That's only the percentage for the 20 best selling titles for both formats though. DVD must still be hovering in the 98-99% in overall sales.

Still, an increase is a good thing.

It's all about the best selling titles as that's the best indication of market penetation.

Those numbers will go way up when later this year, they'll start to release special editions only on Blu-ray.

Alas, I guess I don't own any 6.1 movies. I'm guessing the U2 HD DVD is mislabeled. The Star Wars Clone Wars dvd I own is DD 5.1 EX.

I guess my wife wins this round, the 6th speaker is coming down since I can't find any movies to demo it with. :(

Oops, double post.

Thanks for the info, taj. I saw Revenge of the Sith, which has DD 5.1 EX. The movie sounded great, but there wasn't enough of presence in the rear center channel. :( In fact, I couldn't really make out any noise coming from there unless I put my head close to that speaker.

5.1 EX means there's a signal for the sixth speaker matrixed into the rear channels.

Anyone else sell off their HDDVDs recently?

I really got quite a bit more than expected for mine. Made around 200 from 17 (5 of which were free) of them + Heroes.

I won't sell any of them until their BD equivalents are released. Even then, I have two WB movies with BD equivalents and I'm not selling them until a get a good deal on the BD version. At that point, the crossover won't cost me much, if anything.

Plus, I have two HD DVD players vs. 1 BD player, so definitely no rush from me. I'll probably have HD DVD in my house for another year or maybe longer.

Finally, for movies like 300, where the HD DVD version is superior, I'll wait for the re-release. WB said in a roundtable that they were waiting for the BD tech to catch up last year so they could release the equivalent to the HD DVD version. Hopefully that wasn't all hot air. I'm keeping a close eye on Batman Begins. That may be my first HD double dip depending on the PQ impressions and once I confirm that the 1.1 extras are all there from the HD DVD version.

I'm keeping all my HD DVDs. I have both players, and the only person who watches them is my brother, and he has a dual format LG PC drive.

Just got my 100th HD DVD yesterday, T2: Ultimate Edition. The PQ is comparable to my Studio Canal Edition, a tad softer however, but it still looks good nonetheless. The disc is MASSIVE in terms of features, and the Skynet internet features are pretty damn cool. Albeit useless, you can have a view of downtown L.A. from a live webcam, and there was also a shot from EngadgetHD's website showing the Home Media weekly BD/HD/DVD sales :lol

There's still a lot of German text on the disc so hopefully Kinowelt will offer an entire English menu web update sometime down the road.

Can you tell me if the the bonus features are in HD? I can't find any info on that. I was tempted to buy it too because it costs under 20€ but I would import the US version if the bonus stuff is just in SD.

purchased + watched Unbreakable last night.

Really impressed with the movie. Easily my favorite that shymalan(sp?) has done. Actually...maybe that's the only one he's done that I liked.

Might pick up coyote ugly next.

Hey Rasslin' Fans...a little tidbit on the upcoming Wrestlemania 24 Blu-ray disc, from the blog of Jim Ross:

I hear that the 2008 Wrestlemania 24 DVD will be released soon using Blu Ray technology and will include the WWE Hall of Fame, essentially in its entirety. Flair’s speech is worth the price of the entire package I assure you.

I heard Ric Flair's actual speech was well over an hour, and a whole lot was cut out for the TV broadcast, so this is nice news.

So, to whoever it was that wanted Bonnie and Clyde impressions.
Just watched it. Excellent excellent transfer. It does have its moments where the PQ is rather bad, but 99% of the rest of the movie is excellent. Really sharp and vibrant colors.

For the audio peoples, i was getting mad humming with my receiver matrixing the signal into 7.1. :lol Forgot my receiver is set to matrix pretty much every signal from the ps3 into 7.1... except for 7.1 signals.
So i just put it into pure audio mode and all was well.

Good flick, though HDD makes note of "overt sexuality" and "love making" as a taboo. There wasnt any love making, just an allusion to love making. Sucks that that was taboo only 40 years ago.

Saw Old School last night. I was disappointed by the PQ, so I'm not sure how HDD gave it 4 stars. An upgrade over the dvd for sure, but really mediocre. There are other comedies (like 40 yo Virgin) that easily outclass it in terms of sharpness and detail.

The movie was funny as ever, of course. "You're my boy Blue!!" :lol

I'd rank the M. Night movies as:

1. Signs
2. Village
3. Sixth Sense
4. Unbreakable

5. Lady in the Water

You put the village over sixth sense? I enjoyed the Village but I liked SS a little more than the Village. Though I think The village did have a greater sense of primal fear than SS.

The rest I agree with. Lady in the Water was pretentious rubbish. :P

I watched a few of the production report vids in the US version. I don't think they were full HD but they were surprisingly high quality. Better than SD and widescreen.

Yeah, the problem with Sixth Sense for me was that someone spoiled the ending, which as you can imagine is a HUGE no-no for that film. I was so pissed. So the ending in Village caught me more off-guard with its crazy twists. I bought the premise for that one hook, line, and sinker so I was surprised big time by the reveals.

