The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Is the thread being locked when the beta is over?
Probably not. It will just pitter out as we move away from the beta. Were I to predict, I'd say we top out at around 17k. Which is absurd. When I made the thread, I though four, five thousand, tops.

The graphics are not a letdown.... but I really wish Bungie would put a feature that helped you to calibrate the color, brightness and contrast settings in the game. That way I wouldnt have problems with the dark areas on Halo 3, which by the way are far too many compared to Halo 2, but really add to the atmosphere.

Legendary Edition is for you.

The Legendary Edition will be released in limited quantities and arrive in a highly collectible Spartan helmet case that no hardcore "Halo" fan should be without, along with two bonus disks full of supplemental content. The first disk will provide exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage and videos, including a high-definition "Making of 'Halo 3'" documentary showcasing the Bungie team and its effort to create the most anticipated title in the industry's history; numerous high-definition featurettes documenting the creative design processes involved in developing the game; and even a look at some early game concepts and their evolution through the game's development. The disk will also include an audio-visual calibration tool, never before seen on a video game and custom designed by the "Halo 3" graphics and audio team to make the most of fans' high-definition home theaters, for the ultimate "Halo 3" and Xbox 360™ audio and video performance.

I hope the calibration tool has some nifty little host or something, like the RvB guys or Mister Chief.

Don't know why I'd want that, I just do.

Halo 3 multiplayer looks 'ok' but it has a lot of problems graphically, I mean come on. The up close textures on the 3d grass is blurry, the non 3d grass is like a big blurry texture, there are no weather effects or any real lighting, and the models.. could look like this.

Now im pretty 'ok' with the multi graphics as im not going for a big cinematic experience, and gears of war has proven that sometimes too much pretty graphics can detract from the gameplay in multi. However, halo 3 multi is hardly as far as the 'style' can go technically, otherwise we would be seeing cg level halo stuff right?

Ill buy halo even if it looks like an n64 game of course, but I told so many that it would blow graphics whores away :)

Blurry? What textures are you looking at?

I think the graphics are great. I love the fuzzy sheen that metallic objects have, and the lighting on interiors is fantastic.

Hate when people quit, I decide to play some teamslayer. So I hope on, find a game fast and my whole time quits before the game starts... Well I just said "**** it, i'll play anyway". When the game starts one of the other team's members quit, so its only 1 vs 3. Long story short I win, 24-25 to 6. The game went on for the full 15 minutes, plus it was on vallhala. It just sucks when people quit...

What?

Edit: to elaborate, I think MP in Halo 3 is very close to that announcement trailer.

see the multi doesn't look that clean on my tv, especially valhala which is jaggy as hell from a distance and the grass texture is just.. like forza 2s. heh.

the announcement trailer had all these awesome smoke effects, lighting and a much more 'deep' look to the architecture, where as things in halo 3 look like super cleaned up halo 2 with some added things.

Or I should say, both gears and lost planet look better to me, id question pdz looking near the multiplayer beta actually.

The only real difference is the visors.

actually the maps that they're using for detail on the armor don't have as much depth, plus the armor reacts quite differently to light. I say the light changemight have been for performance reasons (hard to tell), and the detail change is for balance visually. (what i mean is the cleaner the texture is against a rough surface, the easier it is to spot... the less it blends to the immediate surroundings)

they ARE essentially the same model and textures though, all it is... is tweaked shaders/depth maps

It looks pretty much like that on my tv, there is some very slight alaising, but really very little.

Agreed, and I think that's a theme that runs through the visual style of MP. I refer to is as "clarity" - everything stands out and has a streamlined look versus the more gritty campaign shots.

Geeze...as if there weren't enough quitters in BTB, you also get guys trying to do the custom game glitch in ranked games. Since that guy invites the whole party into it, I'm left by myself or with just one other person. Slaughter get.

What's up with standby, btw? Isn't there a way to do away with that? Cheaters, glitchers, lag, quitters, and all around assholes. All that plus the amount of time it takes for matchmaking, it's getting incredibly hard to get a full game in.

yeah that has to be it, it's not like the blue guys in valhala don't blend in with the surroundings or anything.

:P

Also, halo 3 beta looks better in still shots then it does in motion to me, the animations and fluidity of the game are NOT what I expected, the animations aren't very fluid (though they seem better then halo 2) and it's just not a game that benefits from being seen in motion.

On a larger hdtv and in motion, halo 3 looks fine, but compared to lost planet and gears it doesn't do near the amount of cool stuff. It very much reminds me of PDZ with a better art style, but pdz had sharper textures on the ground.

ok first off everyone complaining about the graphics needs to quit. bungie has never promised awesome graphics in any of the previous games, so why should we expect them to wow us now. halo 2 looks tens times better than halo, and of course halo 3 will look ten times better than halo 2. it already does, so just quit complaining. and just enjoy what is going to be a great game. ha ok rant over.

