Wut, peoples till buy HD-DVDs, isn't that format dead....

:)

Maybe someone should tell Paramount...

Anyway I preordered I Am Legend, though I will be waiting longer for the HD-DVD because WB is a bunch of fuckin' morons.

What the hell are you talking about?

New Line Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Guillermo Del Toro produced film 'The Orphanage' to Blu-ray on April 22nd, day-and-date with the DVD release. No specs have been announced for the title, but it will be presented in Spanish with English subtitles (similar to how 'Pan's Labyrinth', a film directed by Del Toro, was released). The only extras announced thus far will be behind the scenes featurettes.

I never had a chance to see this when it was out, any impressions?

Also National Treasure specs are out

On the announcement front, Buena Vista has just revealed that the National Treasure: Collector's Edition will street on Blu-ray Disc on 5/20 (SRP $34.99). The disc will include: "exclusive interactive bonus material including Mission History, a look inside the Declaration of Independence, with more than 70 minutes of new video content, along with never before seen audio commentary by Director Jon Turteltaub and Actor Justin Bartha. Additionally, hours of bonus features from the standard definition release are also included, allowing audiences to uncover deleted scenes, an alternate ending, behind-the-scenes making-of featurettes and more." Audio will be PCM 5.1. The film is obviously already available on DVD.

That same day, you'll also get National Treasure: Book of Secrets. There will be a single-disc DVD (SRP $29.99), as well as a 2-Disc Gold Collector's Edition DVD and Blu-ray Disc (both $34.99 each). DVD extras will include audio commentary with director Jon Turteltaub and actor Jon Voight, deleted scenes, The Treasure Reel bloopers and outtakes, 8 featurettes (Secrets of a Sequel, The Book of Secrets: On Location, Street Stunts: Creating the London Chase, Inside the Library of Congress, Underground Action, Cover Story: Crafting the Presidents’ Book, Evolution of a Golden City and Knights of the Golden Circle) and Easter eggs. The Blu-ray will include all that and add the Book of History: The Fact and Fiction of NT2 trivia game, as well as two more deleted scenes.

There's a store in Montreal where they put WB HD DVD titles on shelves day and date with the DVD/BD version. Been able to score Michael Clayton (release date: March 11th) and they also had In the Valley of Elah and a few others.

I'll pick up I am Legend from them when they'll have it.

Got lately Rescue Dawn, Gone Baby Gone and 30 Days of Nights that I'll probably try to watch this week-end.

Interesting that no one bothered to post the weekly sales figures, since an HD-DVD is sitting in the top spot. :)

1. American Gangster (HD DVD); INDEX: 100
2. Michael Clayton (Blu-ray); INDEX: 62.24
3. The Rock (Blu-ray); INDEX: 27.26
4. Cars (Blu-ray); INDEX: 26.18
5. We Own the Night (Blu-ray); INDEX: 24.29
6. Planet Earth (Blu-ray); INDEX: 22.69
7. Con Air (Blu-ray); INDEX: 21.37
8. Gone Baby Gone (Blu-ray); INDEX: 19.89
9. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (Blu-ray); INDEX: 19.26
10. Crimson Tide (Blu-ray); INDEX: 18.28

Beowulf has a pretty good shot at being number one next week, even though it's an awful movie.

Nobody posted the numbers because this is the movie thread, not the format war thread. Make a new thread and call it "HD-DVD Takeover Watch" or something. :)

Didn't see it at the theater, so definitely look forward to the BD release.

Of all the studios to bitch about regarding their HD-DVD support...

I did not see it myself but I heard ALOT of good stuff about it. It's supposed to be a real good psychological horror movie that works without alot of in your face scare/gore effects.

These were already posted. For the record bluray still won by over 70%...

The numbers are 77:23. Let's not forget that a lot of people are now gobbling up the $10 HD DVDs that stores are putting out.

American Gangster was priced the same as the DVD version in many places to clear them out.

Regardless, the format war is over. No one cares about the numbers. Naturally, there will be a spike for HD DVD due to the prices of the movies at this point as owners stock up whatever they can.

