What's with all the bullshit ads and warnings now leading up to the main menu for the film? It seems like all of them it's a chore just to watch the freaking movie. It's getting worse than VHS.

Can't you just skip past them? I'm pretty sure that all my BDs allow me to do that. Pretty sure, because once the disc is in the machine I'll slip into a semi-comatose state.

Are you renting blu rays? I've been noticing that rental copies are packed full of ads you can only skip by fast forwarding and then lack any special features.

Nope, all of them are bought. Not all of them you can skip. I try menu, top menu, and skip on my ps3 and doesn't always work. Some you can't because it's a bunch of long logos like they have with some video games. Inglourious Basterds takes a little long but nightmare before christmas the other day was awful. Hey Kintaro, out of curiosity does that include netflix or actual b&m movie rentals?

oh fuck.

is there an issue with the live free die hard bluray? I was watching it and it got to where mclane just downed the helicopter with the car and then it seemed to crash. And right after when I rebooted, the machine didn't detect the bluray. Then I powered it off and used the eject button and it came out. I rebooted again, popped it in, and it took a bit longer to read (but it does) but now, the bluray won't start.

I sure hope my PS3 blu diode isn't dying. :'(

I had almost that exact thing happen to me while watching Public Enemies last week. I looked at the back of the disc and there was some blue stuff on it. I took it back and got a new one and it worked fine.

So maybe its the disc

i agree with you, there are some movies that take fuckking forever. i think my recently purchased house of flying daggers or Oceans 11 took a long time. however star trek was quick

Ya, it's really hit and miss but it's much more apparent recently. And wtf at the German's pipe in the beginning of inglourious basterds? That thing is like a ram's horn.

just watched GALAXY QUEST on bluray and I want/need a sequel. :{ Too bad it never gonna happen. really enjoyed it, everything was spot on and I'd forgotten about a lot of the plot. Very entertaining.

my die hard4 bluray is fucked. Watched a bit more today and when he punched out Maggie Q in the car, it crashed again. I wonder what is wrong with it, it looks fine. Bought it ages ago (1+year) and just opened it.

/sigh

I watched Crank 2 last night. What a bat shit insane movie, totally bonkers. Loved every second. Stellar PQ and sound (DTS-HD MA), it really popped nicely in every possible way.

Okay ps3 bluray playback must be dying. Just had a different movie mr Brooks. Freeze on me. Getting the latest firmware now and praying that it fixes it

* yup dying. Just did it again. oh noes.
* It's a firmware issue.

You are losing connection in the middle of the movie and your PS3 tried to reconnect. That reconnect is causing a disruption in Bluray playback.

What you need to do as someone else mentioned earlier is disable your wireless connection. You cannot just log out. You cannot yank out your ethernet cable if you are using a wired connection. Some people have stated that unselecting the "Auto Login" feature works. But the best way to avoid any freezing is to disable the internet connection completely.

eh.. sounds like this could the problem. Trying this again shortly. I'm kind of pissed off right now

Mine was a launch 60gb and di the same, exact thing. Within 24 hours it wouldnt recognize a BD disc at all.

I hate Disney Blu-Rays.

First 2 pages of warning text
2 trailers of Peter Pan "HERE WE GOOOOOO!" I already have a Blu-Ray player, I dont need to hear how awesome it is in each and every Disney movie. Advertise that on DVDs instead.
THEN 7 trailers of upcoming movies.

THEN a annoying menu, I want my movies to start playing immediately, if I want to change something let me press the Pop-Up menu. But even the Pop-Up menus sucks, it resized the movie to a 480x240 screen in the upper right corner, the silly menu takes up the rest.

- Todays developed country problem brought to you by Forsete -

In other news, the image quality on Secret Window was more like a upscaled DVD. :(

The best about that trailer is you can't even get Peter pan on Blu-ray, and probably won't for another 6 years or so, yet there it is in HD..

I actually like that trailer because it gets me crazy excited for all those Disney movies to be on Blu-Ray, especially Aladdin and Lion King! :D

The BD ads that run before the movie are the most ridiculous thing. They drive me nuts.

"Hey! Buy this new format that you've already bought! Don't buy the one that you had before that didn't have these ads on it as well as all the upcoming ones that you'll have to skip through!"

