The HD Movie thread

It may have already been posted in this thread, but I looked back a few pages and didn't see anything.

I've been to 2 different Wal-Marts in the last week and both have all of their HD-DVD titles on clearance for $17.00. I don't know if they'll go any lower than that. Wal-Mart isn't like Target. Target will continue discounting something until its gone. Wal-Mart tends to only do 1 or 2 discounts on something and if it doesn't sell, they make the manufacturer take it back.

Thanks to the demise of HD DVD and increased Blu-ray retail momentum, next-gen disc sales are starting to carve out a bigger slice of the home video pie, a new report suggests.

According to an analysis of Nielsen VideoScan First Alert numbers conducted by Home Media Magazine, Disney's Blu-ray chart-topper 'No Country for Old Men' drew 9.8 percent of its total unit sales from Blu-ray during its first five days in stores.

Faring even better was Fox's 'Hitman,' which saw 12.6 percent of total customers taking home the Blu-ray version during its first five days.

By comparison, high-def percentages during the height of the format war rarely topped 2 to 3 percent of a title's total disc sales. (Even 2007's biggest high-def seller, the HD DVD-only release of 'Transformers,' generated little more than 4 percent of its total unit sales from the next-gen version.)

Adams Media Research analyst Tom Adams cited a newfound sense of confidence among consumers as the main reason for Blu-ray's recent siege on DVD market share, as many of those previously waiting out the format war may now be willing to dip their toes in the Blu waters.

For the ones saying blu-ray isnt gaining on dvd. :D

I was telling everyone it would be better to have just one format:D The consumer is going to win in all of this. More sales equals more effort put into the hd versions:D

speaking of pack-man's ... someone should continue to update the 'since inception' pack-man between BD and HD DVD for shits and giggles.

That is exciting. We may see Blu-Ray take over sooner than expected :D

Also, Penton-Man over at Blu-Ray.com has been saying for a while that the studios are likely to stage "planned-obsolescence" for DVD. At some people in the not-so-distant future, there will be a draw-down of DVD stock at retail in favor of Blu-Ray.

That wouldn't surprise me. Assuming BD continues to make gains (ie. doesn't look like its going to fail or stay in niche-land), its cheaper to go to one format in the long-run ... for studios, retailers, and CE's.

i know this is about hd movies.

but the new HMM doesn't have blu-ray vs hd-dvd YTD no more.
they have included a Blu-ray vs DVD for the week now.

for the week ended, it was 94% DVD to 6% blu-ray.

it only includes the top 20 dvd software vs the top 20 blu-ray software in the calculations.

page 2-3

Interesting...

They do still have the High-def Sellers chart on Pg 12:

I Am Legend really cleaned up. Wold love to know the BD/DVD ratio on that specifically.

Can someone PLEASE tell me how to open Blu-Ray movies without leaving sticky residue all over?

The ones I've been buying have 3 security stickers (top, side, bottom). The top one always comes off fine but the side and bottom stickers never peel off easily. By the time I'm done the area where the sticker was is all sticky and crap... Hope it's not just me having trouble with this :lol
Use a box knife and slit each one down the middle and peel from there instead of trying to pry them off with your fingernail. Much easier. Also, you can use the sticker you just peeled off and it's stickiness to remove anything left over. Just press the sticky part against the residue and pull off, kind of in a tapping motion (hard to describe but it works).

Theatrical = DVD
Unrated/SE = Blu-ray

Mark my words, by mid 2009 for sure.

If you're a spaceflight enthusiast like myself, you'll be pleased to know that Mark Gray of the excellent Spacecraft Films recently e-mailed me to say that he's soon to begin work on his first high-def release on Blu-ray Disc. We'll post more details as soon as they're available.
So awesome.

Yeah eventually dvd players will be phased out, since you can play regular dvds on a blu-ray player anyway and on a non hd tv...The ce companies should want to start making this switch pretty soon, since the dvd player market has pretty much bottomed out...

