The HD Movie thread

Hi guys,

So, I still don't have a surround system. Any ideas what I should get? Not too expensive, I'm no sound freask so cheap things will be enough. I do however have a few requirements;

7.1 Support
HDMI 1.3a (That's what PS3 have right?)
1080p of course

Basically something that take full advantage of what PS3 supports as cheap as possible. :)

So last night I almost went nuts and ordered 6-9 blurays from play.com's 3 for 2 offer, but I couldnt bring myself to do it just yet, as the price was close to buying a new xbox 360 or something!! but I still have 6 in my basket...so tempted and I suspect I will have another long internal debate with myself tonight. I hate how HD, my PS3 and my Sony Bravia makes me want to buy things I never would have considered on DVD.

So here are the candidates, thumbs up or down on any of them? Any you feel particularly strongly about?

Transformers
The Nightmare Before Christmas
The Orphanage
Cars
House of Flying Daggers (Ziyi Zhang in HD *drool*)
Pan's Labyrinth

Contenders:

Beowulf
Spiderman Trilogy
Troy (I hear the bluray looks great)
Ronin

I even considered papp I hated like I am Legend or I Robot

Transformers - yes!!
The Nightmare Before Christmas - yes!
The Orphanage - meh. Lousy payoff. I don't think its revisitable at all. rental
Cars - Personally hate the subject/art - get ratatouille instead
House of Flying Daggers (Ziyi Zhang in HD *drool*) - PQ not great.

Pan's Labyrinth - amazing/nuanced/beautiful. yes

Contenders:

Beowulf - awesome
Spiderman Trilogy - I only have movie 3 on blu and its amazing
Troy (I hear the bluray looks great) haven't watch

Ronin - haven't seen this.

I even considered papp I hated like I am Legend or I Robot

I have I AM LEGEND and I robot and both are sensational viewing on HD. I thought my reviewing of Irobot... well, bluray actually made the sequences exciting to watch again.

ronin would be the next closest thing to actually getting French Connection in HD. DO IT. DO IT NOW!

p.s. ronin is an outstanding movie if you like iron curtain-like spy thrillers that aren't quite as cute and sophisticated as Bond (re: throats slashed, no oil slicks in the car chases, no clearly delineated good or bad guys, etc).

Cars I believe isn't on play's offer, get 3:10 to Yuma. If they finally added it to it then oh snap. \o/

Anyone know what Incredible Hulk is like? Its released here next week. (before Iron Man)

EDIT: Cars and shit load of other stuff got added to the offer. I just picked it up with 3:10 and Enchanted (don't ask)

I recommend Transformers though, I think its brilliant with a surround system.

:D I would've so bought Enchanted if I didn't hate the ending.

I hate the way she ends up with that guy, the prince crossed worlds and went through loads of shit cos he loved her and she SUPPOSEDLY loved him at first but then oh guess what she's going home with another man and seducing him. PFFT. slut. she's hot though.

she was looking for her true love. phillip was not her true love. the morale of the story was (IMHO) that sometimes love isn't what you might expect it to be.

then she shouldn't have agreed to marry him in the first place! For me, it feels like a Sex and the City version of a Disney romance which tried to stay somewhat true to its "true love" traditions but kind of failed in my eyes. Other than clashing with my values on tru elove though, decent film and looks great.

I bought enchanted because its very very good. funny as hell to boot. Actually watched it about 3-4 days ago on bluray.

on why you didn't like the film - but that's the WHOLE film in essence.

the whole point was that the "fairy tale" love (no dates/happily ever after), gisele learns isn't real when she met patrick demsey. She falls in love with someone she got to know. and they had chemisty lada lada and then she realises she absolutely does not love the prince. Her one true love wasn't the prince.
I thought it was very awesome and moving.

Enchanted is the best live action Disney movie (well live action Disney movie aimed at families) in YEARS. It really has a old school Disney vibe to it that has been missing for a long long time.

enchanted was a postmodern look at the happily ever after mythos of past disney films. I agree. Its very funny too. and amy adams doing her fantasy hand thing cracks me up.

