The HD Movie thread

one thing i was thinking about today.........

how do they get the stars of movies to do 'making of's and commentary tracks? is it just of their own goodwill toward the project, or is it part of the contract of the movie? are most commentary tracks voluntary?

I have a question that really bugs me, but didn't want to open a new thread for it.

Many of you say that you're plugging your transferring imgae thorugh the HDMI outpot of your receiver. I understand how it works (Blu Ray HDMI => Reciever HDMI => TV HDMI), but what bothers me is the benefits of this act. Why not plugging the Blu Ray HDMI directly to the TV's one, and skip the reciever. What's the diffrence?

We're moving tomorrow, and I just unplugged my reciever and wonderd about it, although it's unrelevant to me (S-Video reciever but only SCART TV...).

If you skip the receiver then you won't be able to utilize HDMI audio. From Toslink to HDMI for audio is a greater improvement then from Component to HDMI for video.

Okay, let me alter my question a bit:

Switch HDMI with S-Video or Componnent (Since my reciever has those and they don't transmit sound).

Well, that allows your receiver to act like a switch. You can plug in multiple s-video devices as well as component devices and only need one input of each on your tv.

I popped in my Batman Begins DVD today to hype myself up for The Dark Knight, and I hadn't realized how much watching Blu-Ray movies has spoiled normal movies for me. Damn, I felt like I was in the past or something. Glad I'll be owning Dark Knight on BD:D

I'm assuming this is for music listening and not related to high def media? Or can you somehow finagle that into a multi-channel setup?

Its for SACD/DVD-A, CDs, vinyl, radio etc. You could do a 2.1 system with it since it has a sub out. But I'll only be doing 2ch on it.

Help! I just got an Onkyo 605 yesterday and I'm wondering if there's a way I can have my ps3 hooked up to it through HDMI for audio, but also have my ps3 hooked up directly to my TV's HDMI port for video.(the onkyo adds some discoloration to my image when displaying hdmi video) Is this what splitters are for? Or is it switchers?

Your 605 should do the video switching itself, without any other switches.
Your 605 should NOT be making any discoloration with the picture. I imagine if you havent changed any settings that this is a defect you need to call Onkyo about.

I have 2 ps3's set up through two 705's which then go to TV's and there is no discoloration or artifacts at all.

well yeah, but would a splitter do what I'm talking about?

I've seen all of them, and they all look very good. The better question is where you picked them up, since I've been trying to pick up Ultimatum for less than $18 and have been unsuccessful.

I will, but it's color banding so I'm asking just in case they can't do anything.

Ask on the 605 thread on AVS. Your receiver should not touching the the video as it passes it through. There might be really cryptic setting you need to enable/disable.

Nice, thanks.

Online. Someone was selling some HD-DVDs and he had Identity, Utlimatum used in perfect condition for 5$ each which is a steal. He also had 300 brand-new for 5$. A steal I tells ya!

If you get it on a 2 for 1 deal sure but definetly not worth full price on both. The mist was pretty good but 1408 was almost as bad as dreamcatcher going by other steven king movies.

I saw both in theaters and loved both.

I have never seen any of the films so can i watch this as a standalone and not be confused?

Will they release the other movies as standalone titles eventually?

Is dirty harry a good movie?

Dirty Harry is amazing movie. And the sequels are standalone stories so you won't be confused.

There is no info about rest of the movies but I think it's safe to believe they will be on blu someday ;).

Im also Canadian, and I see lots of cheap DVDs/BDs being sold too, but it still strikes me as odd to buy something just because it was cheap, and not because you want it.

EDIT: saw your edit, lol. Fair enough.

Are there any sites out there that keep track of Blu-Ray movie prices and sales? Sort of like Cheap-Ass Gamer, but for Blu-Ray movies. I see that CAG actually has a Movie section, but it's flooded with tons of other stuff. Anything any of you guys know of? I'd like to keep track and slowly build my Blu-Ray collection by picking things up when they're priced well.

On September 2, Warner Home Video will release a pair of Clint Eastwood catalog action flicks, The Gauntlet (1977) and Every Which Way But Loose (1978), along with Steven Seagal and Katherine Heigl in Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995), the virus thriller Outbreak (1995) and Arnold Schwarzenegger's tangle with crocodiles in Eraser (1996) on Blu-ray.

Really? Really? A lot of people clamoring for these, were they? It's like WB is turning into Universal with these random shitbag catalog titles.

The Gaunlet is pretty awesome though.

it's a shame that they are putting out new dvds of Hitchcock's movies and Touch of Evil without Blu-Ray discs though.

OMG OMG OMG. this is one of my favorite movies ever, I cannot fucking wait now. i shouldn't have even seen that it's coming so I could have been surprised. now I have to wait. Shit.

It also replaces one of the worst DVD video transfers from a major studio. I can't wait to be rid of that POS.

Are they remastering it? Or are we going to get another POS like Gangs of New York?