I just saw Initial D on Blu-Ray. The picture quality was like the movie, not bad, not great, good. A solid B, or 7.0 on the IGN/Gamespot scale. The box says, "The Ultimate Car Racing Movie." A More accurate title would be "Good Car Stunts With Some Infrequent But Crappy CGI." Anthony Wong is in it, and he should be president of awesome, so its got some good things goin for it.

I was going to finally pick up Stargate, but I just found out there is no theatrical cut on the disc and it is just a rehash of the Ultimate Edition DVD transfer complete with the image problems and print damage:

You should boycott Stargate :lol

Just kidding :P That sucks man, that's one of my favorite films, and I've been waiting to pick it up...guess I may have to wait for a 're-master' should it ever come along...

Watched Blade Runner for the first time ever... I bought the Blade Runner (Five-Disc Complete Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] (2007)

I do remember the very ending, so I must have seen that part on TV over the years...

The transfer looks incredible on my TV and the cars flying around look so much better than Star Wars CG crap...

But... I am looking to get rid of the package now... while the movie is really good, it is not what I consider "one of my favorite movies" and will not see myself re-watching it...

So... time to look for a trade or sale...

My BattleStar Galactica S1 (Aus hd-dvd) arrived. Yeah it looks great..Grainy..but not poor like everyone was saying. BSG always had grain and some hi-def grain never hurts :D .

:lol that was actually released like that?

It's actually one of the shots re-added via the Director's cut. It was present in both DVD editions; REALLY noticeable on the Ultimate due to the new transfer, and the Blu-Ray uses the exact same transfer as the Ultimate Edtion DVD only without the option of viewing the theatrical cut that is missing all that print damage. The Director's Cut footage is in bad shape and whenever the new scenes appear it looks worse than the rest of the movie.

Just saw Enchanted. Amazing quality in both the audio and visual departments and the movie was so fun to watch!

Anyone else hear that Unbreakable has one of the best PQ among blu-rays? I heard on the Playstation Nation podcast. Might pick it up, but I'll watch it again first before buying.

Wow, WTF.
It's like they used a different camera!

I'm glad to see some serious effort going into restoring some of these older films.

I didn't like it enough to buy it, but it is only $20 on Amazon.

My 'HD' tv is only 1024 x 768 42 inch plasma. Samsung. Don't have the model number. I was wondering if this was the reason that I'm not seeing much of a difference if any between dvd and bluray. Today I was flicking between ghost rider on bluray on my PS3 and star wars a new hope on my 360 and the bluray movie didn't seem any clearer or anything. On a new hope you could make out all the wrinkles etc in faces and the textures in clothes. Nothing was blurry. Bit of a grain here and there but nothing to complaing about.

Being in Australia I think means that our dvds run at a higher resolution then those in the US. I could be wrong.

Feel free to point and laugh but I'd appreciate comments beyond 'dude you be blind'.

I'm not sure, but comparing two different movies isn't the best idea.

If only people could easily and properly compare DVD and HD running side by side, the difference is there and it's not subtle at all.

how good is crimson tide on blu-ray? picture quality doesn't have to be 5/5 as long as it its decent. i'm more concerned about story.

i've never seen this movie but i like denzel films and gene hackman isn't too bad either.

i only played $20 CDN for it brand new, which isn't too bad.

should i open it or return it?

thanks.

Australian PAL resolution is 576 at 25fps.

Your TV can only display 768 vertical lines max, with rectangular pixels.

No, there's not going to be much of a difference between upscaled DVD and Blu-ray for you on your set.

Find a 1080p TV though, and view the DVD and blu-ray on that... there should be significant differences in quality.

holy shit, finally. Among the finest television I've ever seen and I think that I'll ever see. I've watched the whole thing again on my PS3 and it looks ok, but nothing like hi-def so this news is AFW. Hopefully it won't be too close to Christmas and cost $100 or less (from amazon).
