Here is a response from one of the br.com mods, and I know that Penton will chime in soon also...

I think what some people are saying Van is that you (and others still) seem to have some incessant need to dig up and post every little negative thing towards blu that you can find no matter how little there is to back it up.
I do not know whether you guys have some macro that runs every morning that says "find negative+blu ray" or what but you are in capable of just enjoying the ride and the experience.
Every post about a movie or something is followed soon after by either bitching about prices or profiles or posting some blog that you found.
Just relax and let things happen as they happen.

Except that the bolded part is relevant to this format becoming more mainstream. I dont think its negativity but a legit concern.

Also: "penton man"......:lol

As far as "legit concern" that is well and good but not daily and not every few posts.
We get it, boo hoo price boo hiss profile wah wah.
Understood.
Let it fucking go, write a studio, write a congressman, write Oprah I couldn't care less.
Don't buy the movies, and then if the format dies you can say "told you so" but you know what?
Right now myself and others are a little ahead in the "I told you so" department and so far blu seems to be doing ok.
Penton is one of the most dead on of the "insiders" on any site, so not sure where the ha ha is coming from.

this headline - TG Daily: Blu-ray player prices hit 2008 highs as competition dwindles - is retarded since we're only 74 days into the year 2008 and even then barely 30 days past Toshiba throwing in the towel. So, uh, no?
I'd love to buy this movie but Fox didn't see fit to stock any of the local Best Buy stores with it. Nor ID4. Nor Ice Age. I have gift cards I want to use people! (And don't want to pay for shipping)

Posy holiday sales over? Check
New lower priced models not out yet? Check

This is pretty much the worst time of the year for CE in general.

I dunno, maybe there are folks who'd like more than just one player. Or a cheaper secondary player, or a cheaper player to buy as a gift. Or they want cheaper player so more folks can buy into the format and allow studios to pump out more BD content for us. Heck, for folks who spent all of last year whining about how the format war was stagnating growth and subsequently content, you guys sure as hell seem comfortable with the status quo, despite the fact that the format won't ever take off as long as the prices remain artificially high. Have BD sales exploded yet? If it were, Para and Uni would be in a bigger rush to flood the market with content.

I didn't post the article because BD players are sky rocketing or anything. I think it's actually inevitable that they will drop within the upcoming months, as BD now needs to compete with DVD... that and they have to clear out older profiles to make room for the (likely to be quite pricey) 2.0 players.

As to how it affects those already with players. Not much I suppose, other than that stagnating prices would slow the pace of adoption, therefore less media for all. You don't see these cause and effect scenarios before writing your responses?

The most popular (by an astounding margin) and future-proof player on the market, the PS3, hasn't gone up in price one cent. So for most people, the whole "OhTehNoesTehPlayarzAreGoingUpInPrice" non-story is moot.

Interesting that most "stories" covering this farcical "price raise" fail to mention this important fact.

Also telling is the fact that these "stories" fail to look at the most basic cause of price increases: the unforseen early victory leading to increased demand of Blu-ray players vs. supply. Remember "supply and demand?"

Since no one could have known about the Warner switch until literally a few days before it happened, no player producer could have ramped up player manufacturing in time to cover the sudden increased demand. Manufacturing just doesn't work that way. It usually takes a manufacturer a few months at least to ramp up, then you have to ship units to retail warehouses, which adds even more time.

Again, it's fortunate for Blu-ray that the by-far most popular player on the market, the PS3, has been in a very healthy state of supply, which may also explain why prices of the PS3 at retail haven't gone up a single penny, while the standalones, which have never been exactly stacked up on shelves and in retailer's warehouses, are experiencing a slight rise as a result of increased demand for the same amount of supply.

bought NCFOM for 27 bucks at Futureshop. Apparently, they had a sale few days a (which i was NOT aware of) and today they bumped the price to 33 bucks. I was low on cash and decided to bail out. Before i did, i realized that the pricemarking has a glue residue left behind and that another price was on top of it.

I searched all NCFOM discs and behold! they forgot to change price in "New Release" section :D

If anyone is interested, there are still few copies with old price. It's at Futureshop @ Yonge/Dundas - Toronto.

I Am Rental err Legend and I Robot but got a 5/5 for PQ and Audio, I always liked Pirates 2 and Black Hawk Down also.
I hear The Rock is pretty good too for audio.

Thanks all ...

Of the ones listed so far, I own:

Pirates 2
Black Hawk Down
NiN Live: Beside You in Time

What shall I watch? Hmmm ... haven't seen BHD in years ... maybe I'll go with that. Thank god the neighbor below me is out :p

I don't even have my sub hooked up, and I can still cause shit to shake :D

What's the best order to watch the 3 Matrix films and the Animatrix? I've seen the first movie before, and have just watched it again. I've seen small bits and pieces of the last 2 movies, plus the free animatrix ep that was on xblm. A friend said to watch the animatrix in between 1 and 2, but I wanted any additional input I could get to make sure.

Put in the first one, while it is loading up take the other two and the Animatrix cover them in 151 and burn them.

Ouch.

Watch the movies in their order and then watch Animatrix afterwards. It fills in some blanks but would give away some stuff if you watched it too early. It's not essential at all, just nice add-on.

