The HD Movie thread

Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 delayed to December
Dumbo delayed to February 2011
Goddamnit, I kind of knew Fantasia was going to be delayed when there was no trailer or promo to speak of a month from release, its absence from the Snow White Blu-ray was especially telling

Damn, that sucks about Fantasia. I was hoping it'd just get pushed back to April/May.

I picked up some movies this week.. Havent gotten a chance to watch any and I cant decide which I should watch first.

Glory
Big Trouble in Little China
Zombieland
Gangs of New York (remastered edition)

I have like 20 other blu-rays I havent watched as well

Dunno if this is the proper thread for my question, but I'll ask anyway.

When I have my PS3 hooked up to the television in my room, the Blu-ray movie Pineapple Express plays perfectly. However, when I move my PS3 to the living room, the movie can't even get past the initial loading screen. I have two copies of the movie, and it happens with both.

What's the problem? The only difference between working and not working seems to be the televisions, but how on earth could the TV be the deciding factor? Or is it some strange problem with the PS3 disc reader? I switched between TVs four times, and each time it would play in my room, but not in the living room.

I'm seriously at a loss here, and it's pissing me off immensely. Any help would be appreciated. I have no idea why it plays in one area of my house and not the other. Thanks for any help.

are the TVs different resolution? wat are the differences between the two? ive never heard of this...

I think the TVs are both the same resolution (either 720p or 1080i, not sure). I switch between the televisions all the time, but this is the first time a problem like this has occurred. I originally thought it had something to do with the PS3, but I don't understand why it would work in one place and not the other.

what about games? different blurays? any other problems? could be some kind of issue with PE...are you not able to skip past the intro at all? maybe start it in your room and then have it continue playback from where you left off in the other room

I want these....

I've tried a handful of other movies, and they all worked fine. Games, too. The only movie that seems to have a problem is Pineapple Express (both of my copies don't work when playing on the living room TV). They work fine in my room, however.

I already tried to continue playback from the middle of the movie, but the movie refuses to get past the initial loading screen when in the living room. It's really, really weird.

I appreciate the help, though.

Is it connected to the internet when you move it? Could be trying to access BD-Live?

it might be trying to access BD-Live stuff. I had a similar problem when trying to play Gladiator. Had to clear the cached info on the PS3 every time i wanted to watch that movie. Pretty annoying.

Martyrs is only available in france and the UK. No other BR releases are planned.
and guess what: the UK Blu Ray is only in french with english subtitle.
but that's better anyway because the english synchro is a shitfest deluxe.

frontier(s) is the same, just that you can get it only in france(no UK version here). no other blu ray releases of that movie outside of france.

but the biggest asshole-bullshitness is the "Inside"(À l'intérieur) Blu Ray release.
it's ONLY available in f'g sweden. a french movie gets it's only(yea guess what: no other blu ray releases are planned for "inside") release in another country.
what makes it even worse: audio is just french and subtitles are only in scandinavian languages, which makes it basicly useless for only-english speakers.

I really hope all three get a (well deserved) Blu Ray release outside of france and sweden too but it's highly unlikey right now.

Are there any good import sites for us Euro-gaffers? Axelmusic is bloody expensive and I want Where the Wild Things Are. It's so long ago I ordered a DVD/Blu-ray from any other site than Play.com.

Amazon.com?

Where the hell are my BDs of Alien and Aliens? I really want to revisit these films in HD :(

Gladiator re-release rumoured
Along these same lines, consider this Rumor Mill-worthy, but our industry sources are telling is that Paramount will be re-issuing their Gladiator Blu-ray later this Summer or Fall, complete with a brand-new 1080p transfer that was just completed a couple of months ago. (It was done after Paramount and Universal realized how bad the first one was, naturally.) Paramount is re-issuing a number of their BDs this month in new Academy Award-themed packaging. The Gladiator DVD is included in this, but not the Blu-ray, and sources tell us this is because they studio will re-issue the Blu-ray timed to the theatrical or home video release of Ridley Scott's Robin Hood later this year. It MAY also be re-branded as a new 10th Anniversary Edition. We'll post official details as they become available. (And no, we don't know if there will be an exchange program there either.)

Didn't thought that they send DVD/Blu-ray to Europe? But I'll give them a try, at least they're legit. :lol

I just got a multiregion Oppo BDP-80. Really impressed so far - fantastic picture, fast operation, and lots of nice touches. Since it's multiregion for DVDs as well, I can finally retire my DVD player.

Amazon will ship to the UK, but if it's over £17 or whatever the customs allowance is you're fairly likely to get caught on that. Plus the international delivery rates aren't great.

I usually go for one of the following:

PlayUSA - Often very good prices, but the discs actually come from Canada so they might have bilingual English/French covers, depending on the studio - the Where the Wild Things Are entry confirms that it's bilingual. If you don't mind, just go for it.

Movietyme - Prices are usually pretty competitive and they regularly send out £1 coupons to take a little bit more off. All discs are US versions and they often get sent out early, which is nice - I've had American stuff as much as ten days before the US street date.

DVD Express 247 - This is a new, no-frills BD-only sister site to DVD World USA. It's often the cheapest place - Minority Report is up for preorder for £14.99, for example - and has free delivery and guarantees no customs charges, plus all discs are US versions. The only annoyance that I've had is that preorders are charged immediately, so I tend not to preorder stuff until a couple of weeks before release.

I knew that was going to happen after the backlash over the botched version. Glad I held out.

The two things I'd try first:

- do you have your PS3 connected to the internet? It could be looking for an internet connection
- do you have 24p switched on? I had this problem once. I use 1080p24 on my projector but regular 720p on my TV. I reset the HDMI connection to change the resolution to use it on my TV but 24p stayed on. It wouldn't get past the menu on Monster's Inc because of that

So is that Goodfellas 20th anniversary edition going to have a non-shit transfer? Because then I'll sell my copy now.

Edit: Apparently not. I'll just keep the shitty one-disc package I have.

Nope, they recycled the original transfer.

There are Multiregion players? What's the price range on the good ones?

BDP-50?
do you mean the BDP-80? or is the 50 a European model?
I've been wanting to get my hands on the BDP-83 after reading so many rave reviews about it.

Gah, my mistake. I meant the 80. Internally it's the pretty much same as the 83 except for the lack of the dedicated scaling chip.

You should shop around because I don't think this is the cheapest place, but there's a decent selection here. Not exhaustive because mine isn't on there, for example, but it gives you an idea of what's available. Most of them just let you switch region by pressing 1, 2 or 3 on the remote while the player's in standby.

I was really hoping it would happen soon. This better be true.

Also glad to hear that the new transfer of Gangs of New York is solid. Too bad the price jumped again.

Thank goodness. Glad I held out. It's one of my favorites films, and it hurt me so for such a lackluster release.
Same here. I Netflixed the BD to check it out and it was terrible. Definitely glad I held out.

That does look nice. I prefer the design on the UK set but I assume that's a more conventional box rather than a tin, which I'd choose given the option.

>:(((

I'm a french canadian, so, personally, I wouldn't mind having the titles only in french (and they are all french movies, after all). If these were HD DVDs, I could import them from somewhere.... but damn the Blu-ray region protection.
