The Halo 3 Beta Thread

GhaleonEB said:
Normally I'd agree, but I'll need some lead time because the first 20 pages are going to be additional gamertags. If I don't space it out a bit, those tags will get buried by post-relase impressions and hype and they'll never be added to the list. I'll be able to build onto the lists I started in this thread and that will help. Once this thread hit launch day, I couldn't keep up and add them. There are a couple hundred in the sixteen thousand or so posts that followed that were missed. So it may be a little early - two weeks or so - but I think it's important for a game that will have so many online users. A lot of people made new friends from that listing.

1 week, that's plenty of time. You and I both know it's not gonna be full of people just posting their gamer tags. If you want to create a halo 3 gamer tag thread you're more than welcome.

I might do that. I spent a good six hours - probably more - just doing nothing but sorting through posts for tags. That is why I started this thread ten days before the Beta started. As for it not being full of people posting gamertags....have you looked at the first, oh, ten pages of this thread? :p

It'd be much easier to sort if it was a thread just for posting gamertags instead of all of that mixed with discussion.

Just beat Halo 2 Campaign. Holy shit :lol I knew it was bad, but there's absolutely no way to describe that blue balling. I mean, I freaking 100% knew and was anticipating it and it still felt terrible. Also Tartarus fell like a little bitch. I was expecting some epic ass battle with Keyes and Johnson pinging away in the background, and while that did happen a bit he only lasted through two shields? The hell is that, I was expecting a five minute battle and it took less than one. I'm going to play this on a higher difficulty as soon as possible.

But holy shit I take back everything I ever said about the flood. High Charity made a believer out of me. I finally realized the entire point of the flood, it's to ****ing run away. I think I spent that entire level with those creepy ass Spore Bombs constantly a couple feet behind me. And the flashlight segment, holy shit that was creepy. Also I think I found a headshot type area or something in the middle of their bodies that finally let me make it through that first segment with the Carbine. Very fun bad guys now, especially the awesome shotgun and sword wielding crazies.

And the Arbiter is so goddamn cool. Love the VA, and the character itself is just total badass. That final encounter with the 6-7 Brutes before Tarty is so ****ing sweet, ducking and weaving all over the place, cloaking and assassinating a Brute and getting the **** away. I even stickied one on the leg and the poor guy just sat there trying to rip it off before going boom. That's probably my favorite encounter in the game. The end of Uprising isn't far behind though, with all those damn Brutes and the Ghosts that come charging after you. Hell, all of Uprising is awesome, easily my favorite level. Finally a vehicle section that does more than mock the poor Ghost. I had wanted a good Ghost race since I freakin started the campaign, and zooming through the riverbed ignoring gunfire, doing your damnedest trying not to crash your baby is everything I could hope for. Arbiter's levels ****ing trounce the Chiefs, it ain't funny.

I'm all over this place with this post, but goddamn the second half of this game is disgustingly awesome. I don't even want to think about the first couple of missions. Everything from Delta Halo on is ****ing gold. This game turned out *much* better than I had expected. Hell, it even turned out much better than I had thought halfway through.

So the message dissapeared, it gets to step 2 of Matchmaking and then tells me I failed to load the map or I don't have the map, wtf? -_-

If you happen to read this Frankie, is Bungie looking into this or what?

I can't load the maps up for customs either even though the maps are on my list...this sucks.
I had the same problem. I just redownloaded the new maps. And everything works.

You are filling me with nostalgia (which is odd because the game is less than 3 years old). The very first time I got to the Tartarus boss fight he somehow jumped/fell off the platform right at the start, then the final cutscene kicked in. I just sat their stunned trying to figure out what happened. It never happened again.

Again, check the first pages. Everything went as smooth as round polygons; a couple of pages of gamertag posting and then a great discussion after that with almost no gamertag posts. It worked surprisingly good for this thread, I don't see why it would be any different for the retail thread...

I've redownloaded the maps twice, and it still doesn't work...and I've looked around and there are alot of people havin the same problem with no fix to speak of.

It wasn't just gamertag posts. We don't need official threads being made super long in advance, just make a thread for for gamertags.

