The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Yep, and if you can't afford the 1080p one, don't worry - the 720p sets are still astonishing. And all of the old school plasma problems (screen burn and so on) are history.

And if you CAN afford the 1080p set, Halo 3 looks pretty sweet in Campaign and MP in 1080p.
So this is the official TV of Halo 3? CRAP! So much for the white Samsung TV that was advertised with the 360.... I bought one of those. Well, at least I have a white 360 controller icon when I switch to game mode.

Anyone else think the Needler is a completely unnecessary, unbalanced, unworkable weapon that needs to be expunged from the Halo 3 universe as soon as possible?
I dont know wheter to cry, laugh, or just hate.

Samsungs are nice too. Esp. recent 1080p LCDs. That's what I am watching TV on right now.

It's a good time to buy a TV and it's only getting better.

Thanks guys, I'll keep an eye on those. I think the 720p 42" set is the one I'll end up with (much larger is not practical for my gaming room or budget).

Edit: Gah! The smallest set costs $2,700. Midyear bonus is going to be $700-900. I've had my eye on this 32" LCD for $600 at Costco.... :(

I suggest checking out Westinghouse HDTV's Ghaleon, I have the 32w3 and it has worked amazingly good. the only draw back that I've encountered so far is the TV was made for HDMI imo; meaning that when you play your 360 over component cables it looks good but when you make the jump to HDMI you just can't go back to component since it looks like ass when compared with HDMI. (even with everything calibrated right)

the price of the TV is really good too, I was able to get it for $620.99 + tax. here's a link to the TV if you're interested: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824234001&ATT=24-234-001&CMP=OTC-C173T

also here's a link to their site so you can check out all the models they offer: http://www.westinghousedigital.com/

I've been pretty stalwart about my HD trigger point. I've been telling my wife for just over three years now that when a 32" set goes on sale for $600, that's when I'll buy. That just happened a few months ago (as far as I can tell). Were I single, I'd have that set you suggested. As it is, the two kids, house and wife mean I'm probably going to end up with a 32" or 36" LDC (unless a plasma gets down to ~$700 by August). 'Tis the price to pay, but I think I'll see a big enough jump from my 18 year-old 27" Mitsubishi that I'll still be happy. I mean, I literally heard someone scream on Live when I told him what I was playing Halo 3 on. We're talking abject horror. It can only get better from there. :lol

At least, I hope so.

My complete stats finished uploading. I knew I liked melee and grenades, but I didn't realize the proportion of my kills they took up - well over half. Wow. Now if I could just learn to shoot straight I'll be in good shape!

Edit: Thanks, Thermite I'll add those to the models i'm keeping tabs on.

No, it's a perfect way to turn the tide if a team has certain power weapons. The PP is what needs erased.

Serious question: In what situations would I actually want to equip Halo 3's plasma pistol?

I just seems so useless compared to the rest of the weapons and even the power drainer...

In the beta, it's one of the fastest ways to kill a VIP or stop a Hog rampage.

VIP

That aside, I think the problem (it's not really a problem) is that the reset of the weapons are powerful enough that using the PP is not really an advantage. A well placed grenade can strip a shield just as fast as an overcharged PP shot, and most weapons can drop them pretty fast from close to mid range as well. It is handy for disabling ground vehicles as they drive past you, and I'm sure it will come in very handy in campaign. But its place in MP is limited right now. Honestly, I'm fine with that. I don't use it and don't miss it.

<3 the new Needler, though.

Edit: dammit, Stinkles!

I have this TV, but the 32" version.

How good Halo 3 campaign looks on it? It is only 720p, and less than a year old, but if I have to switch I will.
I have seen you guys playing in similar TV's during the vidocs, thats why I asked the question.
edit: better link.

I wish the Needler were redesigned as a rifle. It looks so weak for such a powerful weapon. But at least I get to get it every time since everyone shrugs it off as a lame weapon.

QFT. I also had this idea, but then I realized that it would require too much change in the backstory so that it doesnt conflict with the books. But yeah. In future Halo games it would be awesome to needler as big as a rifle. It would just own.

