pistol alot and I've suddenly started hitting with it 90% of the time, I was playing VIP on Valhalla and when I went over the hill the auto-aim changed who I was targetting.
 
I agree that the auto aim increased 'somehow' very recently, my targeter now literally autotracks people I'm shooting at when they jump.. never used to do that.
 
So I finally got my first KILLTACULAR of the beta. I was playing BTB VIP. I was standing on top of the central hill facing the lake base when 5 of their team (including the VIP) man-cannoned to the center. I threw the trip mine from the peak of the hill into the stream. 3 of them died once it exploded. The VIP lost his shields so I just BR'ed him to death, and then the last one I jumped down to BR to death. It was awesome.

It also re-inforces the fact that I wish Killtacular was 4 kills within 4 seconds instead of 5 kills. It'll be really hard to get it on 4v4 games. It's just one of those classic throwbacks to Halo 1 that I wish they had left intact. Hopefully they'll change it for the final game. I mean: DOUBLE KILL, TRIPLE KILL, OVERKILL doesn't have the same ring to it. Here's to hoping....

You get points for winning. You lose points for losing. It's weighted depending on the skill level of the other players. If you lose to someone three skill levels higher than your own, you don't lose many points, just as you don't gain many for defeating someone of a lower skill level.

It might be that you are losing to a couple of people of higher rank, yet defeating three other players below you and gaining points for that. If a couple of them are higher rank, then you could still gain a good amount of points. You don't need to take first place to move up skill levels. And you don't need to rank last to lose them.

Oh that sucks.

That really sucks if they have increased it. It was perfect when I played it (before BTB was added).
 
I noticed it for the first time on Valhalla. I was aiming with the BR at a player near the turret when a hog drove by, cut left, and jumped the river, dragging my reticle along with for a few moments. It really did feel magnetic, since I wasn't prepared for it.

But if everyone had one constantly, it'd make for some crazy games. Head on battles could end up blinding other players prematurely. Either that or make sure all of one team are Spartans and the other covenant.
 
Wanna see a game where flashlight gets you killed, DOOM3 Multiplayer! only game that really makes you wanna hide in the dark (lights out kiddos)
 
I did not notice any change in autoaim last night, either in Big Team Trainging or Team Skirmish. It is still so minimal as to be nearly imperceptable.

Auto-aim isn't super bad. I was just saying that it was the first time I had noticed it. It was kinda jarring. But yeah, I think you need a little assistance with the analogs. It's just not precise enough for fast twitch gaming. My two cents anyway.

Had some good solo games last night. Did well in the rumble. Had a +15 win on High Ground. SMG is nice in those tight quarters. Lot's of doubles waiting for people to engage in the open base side and then sneaking in from behind to take care of them with frags, SMG, and melee attacks.

Some good GAF games too with squicken and crew. Fun stuff, if a little laggy again in BTB, and some decent skirmish games. Someone told me to get raped, which is awesome, though I'm not sure I will take him up on the suggestion. I likes my butthole too much to hnad it over at the whim of some online Halo 3 player, even if he did kill me.

Can't you just do it by holding down RB if they're moving slow? I managed to take a Ghost that way. Haven't done a Mongoose, but I assumed it would work there as well.

That only works on the ghost, banshee and warthog. For the warthog, you have to jack from the drivers side. If you jack from the passengers side, you can melee as well.
 
I am super concerned with the lag. When ever I play a slightly laggy game in team slayer, they always have crazy latency over me. They pop out of nowhere on my radar and three shots with the carbine before I can even respond. I am in green bar, and all of my live ports are fowarded properly.

its probably just your connection.

go to dslreports.com and run the speed test.

Not when they jump.......I thought my controller was possessed at some points during some matches last night.
 
Nobody should be complaining about aim assist on Halo 3 until you go back to Halo 2 :lol

I tried that last night and besides the fact of holding down RB everytime I wanted to reload or pick up a weapon
I got killed that way three times
the aim assist was horrible. I didn't know how bad it was until last night. Sniping was actually harder for me.

Only in BTB or overall? I haven't really noticed any change lately. So if it's just the former, I have no idea since I've never played BTB, nor have I used the PP yet in general.

I'll be sure to keep an eye out when I play later.