While I've heard that the 2nd and 3rd film are looked upon as inferior, I had never read or heard anything bad about the animatrix shorts. Still, I'm critically pretty forgiving of many things widely panned (Star Fox Adventures, the Transformers film, off the top of my head) so I still like to give them all a fair shake. (ie. I forgot to say, don't post "burn them" :D )

Thanks. That was exactly what I was afraid of. Ookie, tomorrow, I'll watch...TEH SECOND ONE!!!

The second one is actually fairly good, if only for the bad ass action scenes (highway car chase anyone?). If the Wachowski's wouldn't have put in that big orgy/dance scene the movie would have been a lot better.

The third one is just incredibly disappointing...

Burn the Animatrix? Are you kidding? Burn half of the second one and the third one, if that's physically possible. :lol

Saw The Last Starfighter (HD DVD) and Appleseed: Ex Machina (Blu Ray) last night. Last Starfighter looked decent, I would have given it 3/5 PQ rather than the 2/5 HDD gave it. But that's only taking into account its age, otherwise I would go lower. It sounded pretty flat (stereo, I guess). Here's hoping for an overhaul when it gets put out on BD.

Appleseed looked fabulous. So many eye candy scenes in there. I didn't like the score, however, and thought the audio shone in parts but mostly didn't really stand out. The storyline was meh, imo, but the action was so well done that it's worth a pickup for fans of the genre.

Is there much of a jump between 720p and 1080p? Assuming both tv's are 42 inch.

No.

You might see the screen door effect on the 720p set if you sit too close....what's your viewing distance?

NIN - Beside You in Time.
It was my first blu-ray purchase and its is an ultimate audio/video testing ground. Extras are 480i and shows, but the live concert is amazingly done. It's one of the first blu-ray concerts (2nd actually) and its the first disc to use VC-1 Codec with slightly better result that HD-DVD (atleast thats what Trent & Co. said).

Also, its one of the only blu-ray disc (that i've seen) that contains audio setting that tests all channels of speakers for best result.

On Blu-ray? How's the PQ/AQ? I watched it on DVD and liked it a lot.
It's pretty good, there's no major flaws, no black crush during darker scenes, no excessive film grain. Audio-wise, it's a pretty tame sound track, the entire movie is front loaded as the rear speakers aren't used much at all. Which could of been nice for more environmental sounds, etc... Also, What few action scenes there are could of used a little more umph in the mid-bass area, but that's just me being nitpicky. That said, considering the quality of the film, it's well worth a look.

I'm insulted that you didn't mention what pre/pro you bought. You had to know I was going to ask. :D

lmc2.front.jpg

I'm waiting for this sucker. It's going to have True HD and DTS MA included in the final specs. 4 HDMI 1.3 inputs.

Right now, my demo referene is Live Free Die Hard Jet scene on Blu-ray. It's got everything - highs, LOWS!! And I mean a lot of lows.

Matters how close you sit.

The 20/20 viewing distance versus resolution pic should be in this thread somewhere.

Oh sorry ... thought I had mentioned it in this thread. I must have posted it in the HDTV one instead.

I guess this means you haven't noticed my posts over the last 6 months :p I pre-ordered an Integra 9.8 through a guy at avsforum, in ... August. Unfortunately, there were a lot of people ahead of me on the list, and if you haven't been paying attention ... it's been probably the hardest piece of HT electronics to get a hold of in a long time. Maybe ever. The demand outstripped supply by many, many months. It's still pretty much luck if you can get one.

Anyway, I finally had to cancel my order at the beginning of Feb ... and contacted another avsforum member who was expecting to get some new shipments in within a month or so. I also ordered its 'brother', the Onkyo Professional PR-SC885P from a distributor (they said it would be about a month) ... and decided I would keep whichever came first.

The Onkyo Pro showed up last week. I'll post some impressions once its dialed in some more ... but so far, 0_0.

Best audio I've ever heard in my house ... by miles.

I'm keeping my eye on Emotiva's lineup (LMC2, MMC2, DMC2) ... Sherwood Newcastle's upcoming pre/pro ... and the B&K Reference 70. If they supposedly offer something more, I will certainly give them a test against my Onkyo to see if I want to move.

The fact I have an LMC1, and can therefore get 40% any of their new pre/pro's doesn't hurt :p Crap, if the DMC2 doesn't offer enough to make me want to replace the Onkyo, I may get the LMC2 to use as a secondary system. :D

I'll probably pass, just because I'm currently not running a sub (I'm in an apartment) ... though, my mains have some pretty impressive bass.

its 18.89 on buy.com if you use the google checkout, and thats with shipping. amazon isnt free unless you buy over 25$

Or have a prime account with free 2 day shipping :P

Holy crap, watched and listened to a few scenes of I, Robot and the PQ is AMAZING. Oddly on some five-star PQ movies I was only somewhat impressed (Ratatouille being one of them) but I,R is REALLY GORGEOUS. Holy freaking crap.

I'll take some pics once my website gets back online. So worth it for demo material alone.

Bought the following HD-DVDs:

The Deer Hunter
Dragonheart
The Holiday
The Game
The 40 Year Old Virgin
Heroes Season 1 Box-Set

Total price: $83 AUD

Huzzah for the death of HD-DVD!

I watched The Host recently, didn't really like it that much to be honest. I don't like picking apart movies, I either dislike it, thought it was ok (i.e. worth watching once), like it, or love it.

BTW anyone know if the Animatrix would receive any benefits from being in HD or not?