I don't think it needs erased, but spawning one team on Snowbound VIP with PP, sniper, and carbines is a bit unbalanced, imo. I know the other side has Spartan laser and energy drainer, but I think everyone would choose sniper base given a choice.

Laser is a hell of alot more useful in VIP than the Sniper...the snipe is pretty much worthless in VIP on HG/SB. Laser+melee=dead VIP...

A request:

Let us leave feedback on players that quit. Right now you cannot select a person that quit in the scoreboard, I want to leave them "Quit Early" feedback.

And please do something about the people who just stand in place the entire match. They are even worse then quitters IMO.

We don't do feedback, that's Xbox Live. We have other plans for quitters and the like. However, do remember, that sometimes a quitter has something more vital to do than play a game. Screaming baby, date shows up and so on. it's not always bad sportsmanship.

What I mean is that the game itself won't let me send feedback easily on those people. When you highlight a quitter on the in-game scoreboard (the one you see with the back button) you can not click on his name to bring up his gamercard like you can with other people currently in the game.

How about make it so if someone is standing still the whole match they don't gain any RP if their team wins? Or better yet they could lose one RP point for doing that. They should not get credit for doing crap like that, it's taking advantage of the system.

And I know it's not always bad sportsmanship, but most of the time it is. Majority of quitters either do it at the start of the match or when they start losing. I leave those people quit early feedback only (so it lets me avoid them) which I think is fair.

While I fully understand a person who may have something else to do other then play halo 3, I believe they should still be penalized for quitting.

An ideal situation would be to have a system of sorts, if a person has something important to do they tell the people in the room, the people in the room are then given an option to leave him 'bad feedback' that only applies to the ranked match system (not his rep in general). If a person gets insert whatever bad feedback applied via halo 3, they are locked out of ranked. Kind of like moderated ban system, the difference is that people only get to vote in the event we get totally ****ed by some dude leaving.

I'm a pretty understanding guy, even if im gonna get bitch slapped for it if someone at least explains why they are leaving I don't get pissed, but it certainly is annoying to be left 4 on 1 or worse.. 6 on 1.

I play ranked when I have the time to play for real of course, my amount of dropping from ranked would be very limited to something very random.

I think the planets must have aligned or something last night, I had a game where quitting teammates worked in our favour. It was 5v2, the 2 being myself and a creature that I believe is called a female, neutral assault on Valhalla. We managed to detonate the bomb twice from 2-0 down without any voice communication but sadly the got the last point in the last 5 seconds of sudden death.

That's another thing, the amount of people that don't use a headset is baffling.

started replaying halo 1. did the first two levels on legendary, and then bumped it down to heroic for truth and reconciliation when i remembered what a FUGGIN PAIN IN THE ASS that level was. it's still great, halo -- fighting an elite almost feels like fighting another player sometimes. well, maybe not when you sit around sniping their blue asses. which i've had to do a lot of. silent cartographer next. hee hee

I don't think a banning system based on personal feelings or on how poorly a team handled the imbalance in player numbers would really work well. Were that the case, if I left to change a diaper while playing with badasses, nothing would happen. But if I committed the same act in the company of poor players or whiny 12 year olds waiting on their chocolate milk from their lying mothers, I would be penalized for having a life.

The system can tell when a person has left a game early and should be allowed to administer an objective penalty, independent of anonymous internet bitchiness.

P.S. Can we get an updated list of banned call signs? I found out on day one that A55 is forbidden. And I heard something about N64...

Great three-page interview with Shane Kim about Halo 3 on gamespy. I'm still reading it, but this jumped out:

GameSpy: You mentioned that Bungie is working with Peter Jackson on the Halo interactive series. Is this the same team that is currently working on Halo 3?

Shane Kim: I'm not sure about the specifics. They'll be done with Halo 3 this year, but we haven't announced any dates on the Halo 3 series.

GameSpy: So there's another project in the works for Bungie to begin once Halo 3 is over?

Shane Kim: Oh yeah. Bungie has their plans well mapped out. You have to, when you have a studio like that, and you need to know what you're moving your people on to. So they have the collaboration with Peter Jackson on the animated series.
Whoops.

I dunno if I'd go that far, a banning system for quitting early sounds kind of harsh.

