The Halo 3 Beta Thread

I suspect you can choose from Spartan, Elite, and Brute models in MP, and there will be a far higher degree of customisation (if not quite fully customisable livery).

in other news, I have not played Halo 3 since THURSDAY MORNING. >:(

I wouldn't mind if they kept multiplayer Spartans only. Elites were so odd in Halo 2. As a Sniper, they were a lot easier to shoot in the head too.

This may be going a bit too far off-topic here, but I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice about video capture? (it's related to Halo 3!)

I run a small message board, and while we're all pretty bad at the game, we really enjoy it when things are evenly matched (either if we manage to fill a room, or get matched up with equally bad players) and it's quite cool being able to use the replay function to analyse our games and see what we're doing wrong, to see things from another player's perspective, or just to give an overview of the levels and point out where most of the weapons / equipment spawns. While I didn't realise it ingame, it was very obvious that my sensitivity was too high at first, for example, as I was always leading my targets too much. (normally I'm around 8-10 sensitivity on console shooters, but I find 4 works best for me in H3)

Right now, my current capture method is crap though - I'm using my digital camera for the video (it wouldn't be so bad if I could lock the exposure / white-balance on it) and optical into my MacBook Pro to capture uncompressed audio, which is then used to replace the crap sound my camera picks up. (oh, and I'm currently using iMovie HD for editing, which sucks - I don't think I can even crop the video in it)

Here's an example of an excellent game we had last night:

http://sr-388.net/videos/Halo3-3pt1.mp4
http://sr-388.net/videos/Halo3-3pt2.mp4

(when I say it was an excellent game, I mean it was a lot of fun - as I mentioned, we're all pretty bad)

I'd really like to be able to get some better quality footage though, especially if the replays aren't going to be able to be viewed in the final game.

Firstly, it'll have to be an external solution, as it's a laptop. I suspect HDMI is out of the question, but are there any external boxes that can capture progressive video at all? (presumably they'd be Firewire/Firewire 800 rather than USB if they exist, which is fine)

If not, I guess that means I'll have to use composite and switch leads all the time.
Would I see much difference between a cheap device like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-USB-2-0-V...QihZ019QQcategoryZ148483QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
and something like this? http://www.dabs.com/productview.asp...&SearchKey=All&SearchMode=All&NavigationKey=0
I'd happily pay more for that Pinnacle box if it gave me better results. (or anything else, if there are better options out there)

I'd prefer to be able to do everything inside OSX, but can boot to Windows if necessary.

Any help or advice is appreciated. :)

Quoting this simply because I'd like to be pointed in the way of a guide as well.
:)

I'm getting tired of this shit. I can't aim for some reason. I'm getting worse and worse at aiming as I play.

Is anyone using a different sensitivity than 3?

I use 6. Makes it a little harder sniping because I overcorrect, but it gives me a huge advantage in shotgun duels.

So after a certain point on Rumble pit, should i just go ahead and get used to a higher sensitivity. I use 2 for a really long time, but its not workin anymore:(

6 is what I use too. for a long time in Halo 2 I used 10, but in the end I decided it was hurting precise aim and aiming at distance too much. 6 is a nice balance between being able to adjust and turn quickly without harming my sniping too much.

So last night I tried a few tips to try to fix my game freezing problem with the Halo 3 Beta. I detached my HD, put it back on, cleared the cache. I played a few games with no problems. I watched the Pulp Fiction DVD last night which didn't give me a problem. I played a few games this morning, and after like my 3rd or 4th one it froze up again.

I have no idea why it's doing it. The only games to ever freeze on my 360 are Halo 2 and the Halo 3 Beta. And it's really starting to bother me.

just a suggestion but you may want to have your disc drive checked out as well as your memory. both my friend and i had our 360's freeze on madden 07 which has considerably more going on than the beta. honestly your 360 may just have a crappy brain like mine:(

You can crop on re-encode using either VisualHub or ffmpegx.

That was great. I love your shotgun tactic for territory 2, I'll have to try that next time. I'd have thought the other team would have worked it out for the second round though :lol

hmm yeah, honestly 360's are notorius for freezin cause of ram problems, or whatever the equivalent is in an 360. mine only freezes madden. dont know exactly but it is really annoying ot say the least. id ask some gaming nerd at like gamespot or somethin:(

Wow, the choices in Rumble Pit really suck today. Most of the time Shitty Snipers. The few times there is something good like King of the Hill or Oddball idiots veto it.

Note to Bungie: Muting needs to work in pre-game lobby already so that I can silence those f*ckig retards. No way I can do it during an intense game.

EDIT: It does actually. great!

Hah. It's awesome when people don't have any idea what Crazy King (or whatever the name is) is about.

