The HD Movie thread

Dark Heart was particularly disappointing, given that it's written by Ellis. I suppose it ties into the end of the New Frontier movie, though. I can also see why Task Force X is chosen... the Rick Flagg angle. Not sure why To a Distant Shore-- I don't remember it all that well. Unless it's just to show Wonder Woman is a badass.

Does anyone know of a decent site where I can download HD Movie Trailers? I know about the Apple site but you have to pay for some crappy Quicktime software to download it.

I found one site called themovieinsider.com but a lot of the trailers are Quicktime movies and I just found out PS3 doesn't support them. :(

HDNet's "Nothing But Trailers" show is awesome. 30 mins of (mostly new) high def trailers. They even had a 2nd Nothing But Trailers "Animation Edition" this week.
I love that channel.

Shitty about TWBB. I have been looking forward to that in HD for a long time. Guess I can continue looking forward to it....

wasn't there supposed to be an announcement on March 4? I am pretty sure we will see those canceled Paramount movies announced for BD.

Embargo ends after the 4th. Supposedly announcements coming on the 5th.

I really need to check their website and set my DVR in advance :(

yeah ditto.. if someone could post HD movies on HD channels to watch for in this thread that would be great.

I have Lawrence of Arabia and Liberty Vallance on my DVR from HDnet movies.

Now I don't know what to do. Get the DVD release and double dip once the BD version arrives, or wait.

I think I'll double dip.

There's always the chance that it will be available to rent on Xbox Live Marketplace.

As someone who's never touched the comics but has enjoyed the animated shows such as JLU, how is this new JL animated feature in comparison, in terms of production values screen adaptation and so forth? It sounds great based on comments so far, just looking for one more nudge to go out and buy. Thanks.

I didn't like it but I almost hate all those What if?/Alternate universe stuff. This is an alternate take on the creation of the Justice League.

I thought it was awesome. Although the superman bit at the end was hella rushed.

Not anymore, no.

And seriously, figuring out to download QuickTime movies without QT Pro is super easy. A minute or two browsing the source code, and you've got the direct URL to the file.

The production quality is about the same level as the best of the animated shows, perhaps a bit better with reard to lighting and coloring. The story is very satisfying along the lines of JLU.

As pointed out, it's not the same continuity. It's closer to the feel and continuity of the original 60's comics, though.

New Frontier is *full* of square-jawed men who Do Good, and if that sounds good to you, go for it. The voice acting is also very good.

rumor, I guess:
A lot of people worked hard for over a month creating some amazing extra features for the HD release of "Cloverfield." At first it looked like not many consumers would see these features, as the release was planned for HD-DVD like Paramount's other recent titles. But now that Toshiba's HD-DVD format is dead, Paramount is scrambling to release "Cloverfield" on Blu-ray - on the original HD-DVD street date. As a result, the current belief is that there's not enough time to program all the extra features (including lots of new story stuff, along the lines of the viral campaign's backstory) in time for the Blu-ray release, and all this great work will be scrapped. That would suck! So I'm hoping that if you and others help spread the word, maybe the fans could make enough noise to convince Paramount Home Entertainment's marketing division to postpone the Blu-ray release by a few weeks so the disc can include all the extra materials. Demand it!

Thank you!

yeah. make sure you don't let anyone else make the same mistake.

worst thing about the invasion is you can see the good film inside it that it was before the studio waved in the wachowski bros to rape it until it died.

Yeah, that stuff doesn't bother me. Intrigued by the Cold War/Communist angle, actually. Saw a bit of it at FYE just now, looked good to me so I think I'll pick it up. Thanks guys.

Been picking up a lot of movies due to the great deals:

The Departed ($10)
Black Snake Moan ($10)
Coming to America ($10)
The Untouchables ($10)
Planet Earth ($29!)

I could see my HD DVD collection going into the hundreds in a few years.

I also picked up another A3 at Costco for $79 before 02/28/08.. which included Bourne Identity and 300 (will probably give em to my brother-in-law). Unfortunately, I own both lol, but it also still qualifies for the five free from Toshiba (hopefully they will still honor the rebate).
Where?!?!

