The HD Movie thread

Blade Runner really is the best high-def release of the year. The extras are just so well done and there's so many of them.

I'm pretty much set for an old school western weekend. I have the Searchers and Blazin Saddles (both HD DVD) in my car.

And whoever it was that recommended oldboy made me sad. Not only was it a sub par PQ, but I felt dirty after watching that film. :(

:lol :lol

My girlfriend HATES the ending.

Flash Point: Great PQ really vibrant.

Awesome movie.

Harry Potter box set: the movies and PQ get better with each installment. The 1st movie looks HORRRIBLE tho.

I picked up The Simpsons yesterday, and I am not impressed with the disc. It's so barebones. Couldn't they have put the writers favorite episodes on there or something?

WHY oh WHY is Monday a federal holiday now??? I have Broken Flowers, the Kingdom (HD DVD), and Paprika (Blu Ray) on they way.........for Monday. :(

I saw half of Blazin Saddles last night. Easily one of the most offensive films I've ever seen. Looked great, too, for being such an old title. I don't even want to think of how hideous the dvd would've looked on my 56" DLP.

Rented Coppola's Dracula on Blu Ray recently. Picture is not so great, audio is standard fare. Commentary by Coppola is interesting though. High definition does NOT improve Keanu's performance.

Van, had you not seen Blazing Saddles before?

I don't think of it as offensive, since it's actively working to obliterate the stereotypes it portrays. But I guess it would rankle modern sesnsibilities.

It's one of my favorite movies ever, and one of my first HD purchases (one I would rebuy even owning on DVD).

That said, I don't know that it really gains much from HD. I justified the rebuy due to the unaired pilot, which was terrrrrrrrrible.

Nope, had never seen it before. I'll finish it up tonight, then I have the Searchers for this weekend, which I'm looking forward to. Never seen that one either. It's pretty awesome that my first experience with these films is pretty much their best presentation ever, since I know these films have never looked/sounded better.

Enjoy, and in the words of Gabby Johnson:

"Dngnbt, th vrmninsz n hppnge!"

Also, the guy who plays one of the prominent townsfolk is the Big Lebowski.

Gabby Johnson is right- they're hitting stereotypes with a sledgehammer, and you either love Blazing Saddles, or you hate it.

I could not have said it more eloquently.

I can't wait for Bonnie and Clyde. One of my all-time favorites, and that looks like a class HD package Warner is putting together.

Van, Rio Bravo is pretty nice in HD, too, and it's a fun movie.

Some of the deleted scenes are so bad they're funny. Dracula on the Demeter being my favorite.

Okay, so my Blade Runner Blu-ray Ultimate Edition ships from the US on the 17th. It arrives in Australia on the 18th. It gets through customs clearance and arrives at a depot about ten minutes drive from my workplace in Melbourne on the 19th. At midday, it gets shipped out to Sydney for god knows what reason. Gets back to the original depot on the 20th, and has been "In Transit" for the last 24 hours.

Why does god hate me?

What the hell happened at the end of Blazin Saddles? WTF? Did Mel Brooks and his writers forget to write an ending? :lol

On the first page I piped up a question about Mission Impossibles on Blu-Ray. Either no one has it or no one cared enough to reply so I'll throw it out again. And yes, I've read a review or two, I'm just asking for some personal GAF taste, otherwise I wouldn't be here.

Anyone have it and care to comment? I'm mainly interested in 1 and 3.

I love the ending of Blazing Saddles. Especially when they duck into the theater.

Hedley laMar: "Student"

Can anyone with a capture card get me a nice screenie from Ratatouille. Its that scene where Linguini gives Remy the red and white checkered cloth full of cheese and grapes then Remy unfolds it and sits on his back against the wall.
Would be much appreciated.

Watched Live Free or Die Hard last night and Spiderman 3 tonight. Spiderman 3 still sucks, but both are top notch for PQ and AQ. Live Free or Die Hard is still awesome, fuck the haters, definitely better than 2.

I have part 3 on HD DVD. Don't know if that would help, but if so, just let me know what specifically you'd like to know. In terms of picture quality, it's pretty much a reference disk. And the audio, even on my DTS setup, is fantastic. There are some scenes, like the vatican one, that are used by enthusiasts to test the capabilities of new players, so that should give you an idea of how great the PQ is. The bridge scene looks great, also. Special feature wise, there's a pip commentary with cruise and the director, but that may be HD DVD only. There's a whole separate disc also just for special features, which I haven't even gone through yet. There are plenty of dark scenes, but they look sharp and not grainy.

