UK Battlestar Complete looks like it might have non-shit packaging...

Got my BSG set in the mail today. I was afraid that Amazon wouldn't package it well enough, but it arrived in perfect shape.

My God, this thing's over the top packaging makes it huge. I think most of us would have foregone the plastic cylon and "pop-up" case to have something that would actually fit in a rack. Ridiculous packaging aside, it's am impressive set. PQ is what I expected (I have the HD version of S1), but the extras are just unreal. It's going to take months to wade through all the goodies they put in this set.

All in all, well worth the 200 bucks.

*EDIT* The UK version looks like they got the better end of the packaging deal from the above post. Not sure WTF they were thinking making the US version the way they did. Must be some assumption we like plastic figures and elaborate case designs that dwarf the actual BD case dimensions. The actual seasons are packaged in boxes that are normal BD height, but are made of a somewhat flimsy cardboard. May have to invest in some multi-disc cases and come up with some custom covers. Then I can just put the behemoth that is the original package in storage.

Problem is that New Line is now facing some legal issues which I'm pretty sure have not been addressed that may end up with them loosing Hobbit.

Their creative accounting cooked the books to make it appear that the movies didn't actually make a profit, thus the Tolkien estate doesn't get any royalties. This is the exact same thing Jackson sued New Line over.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120737/news#ni0881562

Something tells me New Line will settle, because if it goes to court, they're going to have a really hard time convincing a judge and jury that those movies broke even after a near $3 billion worldwide box office gross (not counting DVD sales).

Hellboy 2 as my next purchase confirmed :D

Fair warning: Hellboy 2 is alost the exact opposite of Pan's Labyrinth. Visually stunning and looks great on Blu, but even that wasn't enough for me to properly finish that piece of shit film.

Okay you are officially insane. Hellboy 2 is one of the best comic book adaptions out there.

It can be a fantastic comic book adaption...Still doesn't stop it from being a shitty movie. :lol

So quick question, I'm considering buying Last Emperor and Chungking Express still

I saw someone mention the difference earlier Last Emperor, Is it really better to pick up the DVD version over the BluRay?

And if I get the BluRay of Chungking, Any drastic difference like Last Emperor

Not a fan of the sleeve. Just more likely to scratch the disk.
Pretty hard to scratch Blurays with something as innocent as a sleeve...

shintoki:

Chungking on Bluray is amazing, looks and sounds sooo good.

Of interest to some people, The Brothers Bloom (awesome) hits the same day, but as a rental-exclusive. No retail copies of that one until 2010.
Fixed. I'm pissed that it's gonna take so long for it to come out on BD though,

Just got my BSG boxset and WHOLLY SHIT is the packaging ass.

The box itself is attractive and will surely call attention on any shelf, but the flimsy cardboard disc holders are GARBAGE. Also, there is no episode listing anywhere, so finding a specific disc to insert for a particular episode or special feature will require a lot of trial and error.

The inclusion of the Cylon figure is just totally unnecessary and garish, at least it sits in a quasi coffin on top of the box that is mostly hidden from the naked eye on a shelf, but I bought into this for an organized and cohesive trove of Battlestar High-Def goodness. This layout is amateurish and unnecessary.

Long as it's the Criterion release. Euro Chungking is terrible, they really screwed it up :(

I was just about to order it (it's region free BTW) but thanks to you I won't :lol

Here is the euro box. I'm going to buy it insted... I hope it's better than the US box.

Here's a tidbit for anyone that cares:

All studios cook the books. Its called negative amortization. Films never make a "profit" no matter how successful. Costs from other productions that have lost money are put onto the films that make money so that the studio never has to pay points on the backend. If you ever get into a studio deal, don't EVER let them try to sell you points on the backend, cause you'll never see a dime. (Sure this is common for gaffers lol) This has happened forever in the film industry and will continue until the end of days.

Euro box seems much better. Fridge layout and plastic disc holders look far more reliable, plus the little booklet will help the user figure out what the fuck disc shit is printed on.

Tracked down basically the last BSG boxset on Bluray in all of the Toronto area, and am happy (as I'm sure the quality on the discs will be amazing once I pop them in)....

but holy fuck, the packaging is monstrous ass. Aesthetically, physically, logically terrible ass. Anyone who opened this piece of shit knows what I'm talking about.

I'm so disappointed. The first 'fold' of each flimsy cardboard season holder was bent inward in an identical way, so the interior's ass quality is further butchered.

What the fuck. I was hoping for something beautiful inside.

We deserved better for $249 CDN.

Speaking of bad packaging decisions...

More here. :lol
:lol

Textbook case of a decent idea, with awful execution.

BSG box is really dumb, but the content is great. I keep all of my discs in a binder anyway, so no big loss.

But still, it's pretty lame.

They actually put it in a cardboard box??? They culdn't put it in a plastic case with a slip cover?

REALLY?
Well, it's a pizza box... :P

You wont think that when it falls to shit after a couple months. It's just corrugated cardboard... doesn't have a great shelf life.

I'm looking at my NES Action Set cardboard box from 1989 right now... Of course cardboard holds up.

WTF at the Turtles set. I was dead set on buying it, but not anymore. Fuck shitty design packaging. Why not add a regular Blu-ray case inside the box? What are these studios thinking?
