I dont recall there being that many red stop signs in any of the Bond movies.

Is this one of those deals where on his screen the pics come up, but for all of us we get the red signs, or can he see those and just won't bother editing his post? :lol

I'm trying to figure out why the movie has Guantanamo Bay in the title if they're in that place for less than 5 minutes. :lol

Hah, I get one red stop sign, I'll just edit the post. Not worth it re-hosting the images.

Ok, i can't seem to edit the post. Link doesn't show up. W/e.

Pretty much. :lol

I want Poltergeist.

When is Meet Joe Black coming to BD? I watched it last night and it was pretty captivating. It's out on HD-DVD but not even on the radar for BD.

universal has a TON of catalog HD DVDs out that aren't anywhere on their blu radar. Then again they've only been releasing blu-rays for less than 3 months and have a whole summer season to worry about not to mention that they probably don't want to take sales away from. also remember that they put u control stuff in like every movie and it has to be converted to BD-J, BonusView and BD-Live.

My guess would be to expect to start seeing their HD DVD converts beginning in late winter.

Here is the total list of HD DVDs not yet on Blu. You can see Uni has 127 HD DVDs they need to catch up on... it may take them a little while. :P

Picked up Shawshank Redemption today on Blu-Ray. Its a very nice (AVC)transfer of a fantastic film.
Suprised its out in EU before US, usually the other way around.

Only disappointing thing is that the soundtrack is only Dolby Digital 5.1, still its a 640kp version instead of 384kb from DVD.

This weekend I grabbed Sinbad separately and also got both other movies netflixed (I am expecting they are coming out probably in a short while).

Sinbad's quality is outstanding. Well, let me preface that. It is outstanding as LONG AS YOU KNOW what you are getting into. These were NOT big budget movies. To make matters worse, because of all of the optical effects and stop motion inserted into live action, there are obviously parts where the actual pristine negatives themselves were already worn just due to tons of cutting and compositing. What this means is that there is HEAVY grain in the film from the low budget and film stock used and there is visible wear on the film especially during the stop motion sequences. It's not because they got a bad print or didn't bother remastering it... this is how the movie looks. So with that preface in place, the movie(s) looks outstanding. Just don't expect it to look like Iron Man or even Nightmare Before Christmas. Of course the alternative is to DNR the hell out of the movie which would give it that smooth bright look, but on a movie like this DNR would cost all of the amazingly intricate work Harryhausen's company put into the miniatures, so it is wonderful to see Sony left that intact, grain and all.

The other two movies (It Came From Beneath the Sea and Earth vs. the Flying Saucers). The actual quality of the movies is pretty much identical to above except that overall the prints are a tiny more worn just due to age. Still, this is the BEST these movies have ever looked and are a dramatic leap in quality over the DVDs. The colorization process on these is on par with 20M Miles. You either prefer it or you don't. Personally I feel the colorization process actually brings the movies up to a level close to similarly budgeted technicolor movies. I'd go so far as to say I PREFER the colorized versions, and this is coming from someone who has seen ALL of these movies dozens of times in B&W dating all the way back to shock theater on sunday afternoons on our local independent station during the early 80's. My nostlgia is still for the b&w versions and I have watched the b&w version of 20M Miles, but we've (my daughter, niece and myself) actually watched the colored version a couple of times and I have had to watch the b&w version by myself just once so far.

yeah, a longish post, but these movies are kind of confusing given the quality of the actual film used and available and the colorization process on 3 out of 4 in the set.

Awesome thanks for the post!

Ill probaly just pick up the collection sometime down the road

I just bought 'Mongol' today cant wait to watch it!

Oooo! Impressions when you have a chance!

Speaking of, when does
Friday the 13th: The Remake w/o Kane Hodder or anything good so I probably won't like it and I'll view it with my arms folded and my brow wrinkled out of contempt while I eat popcorn from my Friends Lap come out?

heh, i'm watching it on TV in canada right now

Iron Man is here!
Didn't watch the movie yet, but I jumped between scenes and stopped on the jet chase one. To my suprise, I'm quite sure that the picture was great. Everything was... sharp. I think that's the best way to describe it. I'm impressed.

Actually, while writing this post I'm getting more impressed. I watched the DVD version of V for Vendetta on my PS3 a few days ago (so it upscales) and come to think of it, the PQ didn't scratch the one of Iron Man on BD.

I'll check the difference again soon. I must be sure :P

Come to think of it, even if the differece ain't that big, Blu ray isn't THAT much more expensice than a DVD. So when a movie you don't own on DVD, it's a no brainer to buy it on Blu.

I know most of you will look at this post and think "yeah... we know that", but I just wanted to share.

Edit: Booted up V and Iron Man back to back. They're uncomparable. V is no match to Iron Man. Or in other words - DVD is no match to BD

SPEEDRACER

HOLYCOW. THAT WAS AMAZING. best looking bluray experience by a country mile. I already sort of knew what I was getting into having seen this at the cinema but it just looked so freaking amazing. PQ is like 11/10. This is the ultimate HighDef experience, and as weird as this sounds, when the final race was taking place and at the moment of SPEED'S epiphany with the visuals going mad + flashbacks happening. I literally teared up with excitement. I just finished watching it and I'm thinking about watching it again tomorrow.

Also never saw the credits in the cinema - tend to leave but the musis/credit was a visual treat as well.

FREAKING AMAZING.

So, just because I'm interested to know, what causes you to write MOVIETITLEHERE when you discuss them? It has to take more effort to do that than to just write it normally, right?

Being There coming on February 3rd with deleted scenes, outtakes and an alternate ending that are all exclusive to the Blu-ray version. I hate the artwork:

Good news, I'll consider picking it up. I have the DVD but I recall the transfer being poor. Yeah, the box sucks.

