Beauty and the Beast confirmed for October 5

The Protector announced for April 5 (although given most recent martial arts flicks on Blu-ray, I'm not expecting a great transfer)

Fox and MGM have officially announced a Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western Trilogy for Blu-ray release in the U.K. on 6/7, including A Fistful of Dollars, the previously released The Good, The Bad and the Ugly and For a Few Dollars More. In fact, it's available for pre-order now on Amazon.co.uk. We've contacted Fox here in the States for word about a U.S. release and they haven't responded yet, but we'll keep on them to find out.

Holy crap, Target had the 5-disc Blade Runner Blu-ray for $13. Was tempted to pick up the Kingdom of Heaven DC Blu-ray for $15, but having not seen it, I saved the cash.

Speaking of repackages, HBO is rereleasing Band of Brothers this summer with a Pacific sampler.

Yes plz, finally.

Sold my old set for $100. Grabbing this for $150 less my $30 gift card will be sweet. Somehow, the $50 will feel worth it for The Plan and actual real packaging. :lol

Well except for the cover art, that kind of sucks. They should have just used the art from the DVD.

yes, I agree

Absolutely. I don't know what Paramount was thinking with some of their new Blu-ray covers. Groundhog Day, Collateral, and Minority Report are the worst.

The Man With No Name Trilogy coming June 1

It would have been a lot cheaper just to use the trade in program to get the new packaging for your old set and buy The Plan separately. Universal started a trade in program for Canadians to get the new box.

Picked up The Monster Squad for $8 and The Mist for $15 at Walmart yesterday. Monster Squad's PQ was outstanding considering its age.

The UK steelbook is much nicer
because it's a Fox release over here

Although it does look like Tom Cruise's name is bigger than the actual movie's title...

Aren't they keeping the same transfer to The Good, The Bad and The Ugly?

Whether these will appear in America is anyones guess. But the White cover with the Alien Queen's mouth on it looks fantastic.

I had no idea Minority Report was being released. Is this another one Spielberg personally oversaw?

edit: And now I see Saving Private Ryan and War of The Worlds are also getting a release. So what was with the drought and now deluge of Spielberg?

It was the same with DVD, it was a real slow trickle at first.

Wow so the quadrilogy is confirmed for Bluray? The last I heard, Aliens would look horrible so it wasn't gonna happen. This news pleases me :)

I was surprised to see a box from Universal today. They managed to ship the new packaging for the BSG series to coincide with launch day today. I honestly expected to be waiting forever to get the new packaging.

I have the custom covers Marty Chinn gave me and they are awesome, but I was pleasantly surprised with the rereleased packaging. It's pretty nice actually. Now I'm torn on whether to stay with the custom covers or use the new packaging.

I'm not sure if Universal is still honoring the replacement deal for those of us with the monstrosity that was the original packaging, but if you can still get in on it.. it's worth it for sure.

Man, I've been putting this off for a while, so I just sent them an email now; hopefully, I can still get the upgrade. If anyone else wants to know how, instructions are here:

On another note, I still can't believe there's no way to get Face the Enemy on Blu-ray or DVD. How the frak can they call it the complete series set if they haven't included that crucial portion of the final season? Ridiculous.

Metropolis is coming this November. From Digital Bits:

In other news, those of you who can't wait for more information on the theatrical and home video release of the new restoration of Fritz Lang's Metropolis will be pleased to know that Kino's new website for the release will go live on 4/15. The film makes its U.S. theatrical debut at the TCM Festival in Hollywood on 4/25. The DVD and Blu-ray release is currently planned for November. Check this story at AICN for a little more today, and be sure to check out the official website on 4/15 for LOTS more.

I'm new to Blu-Ray and I just want to confirm that as long as I buy a release of the same region as myself (Region B, I'm in Australia) I will be fine as far as compatibility goes? I'm wanting to order a few blu-rays off of thehut.com and am nervous about doing so.

Well, yeah. Generally speaking, region free BDs are much more common than region free DVDs, too. But always check first, obviously.

I'd rather buy Alien and Aliens separately. Unless they both came together.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment is currently running a Facebook poll asking fans to choose which of several catalog titles they want to see the studio release on Blu-ray. When you vote, you get a $5 coupon off Universal BD titles. Among the titles listed: Back to the Future, Backdraft, The Big Lebowski, The Blues Brothers, The Breakfast Club, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Lost in Translation, Meet the Parents, National Lampoon's Animal House and Psycho.
Poll here
Best case scenario is that Universal has all these titles prepped and is holding this poll for which comes out first, with the rest following before the end of the year. At least that's what I'm hoping.

More like the one with the most votes will get held until the Fall shopping season and the rest will be released in reverse order of popularity amirite?

I have a question about region locked blu-ray disc. I'm in the States so any blu-ray disc encoded with a region A region code will be playable on my PS3 right? I'm looking at some chinese movies on PlayAsia so I just want to make sure before I buy.

Why would it look horrible?

Because it was SUPER grainy when it came out in 1987 or whenever. Cameron commented on it during the commentary on the Aliens DVD I think. He said that year (or whatever) film that was typically used in movies was very grainy, and it kinda added to the war style of the movie.

I think people fear the BD will a) look really grainy and might be very ugly or b) the try to remove the grain and make the movie look unnatural and.. well shit.

Hopefully they'll do a good job with it! :)

I'd say the task is in competent hands:

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=4339

Additionally, according to the print edition of the UK movie magazine Empire, this release is being produced by Charles De Lauzirika, who is behind the BD releases of most of the movies directed by Sir Ridley Scott, including the monumental five-disc Blade Runner. De Lauzirika said that, while the Quadrilogy DVD was already very comprehensive, this Anthology Blu-ray set will blow it out of the water, with new extras and commentaries. Also, a new sound mix has been done for the extended edition of Alien 3, which involved bringing back some of the cast to reloop their dialogue.

Yeah, you'll be fine. Region B is region B, and Australia is PAL so any SD or 50Hz features will work fine - that's often an issue for Americans who are importing discs from PAL territories, because even if it's not region-coded the PS3 and some standalones can't handle that stuff.

I'm pretty sure that Aliens was shot in Super 35, which can look grainy next to anamorphic stuff. There are plenty of Super 35 films on BD that haven't suffered, though.

I wish people would get over the misconception that Blu-ray must equal a flawless, glossy picture, though, because it feeds into the idea that only great-looking films are worthy of a release and, when a film that perhaps looks grainy or dirty does come out, it gets slathered in DNR to make it look like a brand new blockbuster. The purpose of HD is to get closer to the director's original intention by adding detail and eliminating problems like compression artifacts and artificial 'enhancements' that typify DVD transfers, not to make everything look shiny and new.

Watched Fellowship of the Ring last night.

It's not a super crisp transfer in certain areas of the movie, this is true. However, honestly, it looks a lot better than I remember from seeing it in the theater. I remember seeing it in the theater thinking the DVD was gonna be ugly because of how soft certain sections of the movie was. :lol

It looks far better than anywhere else I've seen Fellowship, and the sound was spectacular. As somebody who liked watching the extra content in the EEs once, with not a lot of desire to regularly re-watch 4+ hour flicks, the theatricals are good for me.

I can't wait for Beauty and the Beast. That was one of my favorite films back in the day.

I wish Disney would bring their movies out a little bit quicker as I don't want to still be buying their Blu-ray's if another platform comes out before.

Absolutely. I hope its grainy to fuck, I hate it when they mess with films to "clean them up". Fuck them up, more like :/
