So is it for sure that they are still come out on HD DVD though? April is still pretty far hahahah.

Well, unless Paramount cancels it.....

The Pianist certainly looks pretty sharp throughout the length of the film. Worth the $20 I spent.

That one is on my wishlist too.

Ordered Gone Baby Gone BD a couple of days ago. Looking forward to see it.

I saw Good Luck Chuck (Blu Ray), The Invasion (Blu Ray), and Mr. Bean's Holiday (HD DVD) this weekend. I can't believe Mr. Bean was EASILY the best movie of those three. In terms of PQ, Invasion looked best, followed by Bean, then Chuck. But really, they all looked fantastic.

We're at a point where every new release now seems to be looking great for the most part. The Invasion also had the best audio, with kept my sub very active throughout. Too bad the movie sucked, though not as bad as Chuck. Seriously, I even enjoyed Employee of the Month, but this was pure garbage.

not a great movie but FF4: Rise of the Silver Surfer has a great transfer. Fox puts out some beautiful looking blu-ray titles

I watched Assassination of Jesse James the other night and thoroughly enjoyed it. One of my fav movies of 2007 even I watched it in 08 for the first time. It's very slow moving but still highly enjoyable. The acting performances were outstanding, the cinematography was beautiful.

I was wary of the PQ because of the reviews but damn it looked great. Sure some grain, edge enhancement, out of focus shots, muted colours but they were the director's intent, the movie had a very specific look. The detail tho, was excellent so I don't know what people were complaining about, people are too picky.

I also saw There Will Be Blood last night, one of the best movies I've seen. There are not many actors as good as Daniel Day Lewis. Give me this on Blu-Ray as soon as possible please.

Cloverfield will be mine. Day one. Kudos on packing in the regular DVD too.

Finally got Planet Earth (Blu-ray) for my birthday. Haven't watched it yet. I am preparing to be amazed.

Ordered Underworld Evolution, Harry Potter 5, and Pan's Labrynth from Amazon last night (B2G1). I would have ordered more, but money is not in excess for me. Pan's Labrynth is a blind buy, but the others I am looking forward to.

Now to get on with the 5 free by mail offer. I've been lazy about getting that sent in.

I saw this demoed on a Sony standalone and a Samsung forty some inch tv, and there was something..........off. Did the film have a slight layer of grain or was that perhaps bad calibration on the tv or player I was seeing? Also, it was blurry in motion, but I'm pretty sure that was the tv.

didn't find it grainy at all

very clean and sharp-looking

Saw Across the Universe and not only does it have a jaw droppingly high PQ & AQ but the BD-J menu navigation is slick as hell. They have a cool overlay that comes in when you view the menu that doesn't stop the movie, they have bookmarks that actually use the colored buttons on the BD remote. Very cool stuff that I hope becomes more of the standard for the format.

Yeah, and I know the Sony player is top notch (too bad they were selling it for $519 lulz), so it's the tv like I suspected. It still looked great, but the motion blur and stuff kept it from standing out like it should've.

All I want is Transformers on Blu-ray...how long until this is available now? Or, are they going to make us wait until the sequel is released for it to come out?

watched blu-ray stranger than fiction last night.. quite a good film which was suprising for me seeing as it starred pug nose and will ferrell in a semi-serious role.

I eagerly await new stuff-- I haven't seen a new movie in HD in a little while, and my local store seems to miss getting the ones I really want in HD. They have plenty of Blu-rays, but *just* seem to miss getting the ones I want.

I need to go get Run Lola Run next. Anyone see that yet?

wanted to say I just watched constantine and Sky Captain on HDDVD.

Constantine looked pretty good, but just nothing eye popping wow. I cant say there is anything that looked bad about it, solid, just nothing that made me say wow like some movies do.

Sky Captain was the first time I saw the movie. I really enjoyed it in a very campy sort of way. Alot of fun, will certainly watch it again. It looked great in HD in a wierd sort of way, the movie is intentionally blurred, but it still looks sharp in detail. Hard to explain, but it worked well.

I watched Cast Away on BD. In terms of PQ, quite disappointed.

Some of the night scenes were terrible, and overall it didn't get as sharp as it should've. Still, a BIG step up from the dvd. I'd recommend it to any fan of the movie.

From the now-dead thread...

