Haha I know what you mean. Pretty much every BD I have looks better than my the stuff they show at my shitty theater...

yes. I saw TheDarkKnight and the picture was murky, the audio was off and I believe the cinema ruined it for me (the cinema I was in, you could hardly hear the score). :( Can't wait to revisit it on Bluray.

Can someone give me a short breakdown of the Ironman situation. I read the last few pages, but I'm still not sure what was the problem with the disc to begin with.

I got my disc from Best Buy in Canada, it has a sticker on it (I didn't read the number)

When I put the disc in the PS3, Iron man's chest magnet thing started flashing on the screen and it lasted for a few minutes. I thought the disc froze, and remembering what some people reported as a problem/solution from Transformers (problem that I didn't have btw) I went and selected BD Live access to "confirm", just as I see suggested in this thread now. I also deleted all the settings from the BD Data folder, just in case, as I remember that was a solution for some problem someone had at some point. When I did that, and selected I do not allow internet access, the movie played fine.

Later on, I left the setting to allow access automatically, and the move eventually started like that as well, but when I went to BD Live access screen in the movie, it said I do not have internet connection.

So is the movie defective or what? It looks like it won't access BD live content even though I had left internet access to 'Allow'.\

Yah, BDs looks *tons* better than regular projector cinema. On better TVs they look better than even digitally projected cinema if you ask me. Anything projected will never have as good blacks and contrast.

Do any of you have the Onkyo reciver? I have the 705 what settings do you guys have it on to get the best sound?? I have it on PLII Movie - but I've been messing around with it lately, and I don't know which one is the best...I mean I could experiement but I'd rather take the experts opinions on here.

So for the rest of the calender year we have (in big releases)

Wall - E
Sleeping Beauty
The Dark Knight

...missing any?
Love my 705, i set mine up to matrix everything into THX 7.1. If it receives a 7.1 signal from the PS3 it does nothing, but for everything else DD 5.1, TrueHD 5.1 DTS 5.1 it makes it 7.1

I haven't seen it mentioned here specifically, but there are NO defective Iron Man discs in the wild. All are corrected. As most of you figured out, the problem last night was the BD-L servers getting slammed and just killing the startup of everyone's discs. Mine took like 20 minutes to start up the first time, and then after it started up the BD-Live feature yelled at me saying I didn't have an internet connection. Being this was my first BD-Live disc I got worried that I got a defective disc.. But before I went to bed I gave BD-Live one more shot and it connected, downloaded the trivia game, and worked fine.
OK, that makes sense and I thought it was the case, but just wasn't sure. I've read that for some people Transformers BD had the same issue - hammered servers resulted in very slow startup times. I got the disc a few days after the release so I probably avoided that.

Still, it's incredibly dumb that they don't have some check in place to prevent this boot time problem. Or just don't keep trying to do this crap on boot time, but do it when an option from the menu is selected, or something.

I'm not sure I like the whole thing with java controlling BDs to begin with. It adds no real convenience, and it removes the ability to use the Dpad on PS3 to rewind/forward, or the X button to pause/play (I have to use Start button with all Java based disc, which is dumb as even PS3 popup menu says I can use X and Dpad). I also have the feeling that Java working behind the scenes will make it impossible to ever have any kind of reliable Pan & Scan mode with such discs.

Your disc is fine. Iron Man's BD-Live stuff is borked. I had the EXACT SAME results as you posted above, but at about 11pm last night before I went to bed I gave it one last shot and it downloaded the trivia. The recalled discs were mastering errors and had nothing to do with any of this BD-Live stuff. This sstuff has to do with the BD-Live servers getting their asses kicked.

As best as I can tell, there are two aspects to BD-Live. The first is to just setup the BD-Live infrastructure for the movie title. This works for everyone as far as I can tell. You know it works because for about the first minute or so your WiFi light on your PS3 is flashing constantly. Then it stops flashing and at this point, I think is looking for specific updates to the title which is what's getting hammered and times out. What's funny is that AFTER I had already downloaded the trivia game last night, I booted it up this morning again and it gave me the "you are not connected to the internet" despite the fact that I had already downloaded the trivia game last night.

It will be interesting to see Iron Man BD numbers next week, because I am guessing that a large percentage of those numbers will be the EXACT number of people trying to connect to the BD-Live servers at the same time over the last day or so. lol

Same here with the picture. My friend even leaned over halfway through and said it was like watching it on a crappy LCD because the black levels were so bad. I don't know what on earth was going on there.

Bought the Iron Man BD last night (I had some coupons for BB so my price for Iron Man came out under 12 bucks :D). Anyway, after hearing about some of the hang-ups for the BD, I decided to pop the movie into my PS3 and once it got to the screen with the power core, I probably waited for less than a minute before the main menu came on.