I haven't seen The Villiage, but I rank them:

Sixth Sense

Unbreakable

Signs
Lady in the Water

Sixth Sense is the only one I think is a great movie, and no, not because of the twist. Unbreakable is just OK, and the other two are bad, bad movies.

I see what you're getting at. I too was spoiled with Sixth sense, but that's cause I saw the movie 3 years after it was released. XD

Hey guys, if I go down to my local Best Buy here in St. Louis, will they have the shitty American Sigourney Weaver version of Planet Earth or would they have the true BBC David Attenborough version?

Original BBC version.

What amp have you got? I know some amps can't matrix a 5.1PCM signal into 7.1 but I assumed it was like that with every amp

when was it unintentionally funny? It's not a great movie, but it's not AWFUL. Also the movie is intentionally funny at quite a few parts.

Onkyo 705. Built the same setup for myself and my dad. Couldnt be happier with it. My parents couldnt be happier with it.
Absolutely love it, would definitely recommend it to anyone who doesnt need the uber awesome ultimate receiver with all the best video scaling options. Especially at the $550 we paid for both.

$30 for it and also for Commando :/

FOX needs to get their pricing right.
Precisely why i havent bought ID4 yet. I have no problem with double dipping movies i like but not at FOX's prices.

Yea well, you suck. :(

My wife made me watch it after she saw it. She said it was really good and that the story was great. Bruce Willis was shot and I said "so he's a ghost, huh?" she was so mad...

I dunno, it was just easy to see that that was the setup for the movie.

watched Old Country last night. Wow, that was an amazing film. Had no idea what it was about
(actually thought Javier's character was the hero until about the 5th minute of the film. whoops.)
and was just thrilled by the entire thing. I'm amazed there
wasn't the typical "happy ending"
but I also applaud them for that because it's so rare.

Since this is the HD Movie thread, I'll add this as I don't think I've seen it mentioned yet. Black Sheep came out last week in Britain. I bought it and it's a disappointing release, unfortunately. Image quality is decent (AVC) but audio is just plain DD5.1 and the extras are identical to the DVD. It's even on a BD25. I'd tell you if it was region-free or not but I don't know - the box simply says it's Region 2 :lol This is a very disappointing release from Icon, who released Apocalypto over here (looked amazing, 20bit PCM audio soundtrack)

Sounds good :D

I just bought a new receiver (Denon 1908). I didn't need HD audio decoding as the PS3 converts to PCM, so the Denon was perfect for me. I love it and couldn't be any happier with it. I watched a few movies this weekend and my jaw was on the floor during Spiderman 3. I've never heard ANYTHING sound as good as this sounded. I plan on watching something tonight but can't decide (it's either Casino Royale or War)

Is the Onkyo 705 really only $550? That's insane...over here it's £500 (about $1000). The Onkyo 605 is the equivalent of $800! That's why I bought the Denon. It's getting heavily discounted (I can't see why people wouldn't want it - it sounds stunning) and I got it for £300...about £100 less than the Onkyo 605

Alright, since I'm a list whore:

1) Signs
2) The Village
3) The Sixth Sense
4) Unbreakable
5) Lady in the Water

One reason I put The Village over The Sixth Sense is because I fucking HATE the way they handled the "ghosts" in it. Truly awful way to handle them and a few unintentionally funny moments such as: "I'm feeling much better now!" That line was a mood killer.

WTF? 40-Year-Old Virgin was DNR'd to hell. It looked like shit. I don't see how you could possibly think it looked better than Old School, not that Old School looks very good.

They will if you don't buy them. I'm proudly Fox-free.

I do not know what DNR is, nor do I want you to tell me. But, it's not even close on my 56" 1080p tv. 40 YO Virgin looks absolutely fantastic. Sharp, detailed and very vibrant. Old School looks very mediocre, like some of the maligned Universal films.

every time I see someone talk about DNR in their movies I keep thinking of Dolby Noise Reduction. I know it stands for something else but I grew up with tapes so that's ingrained. :lol

The quoted line, the actual first appearance of the
alien and what they look like
.

I was laughing anyway. It was so hackneyed. People put down the Lady in the Water for reasons that apply to Signs as well.

man I just saw Man On Fire, brilliant movie, very emotional moments without ever feeling cheap and cliché. Shame about the BD having no supplements, if it had even just the commentaries (straight fucking port, no excuses for FOX) then I would buy it. Good thing the PQ and stuff are top notch though. I'll wait for the double dip, if they FOX doesn't do it then shame on them.

Man after watching all 3 Lord of the Rings on TNTHD this weekend I want them on blu-ray so bad =(

Haha, ditto. I wanna see what a lot of money and effort put into a pristine transfer will look like.

Hopefully they decide to release the Extended versions on BD. 4 hour Return of the King or bust!

Got Juno early. As the review upthread mentioned, there's a noticeable bit of grain in the transfer. Bonus materials are good but I'm pretty sure they're all on the DVD version as well. Don't buy this expecting it to be good Blu demo material.

Oh, and try not to get too excited over the "Digital Copy Special Edition" stuff at the top - the digital copy is on a separate DVD-ROM in the case. (And since the disc isn't technically released yet, I can't redeem the code. Blah.)
