The HD Movie thread

here are my comments from my viewing this weekend, from my young frankenstein appreciation thread

-------------------------------------------------
ok, Blu-ray review time. I was really concerned that the age of the film would prevent the movie from really looking much different than the previous prints we've had, not to mention the anamorphic disc from the boxed set which actually looked quite good. Fortunately that is not the case here. The print is INCREDIBLY clean with very little dust, scratches, etc. What there is a ton of on screen, and even more noticeable in HD, is film grain. We know Mel Brooks shot it intentionally this way, and it is heavily prevalent on the screen.. It is almost distracting, but it is very obviously true film grain, not digital artifacting, compression, or a filter. Just that before hi-def it was never this apparent.

The movie is great obviously. They offer an isolated score on one of the soundtracks and you can really see the emphasis that the soundtrack had on this movie. Most people agree that this is Brooks' most cinematic movie, and a lot of that can be attributed to him working to emulate the classic monster movies which were themselves very cinematic. The soundtrack is the same case, with a very obvious homage to classic horror scores while never working against the comedy.

I popped up some of the picture in picture commentaries and I don't know if anything in here will be new for most die hard fans of the movie.. it seems much is recycled either from the previous DVDs or just from the information we've already had. But for people who are just finding out about the movie or maybe aren't quite as nuts about it, the commentaries and PiP tracks are a great way to see how awesome the production was on this film.

So the disc is a major score.. both for die hard fans and newbies. About the only complaint is that it carries the typical Fox tax and online still goes for about $27. :( Still, we all know there are movies from Fox (sigh...) that are still worth it even for that extra couple of dollars more, and I would say without hesitation that Young Frankenstein is one of those movies. Not only that, but this edition is loaded and looks amazing. I find it very hard to believe that there will ever be another version of Young Frankenstein worth replacing this one over.

to be fair, I actually agree with costanza on most movies.... extremely odd considering our vastly different music tastes. Knocked Up was kind of meh but alright, 40 year old virgin was ok, Superbad was outstanding and Sarah Marshall was pretty good.

I completely agree with all of that except I would say that FSM was fucking perfect.

Oh man, Suzie Templeton's stop-motion Peter & the Wolf was apparently released on HD-DVD in Germany at one point (Recently? No one seems to know) and I'd love to get a copy, but there's no way I can justify nearly $50 for a half-hour short. I've watched it on PBS HD a few times and absolutely adore the thing, so this is difficult to pass up... :(

Here's a clip if anyone wants to check it out.

I say buy it. It really is an amazing short film and if I owned an HD player still I'd drop the cash on it in a hearbeat.

Waaait a minute, weren't these [James Bond] remasters criticized when released a few years back? It sounds like the Blu-Rays are using those too. :(

Sounds like the Blu versions are, at least in some cases, improved/altered transfers:

Bond gets a two-year Blu-ray makeover

I spoke to Mike Inchalik, chief operating officer at Lowry Digital, whose team of technicians have spent the last two years painstakingly remastering and restoring the 20 pre-Casino Royale Bonds, frame by frame.

...The films had previously been remastered for DVD, but Blu-ray is such a big step up in terms of detail-visibility that the Lowry team had to start from scratch – literally, in the case of Dr. No.

“Blu-ray is a very discriminating format, so you have to make sure the films are up to it,” explains Inchalik. “Dr No was a pretty low-budget movie, and it shows in places. There were lots of ‘gate-hairs’, scratches and problems with principle photography that we had to take out”.

still too many HD-dvd backlogs hitting bluray slowly (as it should) right now but I'm looking forward to next year when the catalogue refreshes with all new stuff.

GHOST + TRUMAN SHOW + EVENT HORIZON all just announced for preorder on amazon. I own TS+EH but might double dip. And ghost, well, I'm not sure but its a classic!

Sadly not the ones I most want besides The Thing. I want the Bourne Trilogy and Clerks 2.

