How's Generation Kill? It sounds awesome by the description. I'm thinking of jumping on it for the price it is right now....

Probably my favourite TV show of all time. Great characters, dialogue, comedy, action and overall intellegence. The Blu-ray picture and sound quality is immense too. BUY IT!!

Do ho ho! I found out my mom ordered 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner Blu-rays when I don't have a player. All Amazon orders done through my account are emailed to me :D

Anyone got the Prisoner bluray set? Any good? It's like £30 on Amazon at the moment.

Exquisite, and from what I remember, the UK version comes in a much nicer box. I can't find the review that sold me on the set, but even after only having a chance to watch a few episodes off the Blu-ray, I was floored by the image quality. Not that that really matters, since the show sells itself, but if I hadn't known, I would not have believed anyone who told me that it was made in the 60s. It looks that good.

In short, go go go.

I've been so hooked on Supernatural I haven't started mine yet :(

I want to get into that, but I just. Don't. Have. The. Time. I love what I've heard about it, though: (not really spoilers, I don't think, just one-off episode summaries)
In-show fan conventions for the two main guys? A rival team that's utterly inept at what they do?
It sounds phenomenal in a lot of ways, but I honestly can't justify jumping into a five-season show at the expense of schoolwork and friends and social life, even if I really, really want to.

But yeah, pop in the first Prisoner disc. You'll be utterly amazed.

reading that spoiler, the first thing I thought of was the Pokemon cartoon.

Oh, god. Now that I think about it, yeah, that sounds about right. (But from what I've heard, the
rival team isn't an ongoing theme. They've popped up in maybe 2 episodes so far out of the 5 seasons
. But where's Costanza at? He's actually seen the show. Get back in here.

Alright, got it along with all of Pushing Daisies & District 9. I love The Wire too much to pass up another work from David Simon.

Paper Heart sucked. Not even sure why I rented it. I wish I had gotten District 9 or something for this weekend instead. ugh, Netflix really sucks sometimes.

Picked up Rock'n'Rolla, Blades of Glory, and Dexter Season 1 on the cheap today at boxing day sales.

One of the disc trays in the Dexter case is all fucked up and broken, are you guys having much luck taking these back to the store to get a new copy in a case like this?

I need to get me some more empty cases for backup, I wish they didn't cost me twice as much in shipping as the cost of the cases :lol

Got Close Encounters Blu for $19.99 at Best Buy...good deal imo

Now im just stumped on which version to watch, been a long time since I've seen the movie.

Goddammit. I just pulled the trigger on the UK Battlestar Galactica complete series set. $166 shipped. ~$40 less than the US version with the crazy-ass packaging.

I will watch it and I will enjoy it and I will love it, all over again, but dammit if a little piece of me died inside when I hit Submit. That's a lot of money.

so this works with any US player, no problems like that Life set?

id say that bsg set is worth it for the packaging alone, the us set is abysmal, and pretty embaressing to say the least, i know when my old man came over and saw my bsg bluray set he made fun of it for like the rest of the evening

When the fuck is City Of Ember coming to Blu Ray.

It's such a random movie to be DVD only, especially since it was released after Blu Ray hit the market and it's from a major studio.

Watched this the other day and it looked glorious.

I've also watched this:

and really enjoyed it. It looked and sounded incredible. I'm struggling to see where the masses of criticism came from.

It is out on BD in Region B, assuming you have a non-PS3 BD player. Not sure why Fox didn't bother releasing the BD version here since they did release the DVD. The movie being a colossal box office bomb shouldn't have had any effect on that.

Picked up and watched District 9 last night and have to say that not only is the movie enjoyable, but the PQ and audio are easily demo material. Definitely one of the best looking BD I've watched all year. Sony seems to know what they're doing with their releases because they looking amazing.

Ok fellas, I know this isn't precisely the thread to be doing this but here goes:

I just watched the BSG intro mini-series last night and thought it was pretty fucking good. How do the next 4 (proper) seasons hold up? I've heard good things but I'd like to know what you guys think. Furthermore, with the BSG boxset at £110 at amazon wold I be a complete fool to not go for it?

Cheers

I put my discs in my binder I use for all my movies and threw the box away. I think I still have the crap-tastic individual season sleeves/cases though.

It's worth getting. It sags a bit in the middle of seasons 3 and 4, but that doesn't stop it being one of the best sci-fi series of recent years.

Question: I watched District 9 the other day and the aspect ratio was different to the other Blu-ray movies I've watched (no black bars, for lack of technical knowledge).

Was this intended?

Yes. The IMDB entry for District 9 indicates that it has a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, which fits your standard HDTV just about perfectly. Many other films are shot at 2.39:1, which is why those films are letterboxed on your television. The Wikipedia entry on aspect ratio goes into excruciating detail.

They both have fantastic picture quality. You can't go wrong buying either flick on Blu-ray, especially Blade Runner, which was released as a five disc edition crammed to the brim with various edits of the film and extensive documentaries and which can be had for all of twenty bucks.

Anyone pick up the Champloo set that was recently released?
The usual places whose reviews I follow haven't done it yet, if they will at all.

I'm curious as to how it's turned out, love the series.
I just got this set. There was a lot of discussion on whether the Blu Ray is a good thing because:

1. It's an upscale of SD material.. To my surprise everyone is now saying it wasn't produced in HD. I always thought it was, but I guess not.

2. In the process of upscaling, they applied a lot of DNR (digital noise reduction), which is supposed to be a good thing.. But it kills a little detail in the painted backgrounds (like wood grain), and it removes film grain from the image. Seeing as how this was a modern digitally animated anime, the "film grain" is actually an artistic effect to emulate old samurai flicks.

^ Even as I write that it sounds distressing. I bought the Blu Ray upon first seeing it in the store.. But knowing the above, I mulled over opening it for a few days. I even considered returning it and buying the Champloo DVDs, despite waiting for the BR for years...

I opened it and I'm glad I did! For me, the fears were unfounded. Yes, they did soften the image in the upscale, but I see why they would do that now.. It makes for a much more pleasant HD presentation. Considering it's an upscale, it looks great! The colors are wonderful, the lines of the characters are thick and clean.. The backgrounds look great. I'm sure they aren't as "gritty" as the DVD, but they are still detailed while looking far more pleasing for HD. This is the best Ive ever seen it look!

Some might still consider this upscale unfortunate, but I disagree. I'm happy with the Blu Ray! I'd definitely prefer to watch SC in Blu Ray than on any upconverted DVD. If you're at all interested in the show, I say go for it.

I bought it when it was on sale on Black Friday. I was surprised it looked so good too. It's the best looking Blu-Ray movie I've seen so far.
