hey look guys, he's quoting deadmeat!
(I'd never do that. :lol)

I watched Appleseed last night. The PQ was pretty damn good. I was expecting the worst but was surprised. Banding and softness were evident but it was still a bold vibrant picture.

I suppose that makes some kind of sense, average joes tendency to stretch 4:3 content to widescreen fat head mode makes me think that this is not a feature most people want.

I stretch to fat more to avoid balck-bar burn-in on my projector. :(

Saw No Country for Old Men in the cinema last night (go UK!). Absolutely fantastic.
So i have just bought the blu-ray import, region free :)
Have heard excellent things about the PQ and AQ, so cant wait to see it again.

this was weird.

also: wth happened to neogaf? I spent the last 3 hours hitting F5 every fifteen minutes.
I just found this on AVS and, by extension, HDD. I should have water-marked it with GAF or something.

Why the hell hasn't Universal and Paramount announced any titles yet? I hope the Sweeny Todd rumor is true!

Screw Sweeny Todd, I want Children of Men and There Will be Blood!

Also I DVR'd The Life Aquatic on HDnet movies but for some reason it got all messed up. :( The PQ was quite stunning for what it did capture though. Where can I start an online petition to have Wes Anderson release his shit on bluray? :lol

All Targets have expanded their blu-ray selection, so if you are looking for a movie they might have it now. They've also reduced the hd-dvd section to 1 row...

Going to Wal-Mart today for No Country and Dan in Real Life, hopefully they take those coupons.

Godzilla was postponed? awe...I love the movie for Hank Azaria and Jean Reno. Kinda for Matthew Broderick.

Yeah. They expanded the Blu Ray section to hold 6 more movies, at least at mine.

Ah crap, missed that.

Hmm.... visual quality or extra stuff? What to do....

Yeh that's the delicious DVD Special Edition... god damn DVDs and their superior releases! Im thinking of picking it up and just shoving the Blu-ray in there.

If you're going to decide, you have to decide on the extra visual quality. This is one of the movies that was made for HD. Some of the scenes are just amazing.

I want to pickup Independence Day on Blu-Ray... it is one of my all-time, fun movies... I watch it to the end whenever it is on TV and I catch it...

"Disney announced that it sold 4 million movies and between 40 to 50 million videos on iTunes since 2006. That's huge, right? Not really. In fact, analysts expect those numbers to amount to just $123 million ($1.44 earned per video, $14.50 per movie); pennies in comparison to Disney's $35 billion in annual sales. In fact, it's roughly 10% of the $1 billion in digital revenue Disney hopes to achieve this year. A clear reminder, dear readers, of just how Type-A we really are. The typical Wal-mart noob still doesn't download their video and music -- hell, they can't even figure out Linux."

Anyone else sick and tired of these digital distribution articles? Ugh.

Side note: Is anyone familiar with the PQ on Close Encounters of the Third Kind? I want to watch it (buy it) but I'm not sure if it'll be worth the replacement from DVD. Opinions?

Well, here's another for you:

Apple (and Amazon) Unable To Find Movies For Its New Rental Service

Apple has been unable to make good on its January 15 promise to have 1,000 movies available for rent at its iTunes Store by the end of February. According to MacWorld magazine, Apple is currently offering only 351 titles for rent on the site. In fact, the magazine said, if all of the films listed for either purchase or rent are added together, Apple has only 770 available for downloading. By contrast Netflix has 6,000 titles available. Meanwhile, Amazon has indicated that it is getting few takers for movies being offered on its Unbox service. It is asking customers to complete a survey asking what improvements would induce them to increase their use of Unbox.

It's really good. Almost, up there with Blade Runner and 2001 when it comes to HD remasters of old releases. The disc also has a function that let scenes seamlessly branch so that you can see various versions of the movie.

Future Shop wouldn't take the coupon as it wouldn't scan in their computers, but it scanned just fine at Wal-Mart and they took it. It scans in as a "Vendor Coupon".

Future Shop was selling it for 2 bucks cheaper than Wal-mart though, so that's why i tried to use it there first. :lol

Unfortunately, Wal-Mart wouldn't match FS's price and give me the value of the coupon. Oh well, 10 bucks off was still a nice deal.

If DVD2.0 can do 960p upscaling thingamabob on a 1080p TV, I'm assuming it can do regular 720p...

...And if it can do regular 720p and work on existing DVD players, I'm gonna be really upset with Toshiba for trying to push HDdvd -- an entirely new format which required new hardware.

What's the max bitrate for DVDs/DVD players? 5mbit? Some of the wmvHD stuff is 5mb, and it looks as good as most HD I've ever seen... Plus sat/cable HD is probably broadcast at less than 5mbits, and it is much better than DVD quality.

I decided to try Best Buy again and got lucky. The cashier was a manager who was apparently enamored with my son and didn't pay enough attention to what she was doing and I ended up saving $26 dollars. BB is having a "buy these two movies and save $6" sale. well, I was buying those two movies so it took the $6 off. She then manually took $10 off both movie for the coupons since they weren't in the system still.

Can't wait to watch both of them.

what are you talking about? Regular upscaling DVD players do 1080p now. there is nothing in that spec that says its native 960p - it says via upscaling.

I honestly have no idea what they are thinking. At least Microsoft made an attempt at an interim solution with HD WMV on a standard DVD. If you think apple HD movies are good enough quality, then they'd fit on a DVD. All you need is an AVC decoder in your DVD player.

frankly its a non-issue. Bluray players are expensive now, but in 5 years time all the parts will be commodity items and that initial price premium will go away. and we'll have lovely, archive quality 1080p.

Look a few pages back...

Anyway I watched No Country For Old Men last night... was kinda fucked up when I first started watching it so I fell asleep and woke near the middle of the movie when they started shooting in the motel. Finished watching it later that night, the ending sucked, but the rest of the movie was pretty good. Tommy Lee Jones is useless in this movie BTW...

But more important, I just got my new computer from FedEx this morning, and just finished installing PowerDVD Ultra for my 360 HD add on. Can't wait until the prices of BR burners come down... :D

Too bad their sticker prices are as high as Best Buy's, with far less weekly discounting. Avoid.

Warner Home Video has revealed that they will release blockbuster film 'Batman Begins' for Blu-ray on July 8th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. No specs or extra features have been announced at this time, but we do know that the film will be offered either as a single disc release, or as part of a limited-edition box set.

Both the single disc and gift set editions will include an exclusive comic book prologue to the upcoming sequel 'The Dark Knight', which is set to hit theaters July 18th. The box set will also include a Batman Begins motion art lenticular, script pages, exclusive photos, storyboards, five collectible Batman Begins postcards, and $7.50 in movie cash toward a Dark Knight ticket.

Single Disc Version $28.99

Collector's Edition $49.99

I've not actually seen the movie yet :p but I think I'll blind buy the collector's item depending on it's full contents.

Collector's Edition $49.99 = MUST BUY FOR ME

Hey that's the same day the anime 'Batman: Gotham Knight" is supposed to come out. What a coincidence. :D
My wallet is doomed.