I keep saying this: I want Moulin Rouge on blu-ray.

actually, I want this as well. :) I watched it on dvd the other day and I think it will look stupendos on bluray. Can't wait for BAHZ LUHRMAN'S Australia

I wouldn't mind these:

Artificial Intelligence
NEMO
INCREDIBLES
Ghibli
2046
FIGHTCLUB
zoolander
magnolia
LifeAquatic/Darjeeling/Tennambaums
American Beauty
BacktotheFuture
STARWARS
Passion of the Christ (just so I can sit there and laugh at the HD gorefest)

I've said I'd try not to buy backlog and I'll try to keep to this policy but damn if there aren't a few I won't double dib for.

loves it, and to be frank, i'd much rather watch the notebook or a walk to remember than any shitty romantic comedy with that fucking piece of human garbage that is Matthew McConaughey. god damn i hate that motherfucker.

what did McConaughey ever do to you to warrant such vitriol?

I figured some of you would be getting it for your wife, its just not a normal movie you see on high def.

any recommendations for today guys? Im planning on picking up two movies today one which will be young frankenstein, but the other I dunno. Just start tossing out random titles and maybe one will stick.

I cannot stand him too. I don't understand how he still headline films with modest budgets (sahara/foolsgold) when he is really terrible.

zodiac on blu

I thought it was really boring myself but its nichey and I know some people really dug it. I think its finchers worst film myself. Yes (worse than alien3)

oh don't hate on zodiac. Find another film like that with that kind of atmosphere and depth and come find me because that movie was fan-fucking-tastic.

Just saw on CAG that Circuit City is throwing in the Matrix trilogy for free next week if you buy the Samsung BDP1500 for $249.99. Anyone plan to take advantage of that?

Agreed. I haven't watched Alien 3 (even though I own it), but I can't imagine it being worse than Panic Room.
Never say never.

OK so quality wise they're probably around equal but if you take broken hearts and crushed dreams into account then Alien 3 is by far the worst of the two.

My copy of This is England just shipped. Will be interesting to see how it looks in HD. From an artistic point of view, it's simply fantastic. Not sure if the transfer from the 19mm or whatever people talked about will be fantastic in picture quality regards though.

Movie is fantastic as well, if you haven't seen it. Do your self a favor.

I would have never thought about that movie in HD. Fantastic film, though. I'm in the US it was recommended to me by someone in the UK. I learned a lot looking stuff up after watching it. I had no idea there were so many types of skinheads. I'd be interested to hear about the quality.

watched Sleeping Beauty with the Profile 1.1 commentary on. I am a major fan of these PiP commentaries. Yeah you lose a lot of the picture (and Sleeping Beauty is a little distracting because the images are all over the screen) but the assumption is that you are watching it in this mode specifically for the bonus view commentary, so it's understandable.

the quality of the picture is astounding. It makes me super excited for Snow White (hopefully) next fall. Snow White previously set the benchmark for most amazing restoration ever. actually scratch that... it may even still beat the HD-DVD of Casablanca. I know they remastered snow white in 2K so there is still a ton of info there for HD plus some.

so funny how we looked at DVD back in the early days as "archival" versions of some of these important movies, and now looking at just how much more amazing they CAN look when restored right on Blu-ray.

Are they really only going to release 2 a year?? It'll take forever to get to the good stuff.

wait what else was released under the platinum moniker this year? I really hope pinnochio is soon to come out before anything else.

I like the Notebook, that's good news that it's coming soon. That being said, I will be purchasing that one on Amazon. Maybe get that one with Zodiac.

pinnochio is shown on Sleeping Beauty and says Spring 2009 (70th Anniversary).

As far as the "2 per year", remember that that is not the total number of animated releases per year. that is the number of platinum releases per year. Disney currently only has 11 platinum movies out, and judging by the mentions made by Disney, different movies will be considered for Platinum now, meaning some might be released in a "demoted" state such as 101 Dalmatians, Jungle Book, etc given their recent release status.

Maybe its because I watched it at like 4 in the morning but I enjoyed it and laughed my ass off many times. I don't see how anyone that liked Knocked up and Superbad could NOT like this movie.
i loved knocked up and superbad.. i just thought forgetting sarah marshall was cornier and the jokes were not as funny..

maybe the first two spoiled me

I bought it last night, but I won't get a chance to watch it until this weekend.

I was handed this clock at checkout. It was truly a WTF moment. I had been unapologetically looking forward to Disney's first Platinum BR release for a while, but that moment made me realize that probably 90% of the people watching this movie will be pre-teen girls. I don't know how long it's been since I was that embarrassed by a purchase.