Criterion does it best: the Criterion logo is actually the loading screen and then it goes straight to a simple menu that doesn't go through a stupid animation before the options pop up, and one click will take me directly into the movie.

I used to like Warner ones that went directly into the movie without even a menu, but I got fed up of them not defaulting to HD audio, necessitating a trip into the menu while the movie was playing to switch it over.

I don't know why anyone thought it would be cheaper. The Amazon deal was about 60% off MSRP and Best Buy's is always 50%.

Dunno either. :( Hopefully amazon has it on sale again soon.

Especially Disney advertising things you can't get on that format and probably can't for another decade. I forget one company but one boots right into the movie and you have to press menu to go to the menu.

yay pop-up menus?

Whatever happened to the Metropolis Blu-Ray? Last year when they found the near complete print in South America, they said they were going to restore it and release it on Blu-Ray and DVD in 2009. That obviously didn't happen. Has it been canceled or are they still working on the restoration?

I have heard rumors about this coming out next year but apparently the complete print was in "deplorable" condition. Definitely up there with LOTR EE as my most anticipated Blu-ray release though!

Got a bunch of Blu-rays at the local blockbuster that is closing down, all for $10 each:

Face/off
Taken
Gran Torino
Drag Me to Hell

Only watched Face/Off so far. I was hoping it wasn't just my nostalgia telling me that this was a sweet action movie, and thankfully it wasn't :) The picture quality is really good. Can't comment on the audio since I'm just using my TV speakers.

Warner Brothers on HD DVD. In fact, that format got it right when it came to what people want when they pop in a disc. The most you got was the Universal/HD DVD logo to sit through.

Picked up the Planet of the Apes 40th Anniversary BR set. Absolutely amazing packaging on this thing. 200 page book in the middle with photo's and info about the movies.

Picked up 500 Days of Summer for $19.99 with the Target $5 coupon, then came back and got Tinkerbell & The Lost Treasure for my daughter for $5 and tax with the $10 mfc coupon and the Target $5 coupon.

I love coupons.

I'm kinda wanting to get some import BDs from Amazon UK... Red Cliff, District B13/Ultimatum combo and Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon. Would cost me about $50 shipped to the US. Any feedback on those selections? I loved the first District B13.

Side note: I haven't seen the movie yet, but I can't wait for a domestic/UK Blu-ray release of 20th Century Boys. Started the manga (thank you, public library!) and its sucking me in!

Anyone pick up the Champloo set that was recently released?
The usual places whose reviews I follow haven't done it yet, if they will at all.

I'm curious as to how it's turned out, love the series.

The Bourne set is quite cheap, too.

DB13 Ultimatum isn't nearly as good as the first one and Red Cliff is coming out in NA on BR.

I know it's screening in one or two festivals early next year, so the restoration is done.

Thanks. The only real reason I'm interested in Red Cliff right now is cause its pretty cheap... DB13 Ultimatum is probably more of the same, but I'm okay with that. Haven't heard anything about a US release, that's why I was wondering if I should buy it. I'll see if its coming out here then maybe just give it a rent.

Hmmm... just checked and there's no listed blu-ray release for Red Cliff in the US. Also, if there is, it may be the edited version. And District 13 Ultimatum doesn't show up either for US release... still tempted!

I am interested in the import of DB13 Ultimatum blu ray, since it has both films. Magnolia has picked up distribution, so early next year it is going into theater release, but there are no dvd/blu ray details at this time...which is a bummer.

Yeah, that's why I'm still thinking about it, too. I missed out on buying the first movie's BD, so I figure its cheap enough for me to import and get both movies.

Red Cliff is coming out on March 30th, two editions, one for the full-on, 2-disc massive picture the Chinese got. And one for the expedited international cut the rest of the world got.

Considering you would get two movies for the extended edition, the price kinda reasonable for the 2-disc set. District B13:2 is probably months away, Summer-ish or so, from its home video release.

Yea I got my mine from Amazon for $45 w/ free shipping. I watched the first 3 episodes and man it looks glorious in HD, sound is terrific also. Samurai Champloo is the first anime series I bought in BluRay and I wish my other anime was in Blu-Ray as well.

I like how the edited version costs more. Anyway all I want to know is if it's going to be 7.1 or not, otherwise I will just keep my UK version, which you can buy now and still costs less than the US release so far. Did they dub it for theaters, and with the full version have a dub... I wonder.