I hate the veto feature (expect for Shitty Snipers in Valhalla). Nobody ever plays Crazy King or Oddball, the most fun things ever. Everybody just wants Slayer.

Yeah, Oddball and Crazy King matches are all too rare. Slayer, Rockets and Snipers get old pretty fast.

Thanks, I need a way to take a separate audio file and replace what's already in there (and get it synced) can these do that? I loaded up the demos, but didn't see a way to do it. My camera basically doesn't pick up any sound unless I crank my speakers, which I can't really do after 1-2am (usually when we finish playing) and even if I do, it still sounds crap.

I thought they would've noticed too, but taking the risk again seemed to pay off. :D As I said, none of us are that good at the game though. Stuff like that is why I'm doing these videos, but generally, that's probably the safest point at #2, that I've noticed anyway. If someone throws a grenade down, it usually bounces out of your way enough so that it doesn't kill you, or you have enough time to move. No-one can see you coming from the left of the right either, and you're far enough away from the walls that a grenade thrown from that direction usually doesn't take you out either.

My favourite point in that match was taking out the entire team in the first round with the power drainer though - so satisfying. :D Also: I didn't realise the power drainer passed through bubble shields until last night.

I only watched part 1 of the video, but I must say I have received strategies from you. Thank you for the strategies.

Edit: XBL username Hoversaurs. I'm logging into Teh Haloz Triple Beta now.

King of the Hill isn't rare enough. I hate that and Crazy King with a passion.

All it does is turn the game into a shitfest (especially on smaller maps) and you'll undoubtedly have 2-3 people who don't care about the objective (surprise!) and just run around playing it like normal Slayer.

Oh, and the fact that the hill border changes to your main color, making it impossible to see out of, makes it especially great!

Yup. Very good territories strategies for High Ground. Grab shotty. Grab bubbleshield. Place over 1. Take one. Move to bunker with shotty. Hide in corner. Take 2. Move up stairs. Open Doors. Take Energy Drainer. Take territory 4. And so on. Excellent.

It's definitely an adjustment especially after playing Halo2 for years. Try lowering your sensitivity to 2 and go from there.

Yeah, I'm starting to sour on the veto system. Sometimes it makes me so mad that I almost put an axe through my TV.

That's my favorite new feature of King of the Hill, which is my second-favorite gametype. to each thier own. :p

The whole point of the game type is the defend your hill, so how can not being able to see out of it be a good thing?

Bungie really didn't think that one through.

I disagree - the whole point is to make those battles more interesting, close-quarters. On Valhalla especially you can't see into the area well, but the "hill" is HUGE - so just tossing grenades in won't do it since the guys inside are not clustered up in one spot. You gotta plow right on it. Love it.

The rules for "sudden death" right now suck though. I played a CTF game on High Ground, and we had the flag and were running with it towards the cap point. We ran out of time about 15 feet from scoring. :(

Eh? It's easy to see into the Hill on any level.. including Valhalla. As I said, it's seeing out that's all sorts of screwed up.

Anyway, yep. Sudden Death has it's issues as well. I'm not even sure if there's a defined amount of time, since it seems to vary even if it's the same situation from a previous game/round.

Since we're on the scoring issues: Another thing I've experienced is multiple players hitting the frag limit at the same time. There was one game when another player and myself hit the limit simultaneously... and even though I had less deaths (25/6 vs 25/11 according to the end game results) he got first place. Not really a big issue, but I found it a bit weird.

I've chaulked it up to lag (his results being in before mine), but it'd be nice if the overall play was taken into consideration in those cases.

That is a problem in a lot of modes. People that don't even try for the objectives. Hey, idiots, while you're all killing each other out there nowhere near the hill/oddball, I'm racking up points! :P If you want to win oddball on High Ground, just grab the oddball and head for that little patch of coast and hide behind the rocks next to the mongoose. Everyone will be so busy killing everyone else in the open part of the map that they'll never get to you and if they do, they'll be half dead.

This is true. I've had people attack me, and seen people attack each other, when neither player is anywhere near the ball/hill. It's just completely retarded since the ball holder or king is just collecting points while they're wasting time.

But it's worse in KotH because you're trying to gain points in the Hill and people who don't give a damn are 30 feet away shooting you with no intention of actually playing properly. Even worse is when they have a sniper (on Valhalla especially) and they kill you from the other side of the map. WTF people?!

I just wrapped up my night as far as Halo 3 goes and we concluded our evening with Crazy King on High Ground, it was by far the most fun we had. I came in 2nd with 99 points and I was inches away from the Hill when the match was over. Sure it has little to do with tactics or shooting skill or whatever but it's fun as hell regardless. I think Crazy King on Snowbound and Rockets on High Ground are my 2 favorite modes in the Beta.
