I just got this email...

"Dear Amazon.com Customer,

As someone who purchased an HD DVD player from us before February 23, 2008,* you might like to hear about a special offer available from Amazon.com.

New technologies don't always work out as planned. We at Amazon.com value our customer relationships more than anything and would like to support customers who purchased these players by offering a credit good for $50 off any products sold by Amazon.com.** Just use promotional code ****-******-****** when checking out. I want one :(

I bought two players from Amazon (the XA2 and the HDA2).. hopefully CC runs one and I can get 50 bucks back for the 360 add on as well.

Exactly imo they could just scrap that part of the reviews.

I completely agree.. especially when it hurts the overall disc review. All I want to know is if its a 5 star picture, 5 star sound, extras. I dont care if you like the movie..

Anyone spot any more HD-DVD sales? Fry's has 6 different HD-DVD titles for $7.99 but they all suck except clerks 2. That sale ends today.

I ordered the 5 disc Blu-Ray of Blade Runner . . . I'm looking forward to that.

Now that a format has won the war, can we start expecting Criterion Blu-Rays soon? Please?

I keep looking for firesales as well. The best I can find is deepdiscount with a bunch of sub 15 dollar movies.. which isnt exactly the firesale I was looking for. I want post Saturn death levels of firesale where I walked into funcoland and walked out with 10 AAA games for less than 50 bucks.

I look forward to seeing how over priced CC BRs might be, I wouldn't be surprised if their average price for each movie will be at least $50-60...

How come no one told me Superbad was so damn funny?

Movie looked pretty good too. Audio-wise, there was this weird echo. It was bad enough when I set it to Dolby TrueHD, but more pronounced when I picked 5.1 PCM. I use optical, so I'm not sure if that was the issue. Maybe it was my receiver's settings.

Posted on the gaming side but the news should be here too:

DTS-HD Master Audio(TM) Now Available for
PLAYSTATION(R)3 Computer Entertainment System
Apr 10 at 09:00
Profile hits: QU1

DTS, Inc., a digital audio technology company dedicated to delivering the ultimate entertainment experience, has announced that its DTS-HD Master Audio technology is now available for the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system.

DTS-HD Master Audio is capable of delivering audio that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master at super high variable bit rates (up to 24.5 Mbps on Blu-ray Discs). This bit stream is so fast and the transfer rate so high that it can deliver 7.1 audio channel, 96k/24-bit sound identical to the original studio master. DTS' single-bit-stream codec design enables supremely efficient content programming and consumer playback. The new PS3 with DTS-HD Master Audio will be available by simply downloading the upcoming firmware upgrade on April 15th, 2008.

"We are extremely pleased that Sony Computer Entertainment is adding the full spectrum premium DTS-HD Master Audio codec into the PS3 so that more than 10 million owners of one of the best selling computer entertainment systems can have the best sounding, most efficient and flexible audio technology available as well," said Brian Towne, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Consumer Division at DTS. "DTS-HD Master Audio is fast becoming the must-have feature for high definition entertainment enthusiasts."

"PS3 was designed to enable delivery of new and improved technologies like DTS-HD Master Audio," said Teiji Yutaka, Senior Vice President, Software Platform Development, SCE. "So we are delighted to be able to offer this capability to PS3 users."

Wow great news on DTS-HD MA! I knew it was coming, but never thought it would be here as soon as next week!

Die Hard 4 is ready and waiting to tear my house down :).

Frickin awesome. I NEED to get a new receiver. Optical audio is starting to seem ancient for me right now. :(

I too wish I had gone for a better receiver now. I'm curious from the audiophiles though, would you recommend I upgrade my receiver or speakers? My receiver supports up to dd+ I believe. I was using out of the box speakers (onkyo 650) but recently upgraded the front speakers to some nice polk audio from my dad (although they are about 15 years old, very low usage though.)

I want a new receiver, and front channel speaker next likely, but just curious as to where people allocate their funds.

It's always a budget balancing act. If you have great speakers but a lowly receiver then things won't sound their best and vice versa. That being said your speakers will probably stick around longer than any receiver so it might be wise to allocate most of your funds there in the beginning. I have B&W 600 series speakers and I've been very, very happy with them over the years.

Yeah, I guess I'll have to research how good the speakers I got from my dad, are. Do you know if speaker technology is a lot better nowadays than it was say a decade ago or more? These were high-end speakers at the time, and my parents rarely used them.

Midas said:
What would you use if not optical? HDMI? I honetly don't know, just asking. :)

Yeah, if you want to take advantage of Dolby TrueHD, DD Plus, or DTS HD, or 5.1 Uncompressed PCM you need to use HDMI.

Well the uses of speakers has changed a lot over the years. Twenty years ago not many people had home theaters and were using cassette decks and turntables to listen to music. Speakers today not only have to sound great with music, but HT as well. Many of the materials used in speakers today weren't really used 20 years ago, but it's debatable if the new materials actually sound "better".

Speaker efficiency is also something to be concerned about. The less efficient the speakers, the more power you're going to need to drive them. If you don't have enough power you run the risk of clipping the speakers and damaging them.