DCX

You have to go through an affiliate link to get though... unfortunately I don't have the link any longer.

On other deal news, Fry's Electronics has a number movies for $9.99, including:
Top Gun, Coming to America, Trading Places, Tomb Raider, Sleepy Hollow, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Payback, When We Were Solders, Anchorman, etc.

They also have Face Off and Transformers for 16.99, both of which are pretty good deals.

Discovery Channel online store, US version aka Alien Planet Earth Remix edition...
Some others have called Discovery Channel, and were told that they were shipping the BBC version if the order was HD, and the Discovery Channel version if it was plain DVD. My order shipped on Tuesday, so I guess I'll know soon enough.

I wasn't sure if they were responsible for ruining it, or making it (barely) watchable. Any details on what they were responsible for? I thought the mood stuff, the middle act or trying to be normal, and the tension were all OK, but the beginning and end were awful awful awful.

BOTTOM LINE:

Hopefully, I haven't oversold the film but it is definitely my favorite from 2007 and this high-definition DVD transfer has more than exceeded my expectations. It looks and sounds fabulous - I look forward to showcasing this film repeatedly in viewings for friends and relatives in my home theatre. This DVD is highly recommended for those who still find themselves in the HD-DVD camp. I suspect a Blu-ray will have the exact same encode but your guess is as good as mine as to when that will surface.

Just ordered 30 Days of Night based on the opinions in here, not seen it yet.

Just got 2001 : Space Odyssey in the post too :D

Didn't see this posted yet but here's an advance Gattaca review.

Looks like a winner.

Wow, I ordered stuff from Deep Discount on February 15 (in the morning) and the stuff still hasn't arrived yet, FUCK. I live in Canada, but it should have arrived by now. Probably backlog at the border, stupid Canadian laws.

5 movies too, I've been waiting forever.

did u get the free shipping ? mine usually takes forever when i do

Interesting that no one bothered to post the weekly sales figures, since an HD-DVD is sitting in the top spot. :)

1. American Gangster (HD DVD); INDEX: 100
2. Michael Clayton (Blu-ray); INDEX: 62.24
3. The Rock (Blu-ray); INDEX: 27.26
4. Cars (Blu-ray); INDEX: 26.18
5. We Own the Night (Blu-ray); INDEX: 24.29
6. Planet Earth (Blu-ray); INDEX: 22.69
7. Con Air (Blu-ray); INDEX: 21.37
8. Gone Baby Gone (Blu-ray); INDEX: 19.89
9. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (Blu-ray); INDEX: 19.26
10. Crimson Tide (Blu-ray); INDEX: 18.28

Beowulf has a pretty good shot at being number one next week, even though it's an awful movie.

I don't think there was an option. Shipping was $6. I would have gotten the stuff from Amazon.com already, but the shipping is more. If I don't get it next week then I'm never ordering from them again. I expect it tuesday/wednesday.

That would be because this is not a versus thread and as of now people have gone out of their way to keep format war out of it, though it seems some people just can not get it out of their systems :lol

I will also add since it is out there, that blu won by well over 70% (shocking!!)

I just finished watching Gone Baby Gone for the first time. In short, this should have been the movie to take Michael Clayton's place as a nomination for Best Picture.

What a fantastic film - last year was phenomenal for drama, and this only further serves that point. An ending that really, truly does make you question the fine line between right and wrong.

Even though they really don't share many similarities, I enjoyed this far more than Mystic River, which I didn't expect to since I'm not a big Ben Affleck fan.

I bought tekkonkinkreet on blu ray last week but I realized that it's just not my type of movie. I stopped the Blu Ray after a the first hour because it became more and more weird -.-.

I ordered 4 movies on Feb. 17th and just received 2 of them this week. It takes a while but at the price they are selling it on top of the cheap shipping rate for Canadians (when you order multiple items), I'm not too complaining.

I was strongly considering getting this on BD when I made that big order from deep discount but for some reason I decided not to. I think I'll get it next time I order online. Awesome movie, I'm quickly becoming a big fan of Casey Affleck.

Seriously, after seeing this, I think I might rent Jesse James now, whereas I previously had no interest in it. (Not a big fan Brad Pitt.)
