The HD Movie thread

That's unfortunate. I saw that Amazon had a preorder listing for the U.S. Blu-ray the other day and Netflix put it up on streaming in HD a week or two ago.

DVD Beaver can suck my balls.

My copy of Exit Through the Gift Shop came today. The PS3 recognizes the movie, as the graphic for it shows up, and it loads the warning screen. Then it won't go any farther.

That really sucks and I feel like it's sort of my fault. :\

Some additional research leads me to believe that the disc is in fact region-free (people are playing it in some off-the-shelf Blu-ray players, and it reads as region ABC in a PC BR drive), but the menus are in 50hz, which the PS3 can't display. I'm trying to find if there's any sort of workaround...

You didn't force me to buy it. :D

I was looking around online, I can't find much about it at all. The disc is definitely region free based on the PS3 knowing exactly what it is, and the 17 seconds of warnings and studio bumpers loading up... Unfortunately, you can't skip ahead at all during this 17 seconds, all that stuff is locked out.

Yeah, it's coming out in March.

Oh well, looks like I'll watch it again on Netflix, while waiting for the NA Blu-ray release in a few months... dammit. This is my favorite movie of 2010.

Has anyone watched the Criterion release of Cronos yet? It's on Netflix now, and the movie appears to be filmed/processed at around 12fps. None of the reviews out there mention any framerate issues; not even that it was an artistic choice. The only other forum I saw this mentioned on made it sound like it was on the disk release as well.

This may be a shot in the dark but have you tried deleting the data that gets loaded when you first boot up the disc then trying again? I had an issue where Iron Man and Predators would look like they are about to start then it's just a black screen. I deleted the data and restarted the disc and it worked.

The data should be in the video section of the XMB. I don't remember what the folder is actually called but I think it's BD data. Go in that folder and delete the movie data that is giving you an issue. Then start the movie again.

Netflix's encode is absolutely, unquestionably botched. Seems like there are more and more errors in the streaming content recently (movies only running for a portion of the actual length, squashed aspect ratios, skipping or stuttering, etc) and there isn't even a way to report the problems accurately -- only a box to check that says the picture is "unwatchable." For a company who's putting the entire future of their business model into streaming, you'd think they would be more careful about this stuff.

The Man From Nowhere. March 8th 2011

FUCKING A!!!

Just pre-ordered

The Man From Nowhere (2010)

Taesik, a former special agent becomes a loner after losing his wife in a miserable accident and lives a bitter life running a pawnshop. He only has a few customers and a friend named Somi, a little girl next door. As Taesik spends more and more time with Somi, he gets attached to her. Then Somi is kidnapped by a gang, and as Taesik tries to save Somi by becoming deeply associated with the gang his mysterious past is revealed..

Disappointed with the Minority Report transfer. I know the movie was shot and had another pass done over it to emphasise the bleached lighting and grain, but it can look pretty shitty in a lot of scenes.

Amazon has Beauty and the Beast for $14.99. Bought.
Still need to get Fantasia though, but it's still too expensive.

It's between $25 and $28 at most retailers in Toronto during sales and post-Christmas shindigs. I managed to use the Best buy coupon and got it for $25 the day of release as well.

I'm really disappointed at this Disney Vault bullshit lately. WTB most of the 90's era 2D films in bluray now, particularly Aladdin, Lion King and Pocahontas.

I was wondering if something was up with my connection. I couldn't even watch 10 minutes without having to turn it off. :(

Just let anyone know that missed this. It is now available for 15.99 pre-order price.

Hmm.. its tempting at that price but I dunno... I kind of want to see a review of the disc first.

Disney is releasing Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King in 3D on Blu-Ray this year.

Apparently the 3D release of Beauty and the Beast in the cinemas was mind-blowing from the few reviewers that saw it.

Wish it had gotten a wider release.

You talking about the one in IMAX years ago with the added song? Or was there one more recently?

Define shitty.