I think you misunderstood my intent.

Exactly.

Is there any word on Indiana Jones hitting blu since the new one is coming out this year?

i'm so embarrassed to say i've never seen an Indy movie. I'll add that series to this list with Rocky and the godfather :'(

Even still, blu sold 3 TIMES AS MUCH AS HD. i'm calling that "hd-dvd in the top spot :)" as a joke post.

Well they are they reason ever other company jumped ship, and I'm sure all HD-DVD owners appreciate them delaying their titles for no reason at all...

Anyone know if Cowboy Bebop will ever come out on BD? Would the source material itself benefit from HD?

The only reason I ask is because it would be fucking amazing.

I'm waiting for this news as well. Bandai just re-released CB Remix in a single collection for $40 on DVD, and I'm really tempted. But I'll hold off if it's going to Blu-ray within the next year or so.

I bought that but only because it's my favourite anime.

This wasn't posted yet? odd.
And in announcement news today, Universal has just set the Get Smart feature film The Nude Bomb for release on DVD on 6/17 (SRP $19.98). No word yet on extras if any. Universal has also set a Xanadu: Magical Music Edition for release on 6/24 (SRP also $19.98). Extras will include the Going Back to Xanadu featurette and the film's theatrical trailer, along with the complete soundtrack on CD. The studio has also announced that it's lowering the SRP on all of its previous HD-DVD releases by about $10 to $15 each on 3/4, presumably to clear out inventory.
Is it Uni or Para that has the 3/4 date looming?

Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door (theatrical film) was recently released on Blu-ray in Japan. It's popped up as being released by Sony in the US and Europe in a few rumor threads in the past, so it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Appleseed review...

"The Blu-ray transfer adds a slightly more vivid picture and a brighter swath of colors, but the overall picture-quality is only marginally better than the film's standard release." :(

Still, the movie got a very good score, so I look forward to WB's late release of the HD-DVD version...

For the sequel, famed action movie and producer John Woo, saw the first movie and enjoyed it so much that he wanted to jump on and collaborate with Shinji Aramaki for the film's sequel, after Aramaki announcing that Appleseed would be a trilogy of CG-animated movies.
wat. that review is so poorly written it makes 3rd-graders cry.

Picked up five HD DVD's today.

Sleepy Hollow ($9.99)
Payback ($8.49)
Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow ($8.49)
We Were Soldiers ($8.49)
Face Off ($14.50)

Those that said Sleepy Hollow has a soft transfer are crazy, it looks great. There are a lot of scenes with extensive fog though, which look really really nice in HD. Maybe that's where the soft comments come from.

Because I'm recovering from my university finals, I had a movie day, and watched the Departed in HD... now that is one awesome film.

I'm not so sure about Face Off, is it worth a premium over the others?

Just watched Rescue Dawn BD.

Superb transfer. Just great.

As for the movie itself...what the hell happened? I don't know who to blame, the director or the actors, but the performances in the entire thing were just laughably terrible. I couldn't even get Bale's character.

It felt like the whole hostage and survival thing was a big joke to everyone as if they felt like they were trap in something like a bad reality TV show. Everyone had a big smile on their face for no apparent reason at some point (maybe it was the director's intent to try to make some scenes funny...it wasn't). The scenes with the midget were poorly directed. The whispering acting didn't make sense at all in most scenes.

Came out disappointed despite the high ratings for the movie. The film had so much potential.

Rescue Dawn is a rental at best. I think the problem is Steve Zahn is just goofy looking. He is kind of like Nickolas Cage he just makes any movie ridiculous.

I just saw grindhouse double feature on Starz HD. Rental. I was surprised that the Rodriguez film was better than Tarintinos. I thought they where going for over the top campy violence but Death Proof had less violence than any of his other movies! WTF. 1 hour of girls talking about nothing then a gruesome car crash. Another hour of chicks talking about nothing and a decent chase.

I didn't really like them adding all the scratches, missing frames and generally trying to mimic seeing the movie at the worst possible theater. Again though at least in Rodriguez case they seem to fit in the film better, Death Proof it seem like tarintino just said yeah, throw in some random dirt! just toss out some random frames! let me suck your toes unf unf!

