Just watched Vacancy on Blu-Ray.

It's a really good transfer, the black levels are great (and they need to be, this is a really dark film).
The picture is sharp throughout. It's a claustrophobic film in a lot of contstrained environments so not natural territory for hi-def demo material, but still looks surprisingly good.

Movie itself disappoints a bit after a solid build up, tapering out in the second half. Still its short and pacely edited, running at around 80 mins. Worth a look.

That's the same way I feel about Vacancy.

In regards to what HD movies offer in sound, what's the difference between Uncompressed PCM 5.1, True HD 5.1 and regular 5.1?

Which one should I use?

I'm not Korean, and I don't read subtitles when I don't have to. Regardless of the poor dub, the movie still would have been pretty silly, watching it with the english dub just gave it more of a 70s feel.

I have no words >_<

Okay, yeah I do. I have never, NEVER watched a movie with dubs that came across as well as when reading subtitles.

Assuming it was silly based on the dub is borderline insanity. Go watch Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon with English dubs. It almost seems like a charictature of poorly dubbed, low budget 70's Kung Fu flicks. It's like a SNL skit or something.

Then watch it with subtitles. While its hardly a treatise on script writing and high drama, it at least maintains a serious tone throughout.

Even with animation it is the same, which is why Appleseed is going to piss me off.
English voice actors sound like they are in a booth reading lines ( which of course they are ), even the best at it sound that way.

hey what are some other websites besides highdefdigest that have good HD movie reviews?

I check DVDFile and DVD Town every now and then, but like all these sites, I ignore their generally whack opinions on the movies themselves and just check up on PQ, AQ, extras. DVD Town especially. My taste and their DO NOT align.

Perhaps when it comes to anime, but I certainly have heard some really really stellar voice acting, especially in Dreamworks and Pixar films.

I like that The Lives of Others didn't even offer an English dub.

Take that friend who hates subs and was forced to read an enjoy the movie!

To Kill A King
Starz Home Entertainment | 2003 | 102 mins | Rated R

30 Days Of Night looked quite nice on BR. An entertaining, if not exactly brilliant, movie. I like to see more supernatural movies and comic book conversions (not so much Marvel or DC stuff...but niche ones like this). Not sure why it says Feb 26 release date as I rented it on Friday.

man Pirates 2 is really really really fucking amazing in Blu Ray. I mean the picture quality is breath taking.

Pirates 3 was ehhh...

I watched all three back to back tonight with my buddy - Pirates 1 was grainy as fuck in the night scenes.

I get my new tv tuesday and 30 days of Night will probably be my first viewing. (then I can give real impressions of movies)
30 Days of Night and Justice League are definite pick ups tuesday, I am interested in To Kill a King but am waiting to hear a little more.

What TV are you getting?

Sony Bravia 52 XBR4
Nice.

T2 has to be coming to Blu Ray in a special or ultimate edition - the price has been dead low on it for quite some time on Amazon, and apparently the transfer isn't as solid some say on here.

I got the original Terminator, and it's okay, not the best, but it'll do - I hope they don't double dip on that too :( - but unlikely.

Chances of No Country getting a double dip this year?

anyone know what the extras are?

It has a few fluff featurettes, nothing else. There's zero chance of a packed special edition.

I personally thought Maelstrom > All of Pirates 2 visually.

Well Crash got one later on. Judging by the crappy extras, I think we should at least get a commentary unless the Coens are of the kind that don't do commentaries.

Does anyone know when we'll start seeing more anime titles? I know the new Appleseed is coming in a few weeks and I'm pretty amped to get it, but there are so many titles I'd like to see released. Aren't most features and seasons aired in HD in Japan now anyway?

The Coens don't do commentaries. The Fargo SE had a commentary but not by them.

Can't wait to own No Country for Old Men. Has there will be blood been announced yet?

edit: oh wow Gattaca is coming out on March 11th too? <3

wow I kinda want that, I'm guessing it has all the relevant special features. Why no commentary though, I really hate buying something that doesn't have a commentary, even if the commentary is not praised by reviewers (I find most of them to be enjoyable).

and WTF at hddigest being down (the BD side at least).

Review of Gattaca BD (cached page)

I missed out on a number of Blu-Ray releases during the holiday..now with that being said I might pick up Lost with 30 Days of Night on Tuesday.

Saw Ocean's 13 BD. What a disappointing film in terms of PQ. Looked SD for the most part. Only certain daytime shots of vegas looked good. All the indoor scenes looked terrible. One scene in particular, with Bernie Mac's orange coat, looked about as awful as I've seen HD look. Even my wife commented on how disappointing the PQ looked.

I'm guessing it was director's intent for the movie to look that grainy and oversaturated?

I think so.

I hjad the same reaction, btw-- unless I rented the DVD, I don't recall. I was extremely disappointed in the movie as well. I really like the first two, as fluff-- this didn't even deliver on that front.

wow...guess i'm easy to impress, as I thought the BD of Ocean's 13 looked great =/

wasn't so much about the fine detail (cause there wasn't much), as the colors and fidelity of the picture that really impressed me

Run lola run on BD?

I watched it over the weeked. Looked very nice, with some natural looking grain (and film dust/scratches) and a bit on the soft side. The movie was pretty low budget to begin with and ~10 years old, but it looked about as I would have expected it to in HD. 3.5 - 4 stars (out of 5) for the tranfer I'd say.

Fun movie though!

Highdef Digest's review is supposed to be up, but it isn't working at the moment: http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/1282/runlolarun.html No idea what they gave it.

I realize this isn't a movie, but if there is anyone here with a PS3 that hasn't downloaded the latest Wall*E trailer from PSN, you are really missing something. I can't wait for that to be released on Blu Ray. Simply spectacular.

The one that ends with him riding the spaceship or is there a new one?