The ONE thing I didn't like about the bluray and its... not the blurays fault but I was hoping the animation at the start would be full screen :(

Wait, so is the choice between these or an Xbox 360? If so, it's a no brainer. Get yourself a 360. You can always rent these movies, plus they are guaranteed to be in other sales, most likely even better than this one. I'm not even sure how there's a debate in your mind.

Also, I saw Iron Man for the first time. Meh, certainly didn't live up to the hype. Looked great during the daytime scenes, and the sound certainly highlighted how cheap my subwoofer is.

Someone mentioned Eternal Sunshine. I saw the HD DVD version over the weekend. It's not a movie that benefits a ton from HD, though there are a few standout scenes and it's clearly superior to the dvd. The sound doesn't really stand out either. At least it fared better than Lost in Translation. That film needs to be redone before it goes to Blu Ray. The HD DVD I own is clearly the best version of the film, but some scenes are ridiculously soft and grainy. Thankfully, some of the Tokyo scenes look fantastic.

And boy was I relieved with the Netflix price increase. I almost choked when I read the email subject line, but then I calmed down when I read the amount. I certainly expected worse. So long as their availability on Blu Rays gets better, this is a steal anyway.

Its not a choice, but I use these kind of comparisons to justify my expenditure. i.e. are these blurays really worth as much as a 360? of course not, so why the hell am I buying them??

Incidentally, I just ordered Transformers, The Night Before Christmas and Cars.

Almost bought another 3 but decided to be good and spread my purchases out some more.

just buy them 1 at a time, then you don't hit your 'crazy money' barrier ,but still end up spending more :P

I do that though. each bluray is ok price on its own, but put a few in the basket and it really adds up quickly.

BTW, any impressions on Band of Brothers? Considering getting this, but it is expensive. Loved the TV series but never seen it in HD. wonder if the BBC will ever rebroadcast it in HD?

they were between a rock and a hard place on that. in the theater the animated part was not as wide, and then when it went live action it literally expanded the screen. Is the same thing on the widescreen home release, but the effect is that during the animated sequences there is a frame around the picture. Still not that bad in HD. I would hate to see it on a normal DVD player though on a 4:3 set.... ouch.

Its a standard Disney fairy tale.

Its only an hour and 15 minutes. Short and sweet so the kiddies dont lose attention.
The climax at the end was pretty intense though.

One of my favorite Disney films up there with Beauty and the Beast & Lion King. However, it's not a musical like the others though there are songs. Enchanted reminded me a lot of it including the first song and the similarities of Narissa & Maleficent.

considering when it was made and that attention spans didn't start wandering until only about 20 years ago I doubt it was for that reason. All of the early Disney hand-animated films are short like that, and probably for the reason that they were hand-animated.

ok? I wasnt implying its short because its aimed at kids, just stating a fact that it is short and therefore more likely to hold kids attention now.

yeah, Iron Man, PQ-wise was a mixed bag. The cave scenes had horrible black levels...it looked very gray and washed out.

Since it will be my first Blu ray movie, I hope I won't get dissapointed :\

I thought Iron Man looked great personally. What kind of display are people using that are complaining about the cave scenes? Maybe it's because I haven't bought a blu-ray for awhile and got used to my cable box... I dunno but I had no complaints.

The iron man blu ray is definite reference material so I'm not sure about these problems people are speaking of. Maybe tune your tv a bit and you can get better picture quality aye?

As of today I picked up young frankenstein (finally found it) and afro samurai season 1. Dunno about the quality of afro, but I bought it because I had some extra cash on my gift card and it was only 20 bucks. Anyone have any thoughts on it?

Reeeeally? If the [Canadian Silent Hill] re-release is any good, I might have to consider picking it up (assuming that Canada is part of Region A as I expect that they are).
Turns out that Canada's new Alliance Silent Hill disc is simply the U.S. disc in different packaging. It's too bad, especially since a special edition Blu-Ray was just released in the UK in the past week with a better encode.