But the way I see it, if you don't think you can finish a match (most of which are ~10 minutes) then don't bother joining one in the first place - at least don't do team matches (especially ranked ones). Play rumble pit instead or something, since you've got no teammates in that mode (free for all) no one will care that you quit.

Here's something I haven't seen answered anywhere (and forgive me if I do not have time to rifle through 300+ pages for the answer), but what happens to the beta downloaded on my harddrive when the beta ends? I downloaded it through Crackdown. Will it automatically delete (like a self-destruct), or do I need to go in and search for my Crackdown downloads and delete them? I'm kind of ignorant about my 360 harddrive, my time with it is so limited (mostly because my wife treats the 360 like another woman and suspects my true feelings for the Xbox)...

As for quitting teammates: If you are so worried about teammates quitting, why don't you a) don't go into ranked matchmaking without enough people to form a complete team and b) I'm not sure what b was going to be. I know that sometimes, your party gets split onto two different teams, but is that because the match is unranked? If so, there is no b.

I picked up a 32" Sammy LCD for just over that. You have to kinds wait out retailers and buy when they only have a few of last year's models left. You won't get the latest and greatest, but you'll get a good entry set for much cheaper than the standard pricing. I paid about half of retail.

Or how about the quitters stay out of team games in matchmaking so people are not forced to do something that silly? You can't expect someone to always have a full party of 8 friends ready to join them whenever they want to play.

This is not even about rank, I play mostly the unranked playlists and it's still annoying as hell when people quit. It's not fun to stare at the black screen while it finds a new host (and half that times disconnects everyone from the game instead). And it's certainly not fun to be on the team with half the players and having the other team spawn kill you, or trying to defend your flag when its 2 vs 6, etc.

Ugh. I'm done trying to hit 50. I played 15 Rumble Pit games over the course of last night and this morning.

My worst finish in those 15 games was 3rd. I finished 2nd or 1st ten times. Somehow my 48 didn't budge.

(And I won three out of the four preceding Rumble Pit games I played.)

Heads up guys, today's update is going to be stacked with single player goodness. I can just feel it. Or it might not. It could be a really small thing with some boring data about how many players vetoed this or that map, or how many more kills were tallied with the BR as opposed to the Carbine, or how many VIP's were unshielded with the PP. Or it could contain a brilliantly crafted Lukems Vidoc focusing on the graphical touches going into single player, or some Marty magic, or thirty minutes of that spiffy green wireframe hawtness from campaign. But probably not. One thing that's pretty certain is that there will be no mention of my pooping propensity. I've been scheduling my dookie drops with my blackberry to avoid any potential ingame turd rendering to avoid any further embarrassment.

Speaking of Single Player,

I had a dream about the Drinol Beast last night. When it came out, it was just a big T-Rex. I was pretty disappointed.

So I am not the only one who dreams about SP? I feel better now.

The only thing that makes a good update is the amount of Stinkles wit. He can write about the most mundane and insignificant shit and still make it a good read...I may be exaggerating a bit.
I believe Urk that this update will bring along some kind of megaton on SP (my wee had a strange color this morning) cause I can't remember the last time the Urk wasn't right on something he may have said on something that might or might not have been Halo related.

I think Luke's done a good job with his writing in the past few updates; his stuff blends right in with Frankie's. (The past three Humpday writeup have been hilarious.)

I promised Disgruntled Gamer I wouldn't post this week's Update. If there's a podcast in it.....betrayalton.

I was only able to play till the 22nd. Thanks to Stinkles I got 5-6 more days of playtime and they were the best too (cause of low amount of douchebags), otherwise it would have left a bitter taste if I only was able to play it for 6 or 7 days.

My schedule is usually pretty busy on Friday, but today there's nothing for me to do but grieve about the Cavs Game 1 and wait for the update/ 1UPY. I WILL win.

BTW, I've played about 150 games or so. I try not to look at my stats too much, because I've been letting "others" play the beta, and I'm very unhappy with my K/D Ratio.

I've played 291 games, but a handful were customs.

K/D ratio has hit 1.92 and that's with screwing around in customs and suiciding a lot.
