The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Maybe it's the equipment they were using, or the crappy headphones I'm using at the moment, or a combination of the two--but I can hardly understand anything that's being said in that video.

Is there a transcript somewhere?
I understood Bakken, just not the guy from GamePro.

also what happened to neat little rectilinear hills that fit into corners etc. Halo 3's insistence on actual rings meant the Hill locations were fewer and less interesting.

I really enjoyed the hard-to-see hill. It gave you a feeling of claustrophobia.
Not being able to see out of what you're defending is a good thing?

Anyway, I complained about that during the Beta and Stinkles said it would be changed (added transparency?) in the final.

It requires teamwork. When I played with my normal group, one person was in the hill and the rest took positions across the map. The guy in the hill would eventually die, but we'd take a couple out. The way it is in Halo 2 isn't bad, but I just preferred it the way it was. I liked the person feeling helpless in the hill, despite being killed by a hill taker plenty of times.

They also need to take grenades out of KotH. It de-evolves into nothing but a frag fest.

I just wish I could have played a KotH match during the beta. That was the one variant I never got to play. =(

I can say I totally disagree about taking grenades out of a hill match. If you've got a situation where three or 4 guys from the other team are holed up in the hill, the only way you can effectively take them on is with a little help from explosives, especially if they've got most of the power weapons.

edit: That said (about the grenades), I can see a potential compromise in regards to hill control with player traits though.

Nah, it sucked. More so because they person in the hill couldn't see anything, while the people outside could plainly see where you are from long distance. Were it actually done that way to "promote teamwork" they wouldn't be changing it. Besides, it's also had the same problem in Slayer matches... so where's the teamwork there?

It can, yes. But you don't need to stay in the hill constantly. So if you could actually see out of the thing in the Beta, you would've been able to dodge said grenades, kill the charger with a mid/long distance weapon and go back in.

As for the idea of taking out a weapon stable. Nope.

I, admittedly, was hardly ever in the hill. But when I was in there, I could somewhat see the people. I even sniped a couple who were charging me. Perhaps they could have lightened it a bit. I don't think they've officially said they're lightening the band up. They just said they've made changes to it. I don't really care either way whether they change the band or not. I just thought that it was a new challenge. You have me on the Rumble Pit though.

And the problem with grenades is you kill their entire team, like happens a lot. You take the hill. They all respawn and just chuck grenades. You have nowhere to go and you die. Imagine eight grenades flying at you all at once. That's what will happen on Halo 3. Either take off starting grenades and have grenades on the map or have two grenades starting with no grenades on the map.

I played KotH Tactics on Halo 2 last night. It's supposed to be just that, tactics. The BR starts were useless. Everybody gets in the hill to get more time, 8-10 grenades come flying in from everybody, you can move, but you'll die.

No point making a thread for this so..:p

I just finished beating Halo 2, and is it just me or was it a lot shorter than Halo? I thought i was like 1/2 - 3/4 of the way through the game and i was actually on the final boss :lol Though i didn't think the boss or the ending itself were too bad tbh, like i've often seen many people describe.

Overall it was decent but it had a fair few average and/or poor levels, such as Quarantine Zone (i think?), the level with all the pits of green fog, lots of flood and sentinels and various covenant vehicles everywhere. That level just wasn't any fun at all, I hated pretty much everything about it :p

I definately enjoyed playing Halo far more overall, pretty much everything in it just seems better than in 2, other than the graphics (how nice was the arbiters armor?) and the much improved cutscenes. I'm glad i played through it though to catch up on the story etc and prepare me for Halo 3, no idea what i'll play in the meantime now though, these are the only games i've had to play since the beta ended!

Hurry up September :D

For the love of God, please just don't shrink it down to the size of Halo 2 hills. I loathed that mode due to grenade spam taking you out in your little 1CM sized hill.

besides, really good teams leave one guy in the hill.. and perch a sniper overlooking it, and have the other two start shit across the map. Usually the hill is the loneliest spot on the map.

I wish I still had this Ogre1 video on lockout, but it was basically a how-to play king of the hill.

I'd rather have 1 cm hills then the "omg i can't see shit" hills that were in the halo 3 beta

your anger towards it is simply because the levels in which the hill you played on... Foundation, warlock, midship, desolation and lockout. These were all round and had usually open site from end to end... a very prominent center section, nice places to ricochet your human nades off of

I'd say i'd be more hopeful to see more maps with limited visibility distance, and no human grenades during koth. That would allow no nade ricochets/bounces. you'd have to be pretty damn precise.

Imagine foundation or warlock with spike nades only

But in Tactics, you get more time for more people in the hill.

And yea, I think KOTH is a mode that should be played with no grenades or 1 grenade spawn.

1 Grenade start seems fine.

That's what I liked about Halo 3's 2 grenades-per addition. In Halo 2, too many times players will use grenades as their primary weapon rather than firing their gun. Afterwards, a teabag and some trash talk come by after a mindlessly throwing 4+ grenades.
