oh wow

So bought.

Why not? Pixar was definitely inspired by them for the wall e head design.

BTW, I'm in San Francisco for a data conference. Any west coast HD movie gaffers here? Where would be a good spot to pick up some HD movies in San Francisco?

I'll be here 'till Saturday.

No they weren't.

From the Wondercon Wall-E panel where some idiot tried to call out Andrew Stanton on it:

Short Circuit was brought up and Stanton said in all honestly he’s only seen that movie once and while it might have subconsciously had an effect on Wall-E’s design the main inspiration came when he was at an A’s game and someone gave him a pair of binoculars. He spent an entire inning just playing with them, moving them up and down. “Happy, sad, happy, sad…” He said you don’t need a mouth, you don’t need a nose to show emotion, just that movement. The rest of Wall-E’s design came from necessity of the story.

Nice retail price on Short Circuit, hopefully that's the norm soon :)

edit: I don't believe he's only seen Short Circuit once, and it had a high-profile sequel as well...

Hey, so I've been catching up with this thread, and I saw the info about the T2 Ultimate Edition and I'd like to import it. Is there a good (preferred) place to pre-order/import this?

Anybody?

Yeah, I'm not buying that explanation either. It's SO OBVIOUS that johnny 5 was an inspiration for the head. They can say whatever they want, it's plain to see.

So in the 90's it was "OMG DISNY U RIPPED OFF KIMBA MY ANIMU FANCLUB BOYCOTTS YOU!

In the 00's it is "OMG DISNY U RIPPED OFF SHORT CIRCUIT MY STEVE GUTTENBERG FANCLUB BOYCOTTS YOU!"

Hey, I'm not attacking them or anything.

I'm just saying it's a good business decision to release Short Circuit about this time.

I know I'll love both movies.
And I know I'll love Wall-E more.

Meh, who cares. Everyone rips off someone these days. See Eragon for blatantly ripping off Star Wars.

Eragon ripped off Star Wars so much that Lucasfilm could rake that kid over hot coals if they wanted to be mean. He just took Star Wars and replaced all of the character names with LOTR name rip-offs.

I could sit here and list off the movies I've never seen even once, movies that are WAY higher on the "high-profile" scale than Short Circuit. You have to remember what is common to one person is completely foreign to another.

Yep.

Well, would you expect him to say otherwise? Even if they are giving a nod to Johnny 5, they wouldn't admit it for possible copyright issues. Johnny 5 is a well known iconic character, I very much doubt anyone in the movie industry doesn't have his likeness ingrained in their minds. Wall-E's head and treads look very similar indeed.

In any case, both J5 and Wall-e are insta-purcases on BRD for me.

Fry's seems to have raised their HD movie prices... They used to be pretty much at parity with Amazon, but I went there today and saw prices that were almost at Best Buy/Circuit City levels!!

It happened immediately after the WB announcement. (unofficial format war end) You're just noticing now?

True Story:

I went to a private religious school in the first grade. I saw short circuit and started throwing around some of the quotes from the "funny" charachter that were fairly risque, and wound up getting kicked out of the school because of it.

Johnny 5 saved me from being one of the kids in the raptorJC gif.

This was my first time going to Fry's since the whole best buy/netflix/walmart/toshiba avalanche happened.

Not everyone is an extreme fanboy. I can't wait to see wall e, but it's hilarious that you'd deny or believe a denial to such an obvious link between the two characters. It's really not a big deal to me or anyone else in this thread. I noticed it the first time I saw the wall e character.

Picked up The Invasion (HD Combo) and Elizabeth: The Golden Age today from Hollywood Video. They were $15 each instead of $10 though, I will probably take them back after I watch them. :)

I picked up Justice League: New Frontiers today. It was much better than I expected. It was refreshing that it focused mostly on the Flash, Hal Jordan, and Martian Manhunter. It makes me sad that the live action movie they are making will probably be horrible in comparison.

Bought Justice League: New Frontier and watched it twice (it's short). It's got gobs of extra stuff that's interesting-- documentary stuff. I'll probably watch the Darwin Cooke comentary as well.

Also rented The Invasion. Looks great. Starts dumb, gets better, gets dumb again.

30 Days of Night looks fantastic. Sharpness is excellent. Colors tend to be muted to stay true to the graphic novel plus it's in the snow. The blood is overly red which adds a really cool effect. I've seen a bit of grain here and there, but it's definitely a winner. On my DLP it has a nice depth.

Kittonwy picked up Michael Clayton and The Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford ON BLU-RAY.

Kittonwy thought Jesse James on Blu-Ray was a-ok.

Kittonwy highly recommends Michael Clayton on Blu-Ray.

Pick up Michael Clayton on Blu-Ray, please and thank you.

Rawr.

SlaughterX said:
Nah, it's not coming up yet, otherwise I would have got that instead of Rush Hour 3... :(

damn, at least amazon has NCFOM for 23.95. Hmm, gonna have to have mom look at the titles for me since I am at school and she doesnt know her login info lol

Run Lola Run was a pretty nice transfer. Good encoding Sony!

First time seeing the movie...
OMG THE CREDITS SCROLL UP INSTEAD OF DOWN :O MIND BLOWN :O :O :O

Just picked up 30 Days of Night, I had missed this one in theaters, so was a blind but, but one I am happy with, PQ is amazing, the movie is WAY bloodier than I had expected, these Vampires don't play nice.

I was curious about No Country for Old Men when it was in theaters, but never saw it, but keep hearing good things, might have to give it a rent upon release.

just a heads up

the "No Country for Old Men" Blu-Ray review is up at HighDefDigest

as expected, brilliant PQ and audio...meh extras

Still on preorder from Amazon for me :D

Still about 50% decided on No Country...

Would rather have There Will Be Blood :/

I wonder what's taking so long for the studios that have now pledged support to actually transition to Blu, especially Paramount since they've already been exposed to BRD production.

Columbia House won't be carrying No Country; they don't stock any Disney/Buena Vista/Touchstone/Miramax product.

Old? New? Blah, doesn't matter. IM GETTING IT!