I would love to see Fargo on BD. Shouldn't a release be plausible with the success of NCFOM? Judging by IMDB Sony should have the rights?

The Weinsteins bought the north American rights to the restored Suspiria and Mother of Tears. So its likely they've got Inferno too.

This means they'll come out on Blu-ray when Kill Bill/Grindhouse does. Which will be.......anyone's guess.

Yeah, Death Proof was pretty wack, but Planet Terror really surprised me, it managed to kick all kinds of all regardless of how corny it is. I think my friend described it best, it's the movie the RE movies should have been (and that is, entertaining).

Witht hat said, I've always wanted to see PT in HD, but I knew it wouldn't look all that great because of the style they filmed it in. It would be nice if when the HD versions come out they give you an option to remove all the dirt and scratches...

I've started buying DVD movies around 9 months ago, and already own around 15. I want to get more movies, but I'm probarly buying a PS3 in June\July (MGS4 bundle+birthday).
Since I don't have a HDTV, I'm not sure what to do with my buying habbits. I'm not sure when will we ever own one, beacuse it's not really worth it here in Israel, due to the lack of HD Content.

My dilemma is - should I start buying blu-ray movies (at a higher price) and watch them on a SD set, or continue buying DVD's at low prices that will satisfy me now, and will get upscaled in the future.

What do you think?

Go with regular DVDs if you don't plan on buying an HDTV anytime soon. By the time you get one all those BR movies are going to be cheaper anyway...

Do not buy either and rent until you save up for an hdtv.

what? do you want a cable or satellite company with a lot of channels? here in the states there isn't a whole lot of hd content that way. (personally i hardly watch hd from my comcast provider. i see better and more movies through netflix.)

upscaled dvd's(i must say, the way the look on my 50inch hdtv, i'll never watch them on one of my SD tubes again), hd movies, and ps3 games are enough to justify the purchase of a hdtv imo. that's what 90% of my usage is. i do watch tv series, but on dvd's.

i have two tube tv's in other rooms for SDTV. (you'd have one left over too it'd seem)

if that doesn't convince you to get a hdtv real soon, get dvd's.

It gets a lot more complaints about being noisy than it does about being soft.

BTW, I'm in San Francisco for a data conference. Any west coast HD movie gaffers here? Where would be a good spot to pick up some HD movies in San Francisco?

I'll be here 'till Saturday.

I didn't see your post 'til today.Hopefully someone pointed you to the Fry's Electronics store in Palo Alto and took advantage of the HD DVD $9.99 sale.

I forgot to mention one "tiny" thing. It's not really a question if I will buy a HDTV, but weather (sp I guess) my parents will. It's just that at the moment I'm quite dependent on them in matters like these since I live with them. I'm gonna be 20 years old this summer, and you can't really make a living while you're in the IDF (I'll be a citizen in 1 year and 10 months from now - so far away...).

So again, it's not really a question if I want or don't want a HDTV, since I'm not making the calls. The advice that I need is should I buy DVDs or blu-rays.

Right now, I'm buying more older titles than new one. I own movies such as Vendetta, Snatch, Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction and more.

Thank again!

i'd buy used dvd's and rent from netflix until i got a hdtv, then buy blu-ray. there's this place locally that has a huge selection, and sells dvd's as low as 3 u.s dollars. it's great for movies released before the last few years (they tend to be higher priced).

Aw shucks, too late. I left yesterday. I couldn't find anything in San Fran downtown other than Virgin for BD's, and got Rat for $28. Not good, but I wanted to buy SOMETHING. It was my first time in Cali, so I'm not sure I would've ventured too far anyway.

Can't wait to see Rat. I've heard so much good things from folks on here about the PQ.

Those that said Sleepy Hollow has a soft transfer are crazy, it looks great.
I'm sorry, but that movie lacks detail. A really sub par HD movie. When you get a chance to see other Tim Burton flicks like Ed Scissorhands and compare the level of detail, you'll understand.
