The Halo 3 Beta Thread

i absolutely hated how they reused the lines from the halo 2 e3 2003 demo like during the regret cutscene before outskirts.

But the worst was the redone line: "When i asked for reinforcements, I didn't think they'd send a spartan". Everytime I hear it, I cringe.

i liked that hey were there, just like i LOVED the "reused" announcement trailer cutscene, but yeah, the redone acting couldnt hold a candle to the old stuff. strange.

well it wasn't badly done in the cutscene, but that reinforcements one was just soooo out of place - probably the worst piece of recorded audio in both halo games

see, i thought it was done badly. that line in particular, but also of note was the redone lines by the sniper team (i forget the exact wording) in the opening cutscene

"Grid Kilo 2 3 is hot, recommend mission abort" "Roger Recon" "It's your call, Sarge" "We're going in. Get tactical, marines!"

btw those lines afaik weren't re-recorded. Just reused.

Not that I disagree with you, but at least get your facts straight. The leaked Quake source code WAS the Linux version done by Dave Taylor.
You're correct. Its been awhile (1996) so you must forgive me. I had forgotten the details. However, I'm still sure the fact that Greg Alexander sent his work to ID and did not get any legal ramifications is true, which was the main point I was trying to get across.

If I remember correctly, Dave's port was not that great and did not have much excitement around it. Greg's port was a lot better and had a lot more excitement surrounding it. It was probably this that made me misremember Greg's port was the first port to Linux. However, I might be wrong about this since I'm going back to when I was really young (roughly 14).

That is impressive. What's interesting is that Crackdown alone has sold about a million copies, and with the other ways to get in, that means a couple hundred thousand people had access to the Beta, but didn't play. They must have bought Crackdown for....Crackdown.

Weirdos. :p
Yeah, not everyone has gold.
Little more than half has their 360 hooked to the internet. About half of that have gold...I think.

Groundbreaking “Halo 3” Multiplayer Beta Concludes; Official Countdown for Launch of Game Begins

People worldwide can gear up for the game’s launch Sept. 25 with new, limited edition “Halo 3”-themed Xbox 360 Wireless Controllers and an Xbox 360 Wireless Headset.

REDMOND, Wash. — June 13, 2007 — The countdown has begun for the biggest entertainment event of 2007 with the close of Bungie Studios’ massively successful “Halo® 3” multiplayer beta. A first for the acclaimed “Halo” franchise, the limited public beta was an overwhelming success, seeing more than 820,000 unique participants and more than 12 million hours of online gameplay in its short test period, equivalent to more than 1,400 years of continuous play by one person.

Now that the beta has closed, consumers worldwide can gear up for the game’s release with a variety of new merchandise, including two new Xbox 360™ Limited Edition “Halo 3” Wireless Controllers designed by Spawn and McFarlane Toys creator Todd McFarlane, as well as an Xbox 360 Limited Edition “Halo 3” Wireless Headset, which lets gamers talk with friends over Xbox LIVE®. The controllers and headset will be available starting in early September and can be preordered at select retailers today, allowing “Halo” fans everywhere to prepare for the launch of this year’s biggest game.

“The participation in the ‘Halo 3’ beta was staggering,” said Shane Kim, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios. “Witnessing such a great reaction to a small portion of the game has been inspiring. It’s a testament to the fervor and anticipation that surrounds ‘Halo 3.’ We’re confident that on Sept. 25 Halo 3 will drive an unprecedented wave of new gamers to the Xbox 360 platform and Xbox LIVE.”

The “Halo 3” beta, an early look at parts of the multiplayer gameplay of “Halo 3,” debuted to Xbox 360 owners worldwide via Xbox LIVE on May 16. The more than 820,000 users who played the beta resulted in more than 350 terabytes of data downloaded from Xbox LIVE, equivalent to more than 82 million digital music downloads from the Internet.* Also telling was the players’ response to an exciting new saved-film feature, which provided them with the unprecedented ability to record their games and share them over Xbox LIVE with friends for the first time on Xbox 360. The feature, which was unveiled in the beta, saw more than 580,000 saved films created by users, representing more than 2.7 terabytes of data. Because of the tremendous participation in the beta, Bungie now has an exhaustive amount of data that will be used to improve the overall game experience.

Fans looking to immerse themselves in the “Halo” universe before the game’s epic launch this September will be able to dive into “Halo” through a variety of new merchandise and accessories:

· Xbox 360 Limited Edition “Halo 3” Wireless Controllers. Two new Xbox 360 Limited Edition Halo 3 Wireless Controllers will be available starting Sept. 18 and can be preordered today at select retailers. Each controller will be packaged with a limited edition “Halo 3” collectible figurine created by McFarlane Toys will sell for an estimated retail price $59.99 (U.S.).

· Xbox 360 Limited Edition “Halo 3” Wireless Headset. The trade paperback will cost $12.95 (U.S.).

· Marvel Comic miniseries. Bungie Studios has teamed up with Marvel Comics to release the monthly miniseries “Halo: Uprising.” The four-issue miniseries, featuring original storylines and artwork from the Eisner Award-winning team of superscribe Brian Michael Bendis and artist extraordinaire Alex Maleev, will launch with issue one on July 25, 2007 and cost $3.99 (U.S.) per issue.

The Hog section before you enter the tunnels was alot better than what was in the demo. Tunnels weren't that bad themselves.

