The Halo 3 Beta Thread

to be perfectly honest, and Halo is my favorite game ever edging out PGR2 by a bit, i'm not surprised.:lol

the beta only has three maps, maybe two or three new weapons, and the new equipment.

the maps are not that great, none of them do anything new to be honest. valhalla is pretty much coag, and offers nothing new besides the man cannons which are worthless in slayer when playing a good team; you'll get mowed down with ease, its like falling to your death.

snowbound is a good map, but played best with no radar:D (shhhh). with radar and only one shotgun, the map is not very balanced when it comes to navigating the tunnels. crouching in bases with shotgun waiting til the red dot walks by is stupid; much better playing a balanced game of no radar.

and high ground, that map just doesnt make sense to me. maybe its the spawn system, maybe its because its designed as a 1 flag ctf map, but i just find the map as completely chaotic and random. its just not fun to play. the weapon layout doesnt seem balanced to me to be perfectly honest.

Only team based modes right? Is it enjoyable if you don't have a steady group of people to team up with (ie. a clan)?

It does seem to be best as a one side objective based map. Spawns are really bad. Just a few games ago, I killed the sniper near it's spawn and a few minutes later sniped the same fellow from the top of the laser tower. Where does he spawn after his demise? Yes, right behind me, I would guess twenty steps. He kills me. Where do I spawn? Just across the map from him near the invis, clear view. I kill him. Totally unfair on all accounts. And very frustrating.
 
While I'm definitely loving the Halo 3 Beta and looking forward to Halo 3 I think I will be relieved to go back and play some Halo 2 this summer. Tons of maps and lots of varients and such.

IMO yes, i've had alot of fun just going in by myself. Its necessary for the team to talk and work together though. and yea aside from bot matches, only team based modes

Well yeh thats the spawning system for yah. Its horrible, but this is beta and i'm sure the spawn system will be better than even Halo 2 when finished.

My complaint is that the map, even when played as a 1 flag CTF, is unbalanced.

Theres one side and theres another; one team spawns base, the other beach. So what happens when playing 1 flag CTF and base team charges sea-side time and spawn camps them?

Obviously sea-side team cant respawn in base because that wouldnt make sense, so they can only spawn sea-side and get continually spawn killed.

The only other possibility would be to spawn the whole sea-side team at right and left caves right before the base, but that would still seem unbalanced because it would be much too close to the base.

So it seems as if this map is a bit too small for any gametype and needs to be expanded in some manner or the layout reworked. Maybe putting the bunker in the middle of the map and players can spawn in or around it.

That's how it works now, and it's fair because that's what they get if they want to spawn camp
 
The spawns on High Ground have the opposite issue for a game like Oddball. For instance, I get killed near the beach and the trek back from the back of the base, to get anywhere even near the ball, even when totally unimpeded, is at least fifteen seconds. For a gametype that is won in 50 seconds, that's juts too much. Backwards spawning. Things should be flipped. Isolated spawns for rumble, nearby (relatively).

Don't laugh too much. I'm seeing the same guys on Shadowrun that I was playing on the Halo3 Beta last week, so the Beta is definitely losing some players since its release. I haven't even fired up the H3 beta since I got Shadowrun.
 
Has anyone tried to deploy a bubble shield on top of a Warthog? I always tell myself I need to try that but I always forget. :lol

I tried playing a few Halo 2 games. My god I don't think I can ever go back. The super Auto aim feels really cheesy after playing H3b.
 
So the new Halo 2 maps were supposed to be free by the beginning of July, I haven't read into this but would it be possible that Bungie made these free the day the Beta is over? Would be a nice gesture to ease the pain.

It would have been pretty funny if you could do that for custom games. The sight of seeing a hog with a bubble over it gives me flashbacks to the car Homer made. :lol Also, it would be a pretty funny strat to protect the flag carrier. Of course for ranked it would be abused pretty badly, so custom only. :p

I finally got around to it the other day, where I tried to get it in the passengers seat, but it fell through.

The coolest thing I've done is go up and down in it when put on a Grav Lift. Got like 10 kills too!

yeh well the spawn system for anything besides CTF and Territories is very random.

theres only a limited number of spawn positions, and regardless of the gametype, you'll spawn there. Doesnt matter if youre playing KOTH High Ground and the hill is near portable lift, someone is still going to spawn end of base; mongoose may or may not be there and youre stuck trecking cross map, losing a lot of time to capture hill.

Then again, High Ground is such a small map and spawning FFA players, four on beach and 4 on base(not back base), would still not make sense because theyd be too close.

The way I see it High Ground can only support team slayer matches, with much better weapon balancing then in the beta and obviously better spawns; Bomb matches(not neutral) and 1 Flag CTF(possibly two flag CTF) but only with a reworked spawn system.

For me it seems like High Ground is missing something. I dont like how theres a base which provides so much cover and this open area beach spawn. The bunker should be more centralized, the sniper cave should have shield doors so it can be attacked or exited from than just two sides, and beach spawn should have some sort of raised area providing cover in situations where a team is spawn trapped. The camo ledge is not very appropriate because it doesnt provide the same cover that the base does, plus its difficult to see enemies through the trees at times.
 
I have the worst connection problems with this beta, all my friends are fine. The game will kick me back to lobby occasioanally while everyone else loads into BTB. Then when I am in a game, if anyone leaves the game, it leaves me staring at a loading screen for five minutes while my friends play away; To finally be kicked back to that lonely lobby all by myself. I won't be able to play the retail unless its fixed.

check your NAT settings. if anything but OPEN, configure your router.
 
Starting to think of life after Beta... it has gone so fast. Done more than 200 matches since it came out, which feels like yesterday.