Sleeping Beauty 50th Anniversary Platinum Edition: Stunning. This is a great movie perfected. Perhaps only the first few audiences watching the film in major venues in 1958 ever saw it in such pristine condition, and it is certain the audio performance they heard did not match this. Sleeping Beauty is plausibly Disney's pinnacle achievement in the art of animation and this is the only home video release that does the film justice.

Band of Brothers is among the few Blu-Rays I must own if I were to be limited to a few. Considering the price on amazon, it's a fucking steal. The Matrx Collection is like $30 more and that's just 3 movies versus 10+ hours of amazing Band of Brothers.

If you're asking about the blu-ray transfer specifically, then I'm not sure to be honest. I just assume that it'll be good given the people behind it. People are saying that the Japanese import looks incredible.

heh.. glad you liked it.. but regarding the bolded part of the quote, watch the supplemental material :P sleeping beauty was distributed to capable theaters with a 6 track magnetic audio track. 4 fronts and 2 sides. the soundtrack had to be mixed in Germany because it was the only place the had the equipment to pull it off. and considering this soundtrack was mastered from the same soundtrack I'm talking about, it sounded pretty damn good to some audiences back in 1959. :)

Never underestimate how far ahead of the curve Walt was in regards to the movie industry. I would honestly say no one changed the technical aspect of movie making more than he did, and George Lucas isn't even a close second.

edit - and lest I not back up what I'm talking about, some of Disney's movie firsts:

First synchronized sound in an animated short (Steamboat Willie 1928)
First color animated short (Silly Symphonies 1933)
First animated feature (Snow White 1937)
First use of stereophonic sound in a feature (Fantasia 1940)
First use of multi-plane camera (Bambi 1942)
First movie done in widescreen (Sleeping Beauty 1959. It was released 6 years after the first cinemascope movie, however began production in widescreen before The Robe was released and all records show it was started in techniarama)

and apparently according to the sleeping beauty features, also had the first ever widescreen showing on television (lol.. black bars) and first ever stereophonic sound on television (through additional use of am and fm radios).

I'm pretty psyched that the 360 is officially getting the Blu Ray treatment. This should push the Blu Ray format here in NA a good deal. My guess is that it won't have a totally reworked motherboard, right? That would mean no next gen sound, which for me is a no no. We'll see, but at least one friend of mine will be jumping into BD once that console comes out.

That console will likely be the second best selling BD console after Ps3, even though I suspect it'll be an Elite-type offering at a $399 or so price.

Also, I saw Run, Fatboy, Run last night. It got mixed reviews, but I don't know why. I really liked it, and so did my wife. The video was pretty clean and sharp, and it had 7.1 sound, though it's a comedy and didn't really have too much pop in the audio department. Will definitely pick it up once it gets on a sale.

So, I still don't have a surround system. Any ideas what I should get? Not too expensive, I'm no sound freask so cheap things will be enough. I do however have a few requirements;

I got the Onkyo 606 and I'm very happy with it. It can play the lossless tracks, which is the important thing.

are we talking about the X-Bit Labs thing which MS already denied?

Nope. And maybe I shouldn't have said officially. It's certainly not announced. Just read this piece on Yahoo News:

Microsoft is raising Xbox 360 forecasts in Japan amid rumors Sony might drop the price of its PlayStation 3 even more. Meanwhile, Microsoft is planning to release an Xbox 360 with a Blu-ray drive, putting it on more equal digital-media footing with its main rival.

The article is about Home vs NXE, but they mention that in passing. Kinda like its a given.

yeah, everything over the past couple of days has stemmed from the x-bit labs article. I get that companies deny rumors even when they're true for marketing purposes, but I don't see MS flat out saying "We have no plans for one, don't see the market going that way, and are invested in our download service" only to turn around a month or three later to say "Here is our blu-ray drive".

not saying it won't happen, but very unlikely at this point.

I'm not sure where the "keep dreaming" part is relevant. Keep dreaming even though I already have a Blu Ray player? Keep dreaming because having another BD player (and likely a very popular one) on the market would be a bad thing?

Face it, a Blu Ray player on the Xbox 360 would be fantastic news for the format, and for us fans of the format who want the format to continue to grow and thrive. The only people who would have issues with that are......well, you know.