Yay! Another Halo 2 campaign believer. I really dislike the last boss, but hot damn the vehicle battles running up to him are great. The spot on the Flood you describe is the Flood Spore (little crawling guy) imbedded in their chest. If you destry that, the host dies. Not sure if you ever noticed, but the other spores will crawl into the cavity that leaves and re-animate the corpse if you don't destroy it first.

And yes, the Arbiter is a badass. His first two levels are among my favorite in the game. What did you think of fighting with Hunters and Elites by your side at the end?

And yeah, the ending is a gut-punch. It doesn't so much end as it stops. (I hope you watched through to the end of the credits.)

Hey, no argument here. If you don't mind, I'll start up the gamertag only thread two weeks ahead of release, organize those, and then the official thread one week before release with the GT listing included. I'd *much* rather go that route than plow through a mixture. I can start the GT thread with the 200 I have so far so there are no duplicates. Thanks for the suggestion. (And I never suggested starting it super long in advance - we're talking one week ahead or two. I'm in total agreement about mega-threads made in advance.)

Completely agreed about High Charity, I didn't realize how awesome that level was till I replayed it, that is a flood level done right.

But overall I'd say that I like the MC's levels better, because while I hate Arbiter's first few missions (Heretics + Flood levels), I think all of MC's levels are pretty good except for that first one on High Charity (which is still better than said Arbiter missions).

Agreed. Tartarus is my absolute least favorite part of the game, though the Banshee part right before is pretty awesome.

Ramirez said:
No boss fights in 3 please.
I don't mind boss fights as long as they are done right. See: Scarab battle. When a boss changes the rules of the game and becomes pattern based - Heretic Leader, Tartarus, Prophet fight - then they both suck and ruin the sense of immersion in the game. Halo 2 got one out of four boss fights right. I hope they emulate the first one more than the latter three.

But then, the latter three are all characters, and it's hard to make character bosses really interesting without cheating. Since Halo 3 will likely have many, as Halo 2 did, it's one of the few real concerns I have about the game.

Ramirez said:

This man contains infinite wisdom. You should listen to him, Bungie (I know you're reading this Frankie/Luke). :)

The Scarab was fine though that doesn't really count as a boss fight.

Oh yes, I got familiar with that little ability quite fast. Never connected the idea to a weak spot though.

And yes, the Arbiter is a badass. His first two levels are among my favorite in the game. What did you think of fighting with Hunters and Elites by your side at the end?

Yea, I mispoke I think saying the game gets better on Delta Halo, Arbiter's first two levels were quite fun too, although I think the first went on too long and I'm not the hugest Banshee fan. Chasing down the heretic and running from the flood were quite awesome though. The Hunters were hilarious, just chilling as the brutes rained down death. The dual wielding elite though took the cake.

The best AI partner moment has to be taking on the two hunters in Gravemind though. If any of your marines make it through that, they get ****ing bonded to you. Towards the end of that level I even ran right in front of a couple cloaked sword elites so the one guy that made it wouldn't die.

But overall I'd say that I like the MC's levels better, because while I hate Arbiter's first few missions (Heretics + Flood levels), I think all of MC's levels are pretty good except for that first one on High Charity (which is still better than said Arbiter missions).

I wasn't a fan of the first level or most of what took palce on Earth. That goddamn slow moving Scorpion has more than worn out it's welcome. I hope the vehicle sections are kept in check for 3. Ghosts and Hogs primarily please.

Also I didn't mind the boss fights. They were way too easy on normal though. I remember cloaking as soon as the heretic fight started, locking on to one of the images with the sword, and randomly getting the right one. Entire fight took like ten seconds. Prophet wasn't anything special either. Guess I should have seen the Tartarus flake coming, but hey.

Okay so the boss fights kind of suck. I think out of those three the prophet is easily the best because of all the interference his gaurds run. Get rid of the quasi-QTE to damage him, make it a normal shield, give him some heavy damage up close so you have to stay near his gaurds and you probably have a good fight.

If the Heretic's level actually had you chasing him down trying to get in your shots as you run from the flood it would have been alot better. "Showdown" type fights are really lame though.

I like boss fights, but I hate, as mentioned, pattern bosses. It would have been much more interesting to have tartarus and his elite guard in an area, and just go at it. That seems video game realistic to me. I liked the scarab and the dude that spit out holograms or whatever of himself. The others were pretty crappy though.

