I guess this is the best place to post this now, is Warner still offering the replacement disc for the BD Blade Runner disc 5 mishap? I tried calling them once but I guess I missed their hours and now I'm in Japan until June...

yeah, 720p. Looked really nice, but then my projector is 720p anyway. I'm not convinced of the actual need for 1080p, but I want it anyway for archival quality and futureproofing.

I think its 30 days to start watching, then 24 hours to watch as much as you like.

rented for $4.99 I think. It downloads direct to the appleTV and is stuck there - can't transfer to the PC.

as I mentioned, only stereo sound, but it still sounded good in prologicIIx on my denon receiver. You can't seem to see whether a movie has 5.1 before renting it.

Are there many movies available?

Edit: Just checked, the service doesn't look to be fully available yet in Canada.

probably been like this for a while, but I headed over to best buy tonight and noticed the HD-DVDs were 100% gone. I moved next door to target, same thing there. I was there 2 weeks back and they had plenty in stock back then.

Firefly on Blu Ray confirmed!

http://tvshowsondvd.com/news/Firefly-Blu-ray-Release/9350

...Our own Gord Lacey contacted Fox Home Entertainment about Staite's comments, and asked them if this release - if actually coming - would be on DVD or Blu-ray Disc. Fox replied that it is indeed coming, and for Blu-ray Disc format!....

...this package is still in the planning and development stages. Therefore, a release timeframe hasn't been set yet, and many details have not been finalized...

:D

A lot of those movies are $5 more expensive than they were yesterday. Lame.

Yep, that sucks. I would've preferred a BOGO myself. Still, if you get 3 $20 movies, it works out to about $13 per movie.

perfect timing since Im trying to build my collection :D

just grabbed Fifth Element, Res. Dogs and Big Fish. 3 favorite movies of mine.

Great news on firefly.

Despite picking the wrong format, Im pretty glad there is one format now.. seems to be working out for the best, and the PiP stuff is still being pushed on BRD which was my main reason for backing HDDVD

:D

Awesome but it'll probably be like every boxset and not get released in Europe (just like Prison Break and Lost)

Play.com just bumped There Will Be Blood up til June 23rd from July 7th! :D :D

Hope it's not a mistake.

German release is June 12th ;)

Can't wait for this one. Hope it will have better bonus stuff on the disc than No Country though.

At this rate there won't be for years. They only just recently launched video downloads of any kind and it seems they are pursuing seperate canadian-specific licensing, so it should continue to be on-par or worse than Microsoft's own poor service (which I believe is at what, 30 titles? :lol )

Are you guys getting your BB gift cards through the mail?

Got mine on Saturday. Came in a plain white envelope, with no Best Buy markings on it. Had I not felt the gift card inside, I'd have assumed it was junk mail and tossed it without opening it. :(

Saw two movies yesterday:

End of Days: I thought the transfer was mediocre, and its Universal which was inconsistent with their HD DVD catalogs. The problem is that the movie is very dark and there wasn't much detail visible in dark scenes. The day scenes looked good, though. I'd never seen the movie before, so I can't say how much of a leap this was over the SD version, but I imagine it would be a pretty big difference. The audio was surprisingly active imo. Overall, it's a good pickup for fans of the movie if you can find it cheap. I thought the movie was average, but once the story picked up, it was entertaining.

Anchorman: Legend of Ron Burgundy: I thought this looked pretty good. Tons of detail on faces, clothing, etc. I own the dvd so I could appreciate the jump in quality. Early on, there is a closeup of Will Ferrell's face that shows off the amount of detail the HD transfer provides. The audio was fine, though it's a comedy, so nothing special there.

Ugh, haven't gotten mine. Did you and everyone else who got it use your Reward Zone card when buying the HD-DVD player? I didn't use mine and am afraid they won't be able to identify my address. I suppose I better go down to BB and get a copy of my receipt to call them.

Yeah, I used my Reward Zone card both times. I bought the add-on in store, and the A3 during that Best Buy for Business online sale, in case if anyone was wondering if that purchase counted.

Sweet amazon.com is doing what best buy is.

I just got this email...

"Dear Amazon.com Customer,

As someone who purchased an HD DVD player from us before February 23, 2008,* you might like to hear about a special offer available from Amazon.com.

New technologies don't always work out as planned. We at Amazon.com value our customer relationships more than anything and would like to support customers who purchased these players by offering a credit good for $50 off any products sold by Amazon.com.** Just use promotional code ****-******-****** when checking out. Poor? I'm surprised he rated the movie so lowly. I remember liking it... it's a friggen Ahnold movie

Peter Bracke is an awfully moody reviewer, but then again, who goes to HDD to read up on the actual movies that were reviewed months/years/decades ago.

Exactly imo they could just scrap that part of the reviews.

Got my $50 best buy gift card, wooohoo

Time to buy me some Munchausen!

I just bought Munchausen yesterday, and while it's not something I would ever use to show off HD, it is by far the best this movie has ever looked. There is some inconsistency between scenes, some are overwrought with grain, while some come close to that 3D depth we all crave. All in all my guess is this is as close as we're ever going to get to how it looked in theaters. My original DVD actually started crying when it realized how terrible it looks next to the remastered Blu-ray.