I had my internet settings on the PS3 on.

Does anyone here already have the Thing on BD? What do you think of PQ and AQ? I still have the shitty non anamorphic BD so I guess the upgrade will be great anyway but I'd like to hear some opinions. I am really anticipating this disc becaue I love that movie. :D
I know I've already replied to you, but I've just found a comparison between the BD and the three DVD versions here, complete with direct feed shots. The one in the infirmary is a good one to see the difference in detail, particularly compared to the non-anamorphic ones.

Thanks. That will be a huge upgrade for me and it looks pretty good overall. of cours enot as good as Blade Runner or 2001 but still pretty good. Can't wait for it.

The only thing that sucks is the way they handle the extras compared to the HD DVD.

So what is the official word on Iron Man? Is it now safe to just pick up one up at stores?

It always has been safe. If you have problems playing it on your PS3, turn off the wireless.

And to to add to my HD love-in of Iron Man and Daredevil Blurays yesterday, I just placed a huge order over at Inetvideo. 10 hd-dvd movies for less than $7 a piece after shipping.

anyone picked up LA Confidential? My disc turned up yesterday but haven't gotten around to watching it yet.
Yup, haven't checked it out yet though. It should look great, and the Blu-ray comes with the complete soundtrack on CD which was a nice unexpected bonus.

watched sarah marshall last night. didn't really like knocked up and only kindda liked 40 year old virgin (that might be the only other one I pick up at target this week.. maybe...) loved this one. truly outstanding..

but the one that was amazing, and yeah I know I'm lttp on this.... Nightmare Before Christmas... o.m.g! I still own the super awesome amazing LD limited edition box for it (I own most of the Disney LE lasers). I purchased the original DVD which of course sucked once I got my HDTV and found out it was non-anamorphic. (to be fair, it was the same LD transfer. unfortunately LD transfers quickly fell behind anamorphic 480p DVD transfers) I purchased the Special Edition DVD figuring they HAD to have fixed the transfer... not only was it STILL non-anamorphic but it was still the same below average transfer of the first disc.... ugghh.... I have been waiting for this day a long time. I am generally NOT amazed by HD transfers these days unless they are show stopper movies (I am sure Wall-E will be breathtaking as is Iron Man), but this is one transfer, between the quality of the transfer and the quality of the only previous releases we had access to... that blew me away. I am also happy that I JUST got it, because it is by far one of my favorite halloween and Christmas movies ever. very awesome.

can't wait for sleeping beauty and young frankenstein next week. not expecting much from young frankenstein, but as one of my all time favorite comedies that I've owned on.. umm (VHS, Laser, DVD, SE DVD) 4 different formats it's a forgone conclusion that I am picking it up on Blu.

As expected, the BD Live related features of Iron Man worked perfectly yesterday, everything started/downloaded within seconds.

sunshine. half way through. Had to stop it as its getting late and I like my movies loud. Amazing PQ, this looks so much better than I remember at the cinema. wow.

finished this tonight. A bit of grainy but watching this on Bluray/HD was simply superb. I enjoyed it SO much more.

*MAJOR SPOILERS on sunshine below

When harold flies off into space and hit body hits the ship and explodes into frozen meaty chunks... the detail was just there with the sparkly red bits and amazing to behold

also trey slashed his wrist and on SD I never noticed he did it the right way. Along, not across.

amazing bluray is.

I got When we Left Earth the NASA Missions, and 40 Year Old Virgin, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Knocked Up, yesterday.

quick question:

Should I pick up the first season of the terminator show? what did everyone think of the PQ and AQ. As well as the show itself?

It's up on amazon for 36 bucks which isnt too bad so I could just scoop it up along with some other stuff.

With the possibility of the show being canceled mid season now I would say no.

Is there only a 2 disc edition of Iron man? I see it costs 25$ at Amazon, and hoped for something cheaper :\

(will be my first Blu-Ray! wohoo!) :P

Yes. And that's already $15 cheaper than the MSRP, you won't find much cheaper. If you think $25 is too high you should probably wait a few more years before getting into the Blu-ray market :D

Yeah, I know the prices are around the 20-25 mark - was just hoping :\

Well, I guess I'll have to suck it up, and be verrrrry picky about the movies I'm buying. Probarly will start with Iron man, continue with The Dark Knight and then... we'll see.

It's quite hard to enjoy PS3 games, Blu-Ray movies and going out once in a while when you're 20 and barly have any money...

I don't do this often, but.....

QFT (or restated for emphasis)

Blu-rays are the cheapest they've ever been at this point (well, without thinking back to the wild BOGO wars of HD-DVD/BRD). That being said, obviously they still carry a pretty significant price over movie-only DVD editions. This is EXACTLY like the DVD situation back in 1998-1999.

