you've got to be kidding.

band of brothers is probably the shining example in film of remembering fallen soldiers. you've never seen it before, i take it.

you haven't seen it, please just admit this and we'll let this one go.

Band of Brothers is the best work of cinematography that I've ever seen with regards to respecting the war veterans. In fact, this is something that I would recommend others to watch on Remembrance Day every year (not every episode since it would be 10+ hours).

WB is honestly the safest studio as far as releases go, they havent really borked one yet. The Matrix is the closest because they tinted everything green to match the sequals, but from what I've heard the 'brothers' made that call, not WB.

WB have caused an uproar for fitting Speed Racer onto a BD-25 and without HD audio.

WOW.

I've checked this thread 2 times in a long time. The first time I found out about the Godfather trilogy, and now I find out about Band of Brothers. I can't even begin to imagine what the DTS track will sound like for that. My ears are ready to bleed.

Do we have an announcement for Saving Private Ryan yet?

There are direct captures floating around from the Japanese HD-DVDs (which were not DNR'd), so we'll definitely have something to compare it to. I'd be surprised if Warner went to the trouble of redoing the transfers, but one never knows...

I'd be pretty happy if they used the same encodes. Those screen grabs looked quite excellent.

Apparently though the HD-DVD encode might have been Toshiba funded and uses a codec (AVC?) which Warner never uses.

It certainly would be nice though to get a new encode to maximize the bitrate. I can see many those grainy stylized scenes being very bit hungry.

Given the people behind BoB, I don't think they would approve of DNR if it clashed with their original vision of how it should look.

Amazon Deal of the Day is the Sony Blu Ray player for $299 with a free movie (from a small selection). Click Here.

I have my eye on this player, but I'm hoping to score a better deal by the holiday season.

How is it tasteless?
This a TRUE story of very brave soldiers who gave their lives during the war.

If anything, it's the PERFECT tribute. It's a love letter to the 1st Airborne Div.

Wow. I have no desire to get that, but I'm impressed by the set. Other companies need to take notes on this.

yea same, not really interested in those movies. I think they may hold a large nostalgia factor for some people.

Ugh, BoB for $100 on Blu-Ray?!?! Fucking amazing.

I'll have to wait for XMas though. Don't have the cash right now and need to get ready to pay fall tuition. :-(

:O

The only thing that might stop me from getting it day one is the price tag. Ouch.

I never saw all the movies (aside from the original) until AMC was airing them all probably in 1998 for the 30th anniversary and I enjoyed the hell out of them. However, the price tag and the fact that while it's a cool box set, the size of it is fucking annoying as hell since it doesn't fit on my shelves will likely prevent me from owning this anytime soon.

Band of Brothers for under $100? Awesome. :D I remember watching the DVD on a SDTV and being impressed as hell with the pq. This should murder my eyes.

Anyone know anything about Dexter being on brd? My wife and I love the show and season 2 is coming out on the 18th, but we won't buy it on DVD. Waiting is hard when you haven't heard even if it's coming out, but shit it's Showtime. You'd think season 2 on blu would be a given and season 1 any day now.

Just thinking about the TV shows I would kill to have on bluray gets me going. I hope like hell that the upcoming season 2 release of stuff like 30 Rock is on brd, no excuse to not imo.

Okay, what the HELL is up with Universal and hiding all the extras in a stupid U Control thing?

I picked up Doomsday (unfortunately...) on Tuesday and the extras from the DVD are cut up and hidden in the awful pip U Control feature, so there seems to be no way to watch the features in their entirety or even at full screen. So now I have to re-watch an entire 2 hour movie just to see the extras? Not to mention the DVD has both the R-rated and unrated cuts of the movie, while the Blu is only unrated. The DVD version should NOT be the superior version of the release.

I was looking at some of their upcoming titles and considering upgrading my DVD copies of Land of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead and The Thing with that "Halloween Starter Pack" they have coming up, but then I took a look at the specs... It appears that they all have their extras stuffed into a goddamn U Control as well. Where'd the 80 minute documentary from The Thing's DVD go? And the TONS of extras Dawn of the Dead including the side story footage filmed for the DVD? Fuck that Universal. I want to upgrade, not downgrade my movies!

Edit: To make things even more maddening, Land of the Dead seems to have the DVD extras, while the others do not.

I agree entirely, and I'm a huge Tim Burton fan. I'm still hoping they lose the original negatives in a fire, so we don't have to live in fear of ever having to watch it again.

Apparently they have to shove the movies on 25GB discs because there's no room on the 50GB replication lines.