The beach part? Yeah, that was very cool, and probably one of the best parts of the Earth levels. My problem with the tunnels was that it was a very boring environment, and Killing the Shadows was just an exercise. It would have been nice to have had more Ghosts or something attacking, or more battles going on around you. I dunno. Maybe it's the way I play that section. I almost always wind up taking a Ghost by my lonesome and killing everything before the marines in the Warthog have a chance to get stuck and die somewhere (which is also why I virtually never gun in the back of the Warthog in that section).

The last time I did that sequence, I had myself in a ghost and two fully loaded warthogs running escort - in formation. It rawked.

Ironically, all that whole level, except maybe the scarab boarding, is one if not my favourite of halo 2 sp.

I enjoy the tunnels section a lot, letting the marines drive even if they make mistakes. I love the tank ride through the bridge and the close encounters in the narrow streets of new mombasa, the beach part, and the end against the wraiths, just before the scarab, that reuses parts of the e3 demo.

For me, the announcement teaser trailer reuse is the most dissapointing change and i´m not talking about the graphics and all that tech aspect but about the atmosphere that it still gives me goosebumps when i watch it. So awesome hearing all that troops dialog in the background, the tension, the odds of the battle that reminded me of "Fall of Reach"...all that was lost i think with the "i like crazy" comment of Cortana and the bomb thingy. The "pretty good for a brick" joke by Johnson on the other hand is excellent.

Anyway, in terms of cinematics, i think halo 2 still looks amazing and i love the way some of the cutscenes are directed so i have even more expectations for halo 3 sp, given that they have had more time for taking care of it and seems like its gonna have more drama and epic feeling being the closing chapter of the trilogy. In halo 2 i love the last bits of dialog shared between cortana and chief with the "dont make a girl a promise you know you cant keep" (or soemthing like that)

Master Chief has yet to take off his helmet in any of the Halo games, although Bungie teases us about it every now and again. The speculation about what is under that helmet has reached a fever pitch as someone has created a video from the recently finished beta that forces a clipping error and thus gives us a peek at a rendered face. Someone else used the video and manipulated the image to give us the following picture of the face model. So is this what Master Chief looks like?
PIC

I estimate this will become someone's avatar withing 3 min.

I'm so tired of this "MASTAR CHIF'S FACE!!!" bullshit. I don't want to hear about it. That's not even his face. People who post that should have each of their limbs tied to a wild horse, then the horses should be allowed to run free in different directions, ripping the limbs off in a horrific, painful way.

I'm trying to go cold-turkey on campaign spoilers - I successfully stayed away from all of the supposed campaign stuff in the beta hex code - so shit like this just annoys me.

What sold me on the elites in the Halo Wars trailer was the beginning and how that Elite picked up that marine and makes this animal-like low growl, so scary. I love the noble and animal aspects of the elites. Guess that's why I liked the arbiter section too, cause you were among the elites and I find them very intruiging, I love them. (especially that cutscene when you're going to that station)
Agreed. I loved that. It reminded me of the creatures from Alien vs. Predator. :)

I'm not trying to completely avoid campaign spoilers, but stuff like this pisses me off. That's not his face, it shouldn't be posted.

Also, you need to start being more harsh. You just use sarcasm or nicely explain why you don't want to see that stuff. You should be slammingf the guy and proposing violent deaths for him. But if you steal on of my violent deaths, may you fall off a bridge and be suspended in mid-air by a nail hanging off the bridge that is drove hard into your eye socket.

It takes effort to stay civil here. Sometimes I question if it's worth it. :lol

Trust me, it isn't. I tried it once, thinking of fun ways for people to die is way more fun and educational. Use you imagination! Being polite doesn't take any imagination, other than pretending that the person you're being polite to isn't a total idiot.

Guys, it's been more than a year since they did the Halo 3 E3 trailer. Soon after that IGN did a pretty neat 14minute documentary on that trailer, explaining some of the references, basically tying it into the Halo/Bungie mythology. It has nice, laid back vibe and good production (pictures, etc)

Halo 3: Beyond the Trailer (June 2, 2006): http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/734/734817/vids_9.html

I watched it back then, but maybe some of you haven't.

ARE YOU ****ING SERIOUS? Do you REALLY care this much about a GAME? Stop typing and stab yourself with your keyboard because you fail at life.

How does one stab himself with a keyboard? Is your keyboard sharp? Does it have metal spikes? What about laptop users like myself? Do we "stab" ourselves with the screen, or what?

Thanks for reminding about that video. I loved it when I first watched. As you say, it is really well put together and does a nice treatment of the Halo universe.

I know this has been posted in the game music video thread, but I think it'll reach a more suited audience here.

It's the Halo 1/2 theme and Finish the Fight theme at Video Games Live at Yale. This will send chills down every Halo fan's spine. it's "OMGWTFMARTYISTHENEWJESUSAMAZING"

LOVE the crowd reactions. I've heard the Halo theme so many times and I just can not get tired of it.

I was the show after that one in Columbus Ohio. Being in the audience is completely different than the YouTube videos. I had chills. Everyone stood during the Halo 3 bit cheering. When the ark activated on the screen, the lights (light Blue) passed up in unison with the video. Really made you feel like the ark was activating right in front of you. If VGL is anywhere close, you should check it out.

I would so go there. But I've looked at their schedule and they don't come to Belgium. Closest is Paris, UK or Germany. Paris is at least a 3-4 hour drive so I don't think I can do that.
I know experiencing it live is so much more amazing. Every year I go to Night of The Proms (10, 000 people live concert with mix of classical and contemporary music) and it's just so much better being there.

That video reminded me of when the Halo 3 announcement trailer unexpectedly went live around this time last year, what an awesome moment that was.

That's because Columbus, Ohio is the best place ever. I'm sure if it was in Ann Arbor, Michigan the concert would have sucked.