Give bosses special weapons or sheilds or something, but figuring out the pattern just sucks the life out of the game.

I liked the scorpion sequence, but a couple times I just went out on foot which made it interesting.

Son of Godzilla said:

You aren't alone there. I usually would just ditch the scorpion when confronted by it (take a hog, ghost, or wraith instead), I just don't find it that fun to use. I guess its just too slow and easy to use for my taste.

After playing Halo CE on PC for like 20 times, I just started playing HALO 2 Vista. From time to time, I try to use an Xbox 360 controller instead of keyboard and mouse because I -have- to get comfortable with controller. Way too many good games are coming for Xbox 360 that I do not want to miss (Assassin Creed, Halo3, Bioshock, Alan Wake,..). Even though some of these games do come on PC as well, I don't want to buy tow copies (my son plays xbox version and games look a lot better on a 46 inch 1080P LCD).

Using a controller instead of mouse and kbd is very frustrating. I keep overshooting the target when I try to aim. But it is now or never. If any of you guys have ever been in my situation and have any tips beyond "just practice", please let me know. The problem is not that I don’t believe practice is the only way to learn how to handle controller, but how to make practicing enjoyable.

edit:
needless to say, due to sucking at controller, I already missed on Halo 3 internal and public beta :(

I liked that there were no boss fights in Halo. Pattern based boss fights in FPS always feel so unnatural, even more so in Halo. Loved the scarab 'boss' fight, it was amazing.

You're probably going to have to delete all your Halo 2 game saves from your 360. You're probably using a different xbox then the one you originally downloaded the maps on. Evey time I tried to play Halo 2 on my brother's 360 I would have to delete all my Halo 2 saves and start over.

I wouldn't mind some Large enemy that must be taken down but like you guys said, he isn't in any patter. A huge epic battle with tons of stuff going on, then you see this huge beast that takes longer to kill but it isn't the ol' : Wait for him to swing, you shoot his shoulder, wait for him to spin and drop a bomb, duck, shoot his shoulder again...... AHHHH!!

But if Bungie wanted to throw in Level Bosses then go right ahead. I have a new-found respect for them. I wasn't a huge fan of all the equipment and heavy weapon class additions to Halo 3 BEFORE I played it. But once I got my hands on the game and played it for almost 4 weeks I realized just how much they know what they are doing. I welcome any additions that they feel will fit into the Haloverse.

I was playing Shadowrun yesterday and hearing people talk about how bad the Halo 3 Beta looked.

Shadowrun looks like crap!
Would it have killed them to toss in a ladder animation!

The months-old Ba-Ba-Ba Beta looks better than that game.

uhhh.

I miss you already Beta.

Im a massive halo fan but dont fight troll with troll,
don't forget halo 1 and 2 didnt have ladder animation(for good reason)

Edit: I did not write this post.

So...why did Bungie bother modeling a face for inside the Spartan helmet? You can't ever see it through the visor, right? Seems like waste to render it...

How do you know it? Did you see the final game? Don't forget that the beta didn't show us every game feature. The final multiplayer could feature a transparent or breakable visor, or maybe metroid-like face reflections on the visor.

Halo 1 and 2 were "Last Generation." That kind of behavior can be expected from said Generation. But will not be tolerated these days, especially with the amount of beast games coming out this year. Details people... Details

Its about gameplay not console power sticking someone to a ladder animation could limit movemet to the point were anyone using a ladder would be a sitting duck.

Gameplay is most important.

But with the power of current generation systems, they have the power to provide QUICK animations that do not slow down gameplay.

Hopping in a warthog or a ghost in Halo has a very realistic animation. Does it take a half of a second, yes. That is the risk you take when getting in a vehicle that could give you 5-10 kills.

If Shadowrun developers were concerned with slowing down the game, then they could have tossed in a jump animation that jumps you to the top of the ladder or something, I mean anything! not just the same old walking animation, but now you are walking and floating in the air. Come on now.

Seconded. Also; Halo has no decent cover system whatsoever. Rainbow Six, GRAW and Gears had no problem doing it; get with the program, BUNGIE.

edit; oh and when you pick up ammo, ever noticed how you just run over it and it magically gets transported into your gun? Totally lame. How about a decent pickup animation, BUNGIE.