Is there a site or review that tells if there is a difference between the blu and hd-dvd versions of American Gangster?
Not quality wise but content wise?

edit: why yes it is :|

Picked up the Target Indy 4 Blu-ray earlier today. The packaging and book are awesome. I liked the movie, so I'm mostly just looking forward to see how good the transfer is. Hopefully I can squeeze it in tonight before the debate.

had a chance to watch poltergeist.... With all of the complaining and back and forth that happens in the community on old movies I seem to always forget just how gorgeous some of the better HD transfers of older movies can look. Warner really needs to congratulate themselves on this release, and the TrueHD track is an excellent representation of the original mix... I was able to grab it at Target for $22.95 if anyone is interested.

Also have to admit between Indy and Poltergeist, I really enjoy the book packaging. I don't care so much about uniform cases as I do just uniform sizes. The books are a great way to replace probably my biggest pet peeve from the early days of DVD.. the production notes on screen. :\ I love the production notes, but the concept of putting them on screen in big type and advancing through them.. :( I would much rather have them in a book like this, especially if it ends up being the same size on my shelf. And for any Indy fans, ESPECIALLY the ones who like Crystal Skull (I did), the Target version should be the only version you buy. Very well packaged.

I know I'm not the only one who is interested in Drumline. It's going to look and hopefully sound amazing with a 7.1 surround option. It's one I've actually been waiting for for awhile.

a new Criterion release went up recently, El Norte. So out of their announced pre-releases, 3 of them are getting Blu-ray releases.. Not bad.

Also kind of an older article (3 weeks) on what is involved in not only a criterion remaster, but also the problems associated with just porting over existing DVDs (hint, the actual remastering of the HD master is done in SD :\ )

Both of which can be found in the existing Criterion thread... :)

This turned up in the post today. None of the shops in town have even had it in but I got a Play.com voucher for my birthday so put it to good use :D

I haven't had a chance to watch it yet and probably won't until the weekend, but I found a review from a Norwegian site. Google translation:

Now I have no good references to go to, as I never saw the film on DVD, but such additional material as it is by a clip from 1985 that gives a certain picture of how the image was at the time. And with it, I would say that we have a good vanvittig transition to Blu-ray. The colors and detail are so good that they almost can hamle up with brand new movies, but of course as it appears some weaknesses, too. Lighting destroy in a few of the more dark moments, which then results in an odd sort level. Next to this as it appears some small items of Grums on the light blue sky far in the background when we are us out in the open air. The standard is that the image presented in is also 2.40:1 widescreen with 1080p resolution and then a nice upgrade to a film that is grown to be over 20 years old.
Sounds like a fairly typical 80s Blu-ray transfer, but as long as it's the best the film has looking I'll take it :D

Is it just the design on the disc that's messed up, or it's entirely the wrong film? If so...Wow. First the Iron Man BD was messed up and now this.

People in that thread said it was entirely the wrong film. Looks like the fixed versions are already showing up to stores but I bet it's undershipped.

I saw Harold and Kumar yesterday. Looked fine, sound was overkill (DTS HD MA 7.1) for this movie. I'm trying to figure out why the movie has Guantanamo Bay in the title if they're in that place for less than 5 minutes. :lol

It was dumb fun at times, but just plain dumb in other spots. Neil Patrick Harris saved this movie from being utter garbage.
What? NPH is fine but H&K are hilarious on their own. And I love the movies for no other fact that they don't have a black or white or stereotypical minority character as their stars. Good shit.

Hilarious, considering you're getting the better Hulk movie.

Oh snaps.

I guess this would be true if you bought the godawful anglee sleepfest and found a copy of incredible hulk inside instead. Buying incredible hulk and recieving ang lee instead would be like going in to the hospital to give birth and coming out having had an accidental abortion.

I got a chance to sit in on a quality-control screening of their restoration of Wong Kar-Wai's Chungking Express. A scene in a crowded marketplace seemed to jump off the screen, and the surround sound perfectly placed the bustling sounds of the market behind me while keeping the dialogue front-and-center. I felt like I was in a theater in Hong Kong, watching the first, perfect print of the movie when it was first released. It was breathtaking.

I must have this now... November is too far away :(

bah, purchased POTC 1 from Amazon in their 3 for 2 offer - but it suffers from the bad framing problem.

I know Disney US offers a disc replacement program but can't find ANY information about a similar program happening in Europe of the UK.

Any ideas? I've tried emailing Amazon but there isnt much they can do, any new disc they ship out is potentially going to suffer from the same problem and a "keep sending until I find one that works" idea isn't feasible!

bloody disney, I bet they shipped all their crap blurays to Europe in the hope no one here cares enough. it feels like disney here hasn't even acknowledged the problem.

Checked out those Bond pics posted on the last page - same menus and everything from the 2006 UEs. Weak ass effort from Sony.

Also, Futureshop has Sin City listed as coming out on BD next week. Is this true? I havent heard so much as a peep about the release, nor have I seen any reviews.

Sin City and From Dusk Til Dawn, actually. Different distributor in Canada than the US, and they wanted to get these out before their rights expired. I know quite a few people have gotten shipping notice on both from Amazon.ca so they're definitely being released.

Got my Incredible Hulk BD today and just finished watching it. I saw it for the first time and I liked it way more than the Ang Lee movie although it's still far from perfect. There even is s uff the Ang Lee movie did better, like portraying the inner conflict of Banner. PQ and AQ is top notch so if that if you like this movie there is no reason to not get.

I guess it's also nice to get all the movies that lead up to the Avengers movie. :D

You can still get a replacement from Disney even if you live in Europe (with no european subtitles). I live in Sweden, and it arrived in 3 days. Didn't even need to send my bad copy to them.
