Snagged the Alien Anthology for 70 bucks from Amazon as well. I don't see it getting any cheaper on Black Friday, so get it while the getting is good.

Here's a good link to a lot of the blu-rays on sale:

Blu-ray deals at Amazon

Also there are a lot of DVDs on sale, but I'm too lazy to list them here.

Worth getting Lonesome Dove for $7.50 if I combine it with another order (in Canada, so it will be more, but lower than I can get here)? I can't quite recall how good it was...

Does The Wizard of Oz on Amazon contain all the special features or is it just the movie?

I believe the $10 Wizard of Oz is the single disc version and does contain some of the special features but the 3 disc Emerald version contains more. Then there is the Ultimate Edition and I'm not sure if that has anything more than the Emerald version.

Question: I'm a Canadian who wants to order some of these bluray movies from Amazon.com (and not .ca since they don't have these awesome deals).

Often times Canadians get charged extra fees with shipping.

However, there's most likely going to be some other deal(s) on Black Friday and Web Monday or whatever it all is coming out of Amazon, right?

So would it make sense to hold off on ordering these movies until Black Friday itself, or should I order them now and have separate orders and possibly pay more for shipping, etc?

The movies I want are Harry Potter (Goblet of Fire), Vicky Christina Barcelona, Taken, and possibly a few others.

Any advice?

I just watched the 'new' cut of Metropolis. Pretty incredible. As much as I respect the decision not to reframe the damaged material for consistency, I do wish they had. Either way, it's wonderful, I recommend it.

I posted these pics in the bluray tuesday thread, but here again for those who might fancy a peek.

I wonder if maybe you could place an order for the ones you want now to lock in those sale prices, but also add in a preorder (like, just randomly, Devil) and choose to have all the items shipped together -- this will stop it from being sent immediately. Then on Black Friday, add in the other things you want, use the option to combine both orders together, and finally delete the preorder from your cart so it will all ship in one box and right away. Make sense?

It is bad form, they even have different extra content.

How is it bad form? MoC and Kino contractually agreed to lock their respective releases of Metropolis so as not to intrude on sales of each others product in their native countries. MoC produced their own additional content and are certainly under no obligation to share it with other distributors. Kino's release, [supposedly] due to an initial manufacturing error, is actually region-free -- that is the "bad form" here, although I can't imagine anyone going to the trouble of importing that version when the MoC is so much better.

Not sure if this has been mentioned in here yet, but I can not wait because I hope the rest follow soon!

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that will release Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (Kaze no tani no Naushika; Hayao Miyazaki, 1984) on Blu-ray on March 8, 2011, on a BD/DVD combo pack. This would be the first Blu-ray release of a catalog title from the famous Studio Ghibli in the US (the 2008 production Ponyo was released earlier this year).

Special features include:
The World of Ghibli: Visit Nausicaa's world in this enchanted interactive experience
Behind the Studio: Discover the film's origins in this documentary, including an interview with Hayao Miyazaki
Enter the Lands: Explore the many worlds of Studio Ghibli
Studio Ghibli Trivia Challenge
Original Japanese Storyboards
Behind the Microphone: with A-list voice talent (on the DVD)
The Birth Story of Studio Ghibli (on the DVD)
Original TV trailers (on the DVD)

I think it sucks for the consumer, i.e. bad form. If you think it's good practice, that's cool, I just disagree.

Either way guys...........is the Kino version of Metropolis identical on the disc, if not in the beautiful packaging? Guess that's all that I care about since there's no option.

In terms of the film, there is a marginally lower bitrate, probably unnoticeable for the vast majority of people. That's it outside of the packaging and disc extras.

EDIT: More details here, http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare7/metropolis2.htm

Fantastic. I take things as they come with region locking since I'm used to having zero options just a few years ago. I understand that international rights can mess with releases, and that companies like MoC would have everything they release as region-free if they could. The occasional rights issue doesn't phase me because I know they're trying.

You're certainly right. Regardless of the specifics of packaging and audio commentaries etc, the film is incredible, it's been given the treatment it certainly deserved. No one is going to be disappointed with their discs, whatever country they're in.

I wanted the US version of Minority Report because it was super high bitrate, I got the UK one, considerably lower bitrate, and I still think it looks incredible. So far, there hasn't been anything I've found that warranted importing an international versions for.

Watched two movies in the past day or so.

Bourne Identity, it was pretty great. I had seen the 3rd film and it made no sense to me at the time, some friends dragged me to it. But now it seems like it was kind of a big departure for the series. At least in the way its shot if I rememember correctly. 90% of the time in the 3rd movie the cam was too close to see what was going on in the fight scenes. Will watch the 2nd movie sometime this week. Hope its as good as the first.

Whip it, Meh. My love of Ellen Page is dying with each crappy movie she is in. I am being a tad harsh but whip it is not a good movie. Drew Barrymore should be ashamed. :lol

Gonna watch 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' tomorrow, hope that movie is good. Wanted to see it for ages.

I am going to order some movies from amazon this week. what do you guys reccomend. Lets assume I have not seen any movies. but they must be on blu :D. Good quality blu would be nice. Bourne looked great...whip it matched the movie...

Tempted to pick up the LotR series, but I heard it's the theatrical cut. Any word on the EE? Should I hold my breath or pick these up?

We're probably gonna have to wait at least another year for an Extended Edition BD Trilogy.

What BR would you guys suggest to really showcase and/or calibrate a 7.1 sound system?

Apparently 3:10 to Yuma has a good 7.1 track - also, I've often seen Red Cliff & Hellboy 2 mentioned as having good 7.1 masters, too.

Hmm, thx for the tips. But it looks like those movies are only available in 5.1 here in Germany.
Any more ideas? I really appreciate it!

This baby has incredibly impressive sound, albiet not 7.1. The BD is region-free too.

I have a question about Akira actually, I'm a little confused which version I should get, there is a remastered one with a new dub which is weaker, is that right? Is there a version of the remastered visual with the original dub?

The old Streamline dub is not available on Blu-ray. You'll be stuck with the newer Pioneer comissioned dub.

Dammit.

The Ultimate Matrix Collection I ordered through wbshop.com is apparently backordered with no ETA.

Just a heads up to whoever ordered it.