Again, let me know if you need to know anything specific.

are you kidding? BS has one of the most classic endings of all time! It is SUPPOSED to be a non-sequitor to the entire movie. From the start of the movie, you should have been saying to yourself "That would have never happened in the old west", right from the beginning with the good ol' n***er work song. It progressed more and more (paddle balls, wheel chairs, cardboard replica town in a night, etc) until finally at the end when the entire movie just "falls apart". YET, despite it seemingly falling apart, it still saw resolution, everyone still stayed in character, and the heroes rode off into the sunset.. sort of.

Watch it again.. Funny that was your first thought on the ending.. I have always thought that it was truly one of the greatest endings ever devised in cinema. An artistic way of saying "fuck it" while still holding your movie together and providing a completely satisfying ending.

I love that ending, but nevert thought of it that way before. Cool!
like you said with Headley saying "Student". Completely has NOTHING to do with the movie, yet is totally in character for him.

I guess I never thought that I was overthinking the ending.. That's how I always saw it. I mean the movie is entirely ridiculous up to that point, but just before it became ludicrous (pun intended) it always seemed to reign itself back in. The ending is just the point where the movie stops even trying to take itself seriously and just let's loose.

Well, I say "the movie" but obviously I mean Brooks.

The "student" line cracked me up. And when you say that it "stopped taking itself seriously" is where I was going when I said the writers just didn't bother with a proper ending.

no, because the chase was still going on, headley got caught, and bart and waco kid rode off into the sunset... sort of. total ending proper!

All of this is testament to the greatness of the movie.

Oh, while the unaired pilot *is* really bad, are there a lot of good extras (also on the old DVD) that are worth it.

Here's my wishlist for movies that I would like to see in HD (hey it's Christmas)

Love Actually
Batman and Batman Returns
13th Warrior
****stone
Equilibrium
Fist of Legend
Something About Mary
Austin Powers Trilogy

Sounds great, this movie has been on my short list for awhile. It's an all-time classic but I was worried that the HD transfer wouldn't be worth it. I don't have it on DVD so it sounds like in addition to a great movie I've got a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff to look forward to as well.

Aaaaaand I've wrapped up my Harry Potter viewing for what I hope is quite some time. Order of the Phoenix is naturally the most impressive of the five, getting a 5-star rating from me. No real flaws at all. In particular, the early scene with Harry at the park on the swing set was stunning, true demo material. I haven't seen anything pop like that out of my screen in a while.

My next hi-def title will be Pan's Labyrinth on the 26th. I can't believe I've held out seeing the film for over a year waiting for an HD release! Hope it's worth it. :D

Apparently the Kingdom is out early just about everywhere. Netflix shipped my copy yesterday. But unfortunately, PO's closed on Monday. :(

I'll have to wait until Wednesday for it.

I picked up Blade Runner and Star Dust today, both in HD-DVD so I'll let people know how they are after I watch them.

how was Stardust? I keep reading good things but haven't seen it. I snagged Blade Runner today too. I can't wait!

Where's a good place to get Blu-Ray movies cheap? I'm finally getting a new TV to go with my PS3, and now all I need is some movies.

Blade Runner Blu-Ray arrived this morning. Luckily there were no sneaky HD-DVDs hidden inside :D Which is great coz I imported it.

Only watched the Final Cut so far, and it's of course great. The PQ wasn't perfect like some reviews said, but it was damn good. Gorgeous looking. There wasn't too much difference between it and the Director's Cut from what I remember. Some extra scenes, some extended, some scenes were the "unrated" versions so they had blood, the dubbing in one scene was fixed etc

One of my favorite movies of all time, so I'm happy it's finally out! :) I just need Lost now :(

Got my first few Blu-Rays yesterday and today to go with my new (and first) HDTV (40 inch 1080p Samsung). I bought Planet Earth, 300, The Simpsons Movie, and Superbad. Can't wait to watch them, Planet Earth specifically. 480i --->1080p should be incredible.

Just finished the Searchers. Fantastic movie, and looks great for something shot in 1956. Sound didn't fare as well. John Wayne does a great job. The dead (but breathing) indian goof was hilarious.

My friend found and bought Blade Runner 5 disc (HD DVD) in Tennessee and brought it down with him (he doesn't even own an HD DVD player). I'm watching it now for the first time. Outstanding PQ and fun movie. I can't believe I've never seen this before.

I just watched Independence Day (UK version) and it's a stunner. Very, very, impressive audio and video throughout the whole film

And Blazing Saddles....

I envy you, watching these awesome movies for the same time. Or is that pity you for missing them this long? In either case, enjoy!

Just watched Pan's Labyrinth BR.. I'm pretty sure this movie has the best PQ i've seen in HD yet. Fucking stunning. SO GLAD I waited over a year to watch this one.

they finally shipped it? I thought it'd been delayed.

Isn't this fox though? therefore stupidly region coded even though its an ancient release?

I have a region A player but its sometimes nice to pick up the UK exclusive releases (like face/off, the rock, con air etc)