Although that doesn't excuse the PiP thing. U-control should be (and has been on the Uni movies I have) about in-context video, photos, and text during the film, not an excuse to randomly throw in the SD extras into the main feature and not have the standard dvd extras available. Also, I think that there should be an option to watch the short PiP clips separately. I think Rattatouille and some other movies had this option.

The DVD version should NOT be the superior version of the release

I'm not sure how new you are to HD movies, but aside from PQ/AQ, there's been quite a few HD movies that are inferior in total content to their dvd counterpart. And yeah, that's pretty inexcusable.

Then why are both the mummy and mummy returns bd 50?
Which, are both universal movies.

They most likely want to cut costs to make more profit on this boxset. In a few years time there will be 'remastered' individual special editions on BD50s.

'Caligula' Coming to Blu-ray

One of the most controversial films of all time is coming to high-def, with Image Entertainment announcing an early-November Blu-ray release for 'Caligula.'

Produced by legendary Penthouse editor Bob Guccione, Jr. and documenting the decadence of the reign of Roman Emperor Gaius Julius Germanicus, 'Caligula' attracted an all-star cast (including Sir John Gielguld, Malcolm McDowell, and Dame Helen Mirren) but was later scorned by both its cast and critics when Guccione spliced in sexually explicit and violent footage to spice up the film.

Released in a myriad of video editions over the years, Image Entertainment has now announced 'Caligula: The Imperial Edition' for Blu-ray, bringing a newly-remastered and remixed version to high-def on November 4.

Tech specs include the complete unrated version of the film presented on a BD-50 dual-layer disc, with 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video and DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround.

Extras mirror past DVD editions and are extensive, including multiple audio commentaries, "The Making of Caligula" documentary, additional featurettes, behind-the-scenes footage, make-up tests, deleted scenes, and still galleries.

Suggested retail price for the Blu-ray has been set at $34.95.

You'll find the latest specs for 'Caligula' linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where it's indexed under its new date of November 4.

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/s...ejuice_Blu-ray_Gets_New_Date,_Exclusives/1976

Warner has unveiled a new date and specs for 'Beetlejuice,' which will now hit Blu-ray in early October and include Dolby TrueHD audio and exclusive extras.

As previously reported, Warner first announced a September 16 Blu-ray release for the Tim Burton classic, timed to coincide with a new 20th Anniversary DVD re-issue.

High-def fans will now have to wait an extra three weeks, however, with Warner pushing the Blu-ray back to October 7 (the DVD remains as scheduled.)

Updated specs for the Blu-ray will see a BD-25 single-layer presentation with 1080p/VC-1 video (1.85:1) and a first-ever Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround remix.

Previously announced extras include three bonus episodes of the 'Beetlejuice' cartoon series running over thirty minutes ("A-Ha," "Skeletons In The Closet," "Spooky Boo-tique"), plus the original theatrical trailer.

Newly-added to the Blu-ray will be a collectible booklet entitled "The Beginner's Guide to Seeing Ghosts" which includes production notes, photos and more, plus a CD soundtrack sampler with six songs by composer Danny Elfman.

As previously announced, suggested retail price for the Blu-ray has been set at $28.95.
WTF @ all the recent 25GB discs.

Metal Gear Solid 4 must've taken up a lot of 50Gb production lines. When BD movies generally don't sell over 200k right now and then MGS4 comes along with over 3 million copies out there, that's gotta really stress the 50Gb production to the limit.

So I tried the new Starship Troopers feature that lets you upload a photo of yourself to put in the movie. Sounds awesome eh?

It's bad. Hilariously bad. So bad. :lol

I think I'll take some pics to show how truely bad it is.

On HD DVD The Thing had the making of documentary in it so I would assume that it'll carry over to the BD release.

The muzzle flash is a gif frame animated at two frames a second. The tracking of these cutouts is atrocious. So bad. :lol

It could have worked if they did it a different way using the same tech, but egads does it not work here. :lol

All they had to do is "replace" one of characters' faces with your uploaded image, south park style, just make the uploaded face cutout follow the predefined path on the screen whenever that character shows up, and it would be perfect. What they did there instead is just stupid.

Yeah, I know a lot of earlier catalog titles suffered from this (which is why my collection is missing RoboCop) but I thought we were finally getting over this until I read the specs for Uni's upcoming releases.

And poor treatment of catalog titles like The Thing and Dawn of the Dead is one thing, but new titles like Doomsday being substandard is disgusting. Not to mention chopping up all these extras and making an interactive U Control track has got to be more expensive and time consuming than just dumping the SD video on the disc. Blah!

FUCK, people on AVS are saying that Escape from New York is just an upconvert and looks like shit.. ugh, now I wish I waited before importing.
