The HD Movie thread

I'm about to make the HD jump here in the next 2 weeks and I was wondering what service is best for renting and watching HD stuff. I have a PS3 and will be getting a 360 again next month (I still have my gold account).

I saw Netflix is pretty popular and it's not that expensive. Is it better than the apple store?

I'll be buying Blu-ray movies but only for movies that I know I like and have seen.

Netflix is pretty good and has a good Blu-ray selection. PS3 and 360 stores both have growing but limited HD rentals. If you want to buy stuff from the apple store and run it on your HDTV you're going to need AppleTV.

Just go with Netflix, none of the online HD stuff can compare with full uncompressed 1080p that Blu-ray offers.

Watched For A Few Dollars More on cable and it looked really good. I can't wait to own the Sergio Leone westerns on BR, GBU is gonna be epic. I just hope they offer a branching option for the original US release and the extended version.

A lot of these 2.35:1 movies make me wish I went with a 50" set instead of a 42" though.

I monitor my collection by pointing my eyeballs toward the shelf the discs sit on.

o you're clever, but really though my e-peen totally relys on the fact I can point other people towards my collection to remind me of my self worth and awesomisity.

If you have a PS3 or 360 get Netflix.

You not only get blu-rays but you can use their watch instantly service with PlayOn (or soon without it if you have 360) to watch a crap load of movies and tv shows on demand.

Is the Forgetting Sarah Marshall Blu-Ray standalone the same as the one in the Knocked Up/40-Year Old Virgin/Forgetting Sarah Marshall pack? The standalone is a 2 disc release but I don't see anything about 2-discs in the collection. For that matter are all the ones in the collection the same as their standalone counterpart? The collection seems so much cheaper for it to be the same as the standalones.

the 2nd disc for the standalone release is a digital copy. the movie and bonus features are all on a single disc.

CRAP being the operative word there. Almost everything available instantly on Netflix is absolute garbage. That may improve with the recent Starz deal.

If I remember correctly, Matrix was the first DVD to hit 1m units (fall 1999).. I believe. and Godzilla was the first mainstream movie to outsell it's VHS counterpart (something we likely won't see before 1M copies is hit).

Anyone else see this over at The Digital Bits today?

"The Matrix 10th Anniversary"...is that a new one different from the Ultimate Matrix Trilogy?

I hope so. I only want the first movie.

Personally, I'm really excited to hear that Being There is coming to Blu-ray.

Austin Powers better be getting some kind of remastering treatment because that film never looked good. There better be some hidden print of the movie never seen before, because if I buy one more movie that looks like it could have been done on VHS I'm gonna be pissed.

it says 2008 too.

For the "ultimate collector's editions" on the bottom, not the "coming soon" ones listed up top. LOTR BD wont be out this year, count on that. It would have been hyped to hell if it were by now.

not really much to contribute on my end, with the exception that there's a ton of great titles out on blu and there's a ton more coming. i personally don't have netflix by my best friend does, he swears by it. i'm trying to convince my fiancee
ball 'n chain?
to subscribe with me.

congrats on making the jump. like myself and most people i know, once you make the jump you'll kick yourself for taking so long to do so.

Being There is a nice surprise, and it's good to see Amadeus back on the slate, although I doubt I'll bother upgrading either from my DVDs. I assume Wizard of Oz is going to be a new benchmark as far as restorations go...

watched I robot on bluray tonight. I found the PQ to be great but I really didn't think it was that awesome a transfer.. and then I popped in the DVD and... WOAH. I take it all back. DVD looked like crap in comparison to the bluray. It was amazing

might pop in DATomorrow dvd to see how shitty that looks too.

The Ruins
quite nice on Bluray but I'd rate PQ @ 3.5 as it had a lot of softness and the HD quality really brought out how hokey and low rent the CG work on the screaming vines is. It looks like some sort of mobile stretchy filter when they were all meant to be screaming

They'll do the EEs, but probably only after releasing all the theatrical versions first. I'd imagine they'll wait for 2011 when the Hobbit comes out.

That's what I meant.

FINALLY - WB has listened! Yay for being able to finally buy The Matrix on BD without the baggage of the sequels and the wealth of extras I dont care about.

Day one!

Question for all you double dippers - What do you do with your DVD editions?
I'm quite sure that I'll rebuy some titles that I have on DVD, such as Batman Begins and now The Matrix.

I don't see what I can do with the DVD's, but throwing them seems a bit harsh.
Maybe in a dark closet?

(Iron Man shipped last night. Come to me!!!)

sell most of them 12 months ago.

I kept Disney stuff that will take ages to fully release, Ghibli stuff likewise, and some other select titles that may not be out for awhile. the rest I sold and will rebuy on bluray.

I will rebuy less on bluray though. I had over 600 DVDs and that wasn't really necessary. Although I consider DVD to be my stopgap solution - bluray is potentially the real 'archival' quality. I don't see any need for anything more than 1080p/24 and lossless audio. even digital cinemas use pretty much 1080p (2k is damn close)

I bought Iron Man from Best Buy today and when I got home, I discovered that it had a new UPC sticker over the old one, and there was a new seal over a sliced seal. Once I opened it up, the disc one had fingerprints all oer it. What. The. Fuck?

The UPS deal is that the discs were recalled before sale to fix an issue and were then re-issued in the same box with a new UPS on top of the old one. I think they're all probably like that, although mine didn't have fingerprints all over it or the seal thing.

So, did someone from Best Buy slice them open, put in a new disc, reseal, and sell for new? Dirty if true.

I dunno possibly, the fingerprints and broken seal sound fishy. You may want to try taking it back for a new one and see if it's the same deal. Or as long as it works okay no worries...

Im selling off all the dvds that have been replaced unless they are super rare dvd's or ones that have awesome casing. people are still crazy about dvd's especially for 5 bucks a piece.