I might try the game that came free with the Beta, that GTA style game.

Has anyone got experience of going back to Halo 2 after playing Halo 3 Beta? Is it too big of a culture shock in terms of visuals?

Yeah, I've been thinking about possibly splitting it up (pending mod permission). There's a lot of ways to split things up - spoiler discussion versus non-spoiler, campaign versus MP, etc. I think the latter is the best way to go. It will be filled with people, um, sharing things, before long. Films, and those "other stuff" Bungie has hinted a few times. :D

It's funny cause it's true. Although i'd give them credit for playing anything in the first place. The multiplayer thread will just turn into a Nutter/Ramirez/Dopey/Ironclad chat log :P

I was just going off the Halo 2 clan thread that had like 500 people, and it slowly whittled down to me,nutter,ironclad,dopey,HG,duderon, and TJ members being the only GAFFERs that played. :P
 
So what's this Halo 2 "Double-Shot" I'm hearing about? Something about making the Battle Rifle shoot twice at once? Is it a huge exploit that's steamrolling the game? Or is it just something annoying you run into once in a while. And what is Bungie's stance on it? My summer might consist of a mix of Halo 2, Gears of War and Shadowrun online.
 
Btw, anyone else having problems uploading films to their share? Mine go through the whole upload, then magically don't show up. :(

It's another button combination, I don't think many people can do it with any kind of consistency, I haven't noticed it much anyways.
 
The weirdest thing I've done with a deployable involved the Gravity Lift on High Ground during a territories match. My team was on defense and running to the plot inside the bunker. We took everyone out, but I kept getting shot at from long distance. I finally spot this poor guy on the ceiling near the window, lodged in a state of perpetual levitation above the gravity lift. For some reason I did my usual fire-and-charge for the mêlée with the Assault Rifle - which killed him, and got me stuck in his place.

I actually yelled, "Hey guys wait for me! Somebody get me down!" as the rest of my team ran off to the next plot under assault. I couldn't shoot the Gravity Lift below me because it was right under my feet. I hung there, me and the ceiling, for about fifteen seconds until one of the attackers came by and (mercifully) took me out. I must say, he seemed surprised to see me there. :lol

I got lasered by a guy that was stuck like that. I looked at him as I waited to respawn and laughed. I like using the Grav Lift if I'm being chased, so my pursuer flys up in the air, and lands with a sticky grenade on his face (gift from me).

Most likely because Halo 2 wasn't that good (IMO)...too many glitches, cheaters, and blue screens.

Yeah I just hopped on and made a Halo 2 Custom Game to try it out. In like 10-minutes of trying it I pulled it off once. I would think that it would mess you up more often than it would help you. Hope there aren't people online who've perfected it:lol

Don't they just play at LAN-based tournaments though? That's much different from playing the game online.

If not, whatever. I didn't like it for all the reasons I listed before. Thank god they fixed all that stuff in Halo 3.
 
The glitches were not known about for a long time as far as I know...I remember it becoming really popular when the first map pack hit, the other stuff was fixed mostly in the first month or two.

You want to give beach campers even more incentive to camp? That's just wrong. High Ground as an objective map is fine as it is, it doesn't need many changes.

And the respawn in High Ground isn't that bad compared to Snowbound. You only have two general respawn locations there: either somewhere near the beach (close to the bunker too) or inside the actual base. On Snowbound, people can respawn anywhere.

I like both maps, moreso than Valhalla, but Snowbound's respawning is definitely the worst of the lot. Doesn't excuse High Ground's issues in certain modes, but eh...
 
Just hopped on two play a few games of Rumble Pit and had quite a tour. I played three games and won all three. Played Shotty Snipers on Valhalla, won that. Played Slayer on Snowbound. Had a 19 kill killing spree. Needed just one more! But I won that anyway. Was wreaking havoc with the Shotgun and sticks. Then I played Slayer on High Ground and won that with some tradition AR and melee action. Good night for Halo 3 for me:)

its pretty difficult to do and i doubt you'll have anyone use it on you in matchmaking. dont worry much about it.

you should play a good team and theyll show you how bad the high ground spawn is during a 1 flag CTF game or a territories game.

sea side has little to no cover, is "low ground", and if base team has control of middle, the opposite team has but one power weapon they can use; and thats if the base team doesnt already control that.

and high ground and snowbound spawns are equally as bad; in snowbound though the way the map is set, players usually gather at the bases and the beta's spawn system is set so most spawn behind or under bases. in fact, besides base spawns, the only other spawn that exists is territory 3 spawn.

i can tell you now that high grounds spawn system is exactly the same. at base you either spawn near mongoose or left staircase, thats it. on beach you spawn tree area or near rockets.

how many times have you had someone rush you power drainer room because they were coming up the stairs? yes, they spawned at mongoose and thats the first place they go. if you havent noticed most fights in FFA center around second level of base(the power drain, and adjacent rooms) and mid map where players usually rush after they spawn at trees.

yeh i can do it fairly easily too when not in game, but during an actual battle where people strafe and dodge around, its pretty difficult. notice the "find some suckers that can stand still":lol what a scrub. 1v1s with your tutorial buddy are not "real games".

speaking of which, next weekend is MLG Meadowlands. the mlg site provides free VOD so if anyone wants to watch some of the pros play you will see that they rarely use double shots.
 
A nice use for the Grav lift on High Ground is if you are in the bunker and you dont want people jumping down from the roof hole, you put the grav lift in the Bunker where the hole is so no one can drop down.

High Ground has so many great uses for Equipment. It's really a great showcase of how great of an addition Equipment is.