So if my receiver doesn't support DTS-MA but does support 7.1 Uncompressed, and I'm running HDMI...will the PS3 convert it to PCM like it does True HD?

It's hard to tell but it appears to be onboard PS3 decoding and not bitstream. I wish they'd have both options as some of us have HDMI 1.3 receivers with decoding onboard the amp.

Plus, I'd rather see "DTS MA" light up, rather than "PCM". But I'll take it either way.

Thanks. That's good to know when I'm getting a receiver. Really need to get a sound system.

I wasn't planing to get a PS3 anytime soon... But it is hard to resist now since it is a feature complete player now.

Think ill get a PS3: Uncharted & Heavenly Sword Bundle next week and a PCM reciver next month.

Poor? I'm surprised he rated the movie so lowly. I remember liking it... it's a friggen Ahnold movie

Peter Bracke is an awfully moody reviewer, but then again, who goes to HDD to read up on the actual movies that were reviewed months/years/decades ago.
Sorry, i guess you missed a page or two back when i posted the MIB poster someone said "it will probably have a crap transfer like all older Sony movies."

So that post was purely sarcasm.

unless you have analog outs... which is alot of wires, but it gets the job done too. :lol

also, remember spend 90% of your budget on speakers. Good speakers can last 20 years, the technology just doesnt change that much, you will be replacing your reciever ever 2-5 years because technology changes often in that field.

When you're ready to buy, do your research. There's apparently HDMI receivers that don't really decode the signals or accept 5.1 PCM via HDMI. They just pass along the video signal to the tv. Just do what I do and ask here. :D

True. But in his case, that's not applicable since he owns a Ps3.

They're called HDMI switchers. The box will tell you what it does.

woohoo, got 50 free bucks, now to get some BRD!

These are the things Im looking at

T1, T2, Stargate - 50 bucks for all three, action movie fest..
Spiderman trilogy - hate the third movie so so much, but love 1 and 2 - 50 bucks for set
Lost Season 3 - costs 65 but I love Lost.. and dont own season 3 on DVD.

There are a few others Im looking at, but any opinions on these?

Also, I went from zero to 10 blurays in like 5 days. :lol Wallet am cry.

apparantly the PS3 doesn't have the correct chipset to support the bitstream output. But I agree, it would have been nice.

also nice is DTS-MA's core 1.5Mb/s stream which can be sent over optical, so those of you with optical only receivers shouldn't feel too disheartened, or suddenly feel the need to upgrade your receivers. DTS-MA core -> full decoding is a nice thing to have, but possibly not a noticable upgrade for many home systems.

Worth getting a HDMI receiver for trueHD though IMO, with DTS-MA being a bonus.

Decided to spend my 50 dollars on Casino Royale and 3:10 to Yuma. Im having to stick to PCM soundtracks since my BRD player doesnt do TrueHD and DTS-MA for a few more weeks.

So now I own:

Big Fish
Fifth element (remastered)
Reservoir Dogs
Ratatoille
Pirates of the Caribean 1 (hopefully with the correct framing)
No Country for Old Men
Hellboy
Casino Royale
3:10 to Yuma

My blu section is still dwarfed by its red neighbors, but its getting there.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post, but I didn't want to start a new thread.

Pretty much, I know nothing about technology, etc. My DVD player broke down awhile back, and I'm looking for a new one. These 'upconverting' ones caught my eye, but I don't really know exactly what that means. Their price isn't too bad, I just want to know if there's any noticeable difference if own a non-HD TV?

No difference on a standard tv. And they only upconvert on HDMI. There has an never been and never will be a standardd def tv with HDMI.

They are for HD TVs. It makes DVD less grainy on higher resolution sets. Its not going to help you now. But since there is not that big of a cost difference, you'll be all set once you upgrade your TV. So id say go for it.

Though I don't believe its been outright confirmed, it appears that the PS3 is using HDMI 1.3 (and is likely the only device to use it?) ... not 1.3a. Unfortunately, it doesn't allow for bitstreaming. Silicon Image fubar'd it a bit.

Anyway ... I'm REALLY happy to hear the news that the decoding is complete. Can't wait to test it out.

I am getting ratatouille and tekkon kinkreet on bluray and can choose one of the following for free. Which should I get GAF? I kinda want all of them but have seen none of them.

-superbad
-across the universe
-the black book (german mvoive not brittany murphy one)

I got Munchausen and checked it out.

If you can get past the grain, EE, it's pretty darn impressive for the films age and source condition. So much detail and the colors are really strong. Really cool for such a visual heavy film like Munchausen to finally look so good. It's like a whole new experience.

Definitely Superbad if you like penis jokes.

For a limited time buy any two Blu-ray discs listed below and receive a third free. Discount will automatically be applied once all participating items are added to your cart. Offer valid through April 18, 2008.

The selection is pretty limited on the sale; however, I picked up 300, Crash and Crank. I wish Super Bad, the Broly Movie set and District B-13 were a part of it.

Decided to get all of them plus 5th element. Problem solved. Although it means no new comics or games for a while. Just as well though, all comics can wait until i can get Scott Pilgrim Vol 5!