I GOT MY FIRST SPLATTER KILL TODAY! AND MY FIRST HIJCK OF THE BANSHEE. IM SO PROUD OF MYSELF!

halo 1 was the game that made me a believer in the xbox, halo 2 is one of the top of its classes on the xbox and was the best looking console game at release.

Bungie if I recall also stated halo 3 would be comparable to the best looking games out at the time, but right now, it's not as good looking as games released in 2006.

Of course, this isn't me trying to bash bungie, id very much love for them to blow me away with the final product, I just kind of figured that microsofts biggest franchise would be some kind of graphical showpiece for the hardware.

Anyways im gonna go play the beta some more.

the animations aren't very fluid

The animation is like the most impressive thing about the graphics to me...

And why not wait til we actually see single player footage before making statements like this? I simply cannot wait to see what the skyboxes in Halo 3 will look like :D

might as well chime in again while crackdown takes 10 minutes to load..

The animations look great sometimes, but not all of the time, it's just that most next gen games have this amazing boost when going from image to motion, with halo 3 the game feels less... 'stable' I guess. The graphics don't seem solid or something, like shimmering or jaggies. It's hard to explain exactly what I mean.

More pronounced lighting, some dust effects, some trees that move and sway in wind, so much could be done that would not ruin the gameplay.

There's dust all over HG, snow drifting on SB, and the trees on HG do sway in the wind...are we playing the same beta? :lol

And leaves falling from the trees on High Ground.

Check out the snow blowing off the mountains in the distance of Snowbound, as well. Gorgeous.

What are you playing H3 on, seriously. It seems as if you are playing a different game from the rest of us.

I haven't seen any dust or snow near something like lost planet. The snow in halo 3 looks like ice with snow texture or something.

I dunno what beta i'm playing, the beta I downloaded off of crackdown the same day everyone else did.

Ultimately, you're comparing styles, LP is flashy, Halo is more sterile, especially in MP. Like I said, just wait until we see some campaign stuff, it's gonna be different than MP as far as effects and atmosphere go.

I sure hope Bungie does not change the weapons very much like they seem to be suggesting in the new weekly update.

This constant state of flux makes watching your reactions to the beta more interesting, because while tears have been shed about changes or lack of changes to your favorite or least favorite weapons of all time, no weapon in the beta will perform exactly as it does now when the game ships. That could be because of subtle (and not-so-subtle) changes being made to the weapon itself or similar changes to other weapons in the game that affect the way the weapons in the sandboxes operate.

I think the weapon balance is perfect, wouldn't change a thing about it... Yeah the carbine is quite strong but personally I don't think that it needs to be toned down just to be equal with the battle rifle.

My complaints are about the vehicles, specifically the warthog being too powerful which wasn't mentioned in the update. Please tell me that's being fixed.... :(

I think the Carbine would be ok if it's clip was reduced, I killed two people the other night with full shields on each of the guys without reloading/using grenades. I also hate how abundant they are on maps like SB, someone respawns, automatically get a carbine, and they usually spawn behind me, so I don't have a chance :lol

Ha, bet you don't complain when you're tearing everyone up with the turret... :lol

I think with some AA the game will look much nicer. While the aliasing isn't as noticeable on Highground or Snowbound, it seems to really detract from Valhalla for me. Hopefully they will have some implemented by time of release (as I understand it, there is currently no AA at all, right?).

you're right, i've been busted :lol

fun when i'm on the turret and racking up killing sprees so easily. but not so great when i'm on the receiving end!

So while playing Zombies, the red team all crowded into the pipe on High Ground. When swords were out, the whole thing just looked so. damn. good.

Can someone get a pic of that or will I have to do it myself?

Does anyone else find it a little strange that Bungie didnt even so much as acknowledge the fact that people are playing custom games and using the sword/pistol on regular basis? I was very surprised.

Next person to complain about the not-even-beta version of the pistol that isn't even supposed to be in the Beta, that they're not supposed to be using in Custom games, gets a special prize from me. Hint, it is not the good kind of prize.

Ouch he seem mad! Banhammer FTW

i have question. in the second level. there is this blue thing that if you step on it, it will fly you to the middle of the arena or so. however, when i step on it and fly, i keep getting lagged or somehing. i never had this smooth fly[ jump ]. it always "cuts" my way thro,

for example, it fly me to the air and while i am flying, the screen get back to the almost the beginning and so. its like its lagging.

am i the only one with this?