Noisy. The movie had a bleach pass run over the film because Spielberg wanted it to look gritty, but there are just some scenes where the artifacting becomes so very pronounced, that rather than simply trying to preserve the film grain like they did in the SPR transfer, its like they looked at what they had to work with and said 'Fuck. That.' for a lot of scenes.

Weird I feel like they removed a lot of the grain and noise and sharpened things up a bit

My ps3/blu ray player died in the middle of the day on New Years Eve so we spent the evening watching 1080-upscales of the star wars trilogy VHS.

oh god :lol

the sad thing is the non-anamorphic DVDs aren't much better...

Watched the Dali short that's on Fantasia 2000 and...well. Um, that was interesting. I couldn't help but think if I was somehow not of the right mind it would make more sense. Also, is it supposed to be jumpy? Like it's animated at a slower rate than it's being "projected"?

Both Lolita and Barry Lyndon are currently being prepared for Blu-ray Disc release by the studio in 2011. They also hinted that the films are going to be available both as singles and as part of a new Stanley Kubrick Blu-ray Collection.

Now officially dated for a May release in France. Their Blu-rays are almost always region-free, and although French releases often have forced subtitles, Warner tends to release identical editions worldwide. There's a good chance these will be import-friendly for the impatient.

More news from France: here comes Jurassic Park.

From blu-ray.com
During an extended interview with French site Ecranlarge.com, Eric Legay, marketing director for Universal France, revealed some of the catalog movies that the studio intends to release on Blu-ray in 2011, which prominently include the Jurassic Park trilogy and Brian DePalma's Scarface, along with some westerns and more Hitchcock.

The studio will also release some westerns on Blu-ray, including Winchester 73, Shenandoah and High Plains Drifter (apparently one of two movies starring Clint Eastwood that the studio plans to release this year).

Universal will also continue releasing Alfred Hitchcock movies on Blu-ray, but Legay noted that the flow of titles might be limited by the need to remaster them with the same level of quality as Psycho.

:O

Just gimme the first one thanks.

Not liking this trend of studio releasing big boxset of every movie in the series and either buying the sequels you don't like to get one movie or wait a year or two. (ahem Alien)

The Digital Bits' source says that the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions are coming to Blu-Ray this year.

What's more, our sources are NOW telling us that WHV (and their now in-house New Line label) is ALSO planning to release Peter Jackson's long-awaited The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Editions on Blu-ray sometime this year. No kidding. We suspect that, now that The Hobbit films are finally about to begin filming, the studio is eager to get more product on store shelves to keep the franchise fresh in the minds of fans. The Extended Rings films on BD are the obvious choice for this year. Farther down the line, of course, there will be the obvious Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D versions of The Hobbit films, and sooner or later an "ultimate" box set of all the films with all new extras custom created by Jackson. Anyway, our sources tell us to expect some kind of official news on all this (re: Rings: Extended and Kubrick) from the studio in the next several weeks.

IS the UK Battle Royale set region free?

Just an FYI, word on the street is that Arrow have confirmed that the upcoming Special Edition Battle Royale Blu-ray will be Region B locked due to licensor demand. Only the Limited Edition is region free and that's just for the two Blu-ray discs. The extras DVD is region locked.

Here's hoping they do a better transfer this time around. Apparently Fellowship theatrical blu was woeful.

Yeeeeessssssssssss. As long as it has everything from the original EEs, and the transfer is good, I'm picking this up in a heartbeat.

I hope they'll be significantly smaller as well, the DVD EEs take up too much space.

For German eyes only. Region locked, GER sub. only. While I personally didn't care much for the film I still would say it's worth to watch. edit. April 15, 2011
not sure if this is theatrical version or the uncut version.

I Saw The Devil is getting a limited U.S. theatrical release (no idea which version of the film) starting March 4th so I hope that means a proper US Blu is coming.

Any word on which Cities will have it? I'm going to L.A. around that time. Hope I get a chance to see it in a cinema.