Days like these... said:
I want to apologize to Chemo for baiting him and subsequently getting him banned for Wild Hogs. It's been fun and I'll see most of you guys in the hd movie thread.
Hey Days, it's cool... except I think you are mistaking me for someone else because I've never been banned + I have never seen or talked about Wild Hogs. XD

onix, I have a question about Ps3 upscaling:

I read in another thread that I should set the Ps3 to "double scale" or something like that, but on my tv, doing that causes both vertical and horizontal black bars. I had it set to "full screen" before, but I'm not sure if I'm compromising the quality of the upscale to do that. At the same time, watching a movie with horizontal AND vertical black bars is totally unacceptable, but I imagine that's a function of having a 57" screen.

What would you (or anyone else here) recommend?

god, Universal going bluray is going to cost me a fortune. They had so many HDDVDs I wanted.

Bourne Trilogy, Serenity, Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, Children of Men, Tremors, lost in translation, 40-year-old virgin, 12 monkeys, the thing, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift, Seabiscuit, Van Helsing.

Omg Transformers on Blu!

Oh.

yay. this is our happy home now.

we're all team blu now... so let me recommend The Thing for it's inevitable release. the upgrade over standard definition was incredible, and the film became colourful, detailed and vibrant for the first time. the monsters became lavishly detailed, without revealing any extra seams or wires or any such thing.

one of my favourite movies, and my personal vote for 'if you buy just one Universal catalogue title'.

Any idea when The Matrix and LotR are coming to Blu-Ray?

...and, the only Universal stuff I want is:

Bourne
Back to the Future (first one, not yet released in HD)
The Mummy
Gladiator (GAF hates this movie, lol)
Fast and the Furious (just the first one is enough I think)
Miami Vice
The Good Shepherd
Transformers

I haven't seen The Thing yet.

so, is uni still releasing movies that were announced?

I wouldn't count on it. I am pretty sure that everything that has not yet beenn pressed will see no release. My guess is nothing after March.

I hope we will get sme announcements till the end of the week.

Anyone who watches the dubbed version deserves to be shot. The Spanish track is spectacular, even if I don't understand 3/4 of what is being said.
I don't think there even is a dubbed version on the disc.

I checked out Spiderman 3 on a huge LCD TV at a Sony Store near here...it looked grainy as fuck up-close, but from a distance it looked fine. Is blu-ray not all that hot, or is that a problem with LCD tech?

Its most likely the stock of the film that was used to shoot.

Guys, film naturally carries grain. Shocker.

STOP POSTING YOUR FAKE COVERS GODDAMNIT

I like seeing them but he should at least tag them as fake or we will get I don't know how many pages about when it's coming out. :lol

Image quality hinges on so many things...

Was the LCD properly calibrated?
Is the HD transfer of high quality?
Was the original film grainy as well?
etc.

I mean, if your TV isn't calibrated, the image quality will take a huge dive. Poorly transferred movies look bad as well.

More commonly, some movies are simply grainy. If you see something like a Pixar film, an animated film, or a really high quality transfer, you'd really see the difference. When it comes to movies that are grainy, well, that's simply how certain movies were intended to be viewed.

Going to pick up Michael Clayton and Run Lola Run now, will give reviews later.

Can you just give quick impressions of th PQ from both titles. That's all I need for them because I am on the fence of importing these.

you are a sinner of the highest order. i look forwards to your repetance. you have until the day The Thing hits blu-ray.

My HD-DVD player is not getting packed up until Universal releases Apollo 13 and Warner releases Forbidden Planet on Blu-Ray. Batman Begins too.

Penton-Man says Universal will take up to 3months to release on Blu-ray unless they already had something they were working on...

Link please. As always....

I trust you but I like to read the original post.

A quick note on the anime front from Bandai Visual, as reported by AnimeOnDVD.

"[W]e will continue to release future installments of FREEDOM on HD-DVD / DVD Twin-Disc Format. We do not want to abandon our fans that have purchased FREEDOM 1-3. Retailers will soon stop carrying FREEDOM 1-3, but they will be available via our dot-anime.us website along with the future installments."

So, if you were enjoying Freedom (at $40 for 30 minutes, I don't imagine many of you were, but you never know) you can rest assured that they'll be finishing the series.