Like Gary said... if you think the discs cost too much right now, hold off. I mean buy what you want, but know that all the discs are in the $23-27 range. It'll probably be next fall at the earliest that we routinely see discs come in under $20.

FWIW, when Fox launched their first DVD discs in 1998, they carried $34.99 MSRPs for catalog titles like Hope Floats and back then most stores (even Amazon) stayed pretty dang close to MSRP. Disney also launched their animated titles (the ones in the first boxed set) in 1999 at $34.99 MSRP and pretty much going for $29.99-32.99 on most store shelves. So Blu-ray pricing right now is to be expected and will keep going down.

I understand that this is the situation and there's nothing really to do.
Unfourtuantly, I can't sit back and not buy Blu-Ray movies when I have an HDTV and a nice 5.1 setup.

And that's why in time between this and my last post, I placed an order for Iron Man. Shipping hurt A LOT (15$) but... whatever, I just won't buy Resistance (the first one) next month.

Can't wait for it to arrive. I really enjoyd the movie back in the theater.

I will say it's pretty apparent how far prices have come down though. I am REALLY looking forward to Young Frankenstein (should be here on Saturday :) ) and was looking at the thread on the HDD forums.. Didn't realize that when it was first announced in July they stuck it with a $39.99 MSRP. People were going insane about it just two months ago. My credit card was just charged for it now from deepdiscount and it was $26.85. Two months ago it wouldn't have been all that crazy for amazon or deepdiscount to have it for $29.99 or even $31.99-32.99.. So at least prices are still falling a bit going into the holiday season.

oh, and speaking of deepdiscount, for those who live one day standard shipping from chicago (i.e. ground, parcel, etc), they ship their movies for the next week over standard shipping starting Thursday and Friday. I go through phases on buying movies and stuff.. but when I do I ALWAYS order from them. Free shipping on standard and I usually have my movies that are due the following tuesday by like the Friday or Saturday before. :)

Just a Samsung plasma. Not among the best out there for sure, but I liked the picture of it the best among the TV in the same price range back when I got it. It looked way better in darker setting than any comparably priced LCD and it was $500 cheaper than Panny and $1000 than Pioneer. It's not a perfect TV by any means, but the black levels, contrast and colors on it absolutely destroy that of a regular cinema projector. I actually think this TV is capable of stronger colors than much more valued Panasonic and Pioneer TVs from the same period, but it has problems that those two didn't have (more visible dithering, and banding being the most obvious)

ha, didnt think anyone else would care about that one. I accidentally got two, I think i subconsciously ordered a second one for my dad for Christmas. :lol

Israel.
There's an option for 10$ shipping, but it would take between 18 to 32 days for the movie to arrive. with the 15$ shippment, it only takes a week or two.

http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/34886/when-we-left-earth-the-nasa-missions/

There's a very marked difference in video quality throughout this 1.78:1 1080p series, as might be expected from something cobbled together from source material spanning virtually 50 years. All of the contemporary interview segments, as well as the more recent archival footage, look completely crisp, with fine detail and excellent color and saturation. Somewhat surprisingly, even some of the newly restored vintage material looks great, such as Ed White's spacewalk, which crackles with definition and sharpness (compare it in the episode version with the original NASA unrestored version on an extra and you'll be amazed). At other times, the old 16mm and 35mm film elements are just kind of tired looking, with faded color and lots of grain. The historical importance of this footage overrides any momentary quality issues this set may display, however.

Final Thoughts:
I'm not ashamed to admit I got quite emotional several times while watching this brilliant multi-disc set. When We Left Earth managed to make me not just proud to be an American, something that is sometimes not so easy to be in this day and age, but also, more importantly, proud to be a human being, part of a generation that sought to reach beyond itself and start conquering the vast reaches outside of our atmosphere. Dramatically assembled from some very rare NASA footage as well as exemplary contemporary interview footage, When We Left Earth is an awe-inspiring history lesson that will frequently leave you breathless. Highly recommended.

I dont know when I'll be able to sit down and watch the whole thing. Having a roommate now makes it more difficult to just pop anything i want in and sit down and watch.

I'll give impressions though when i do start watching.

Maybe this has been posted, but Borders is offering an in-store "buy 2, get 3rd free" Blu-Ray sale. Their prices typically suck sewage through a straw, but I picked up some films for an average of $20.00 each. The power of instant gratification and all. Who knows, you may do better.

Here's a link to the coupon if anyone feels like going: Borders Coupon. You must be a member to use the coupon (membership is free).

Plus, Klosterman's got a new book. Probably cheaper at B&N, though.

where do I go now?

DVDspot is closing up. is there anywhere else I can use to monitor my collection?
