The Hispanic Paradox

I don't know about other Hispanics, but I know Mexicans are more likely to move the elderly members of their family in with them. Rather than put them in a home. That probably factors in a good deal.

Random-ass question loosely tied to the thread :

Both my parents are portuguese, if I come over to the US do I turn into a latino or do I stay white?

You're white, just like all other Europeans.

Race has nothing to do with being latino and everything to do with your place of birth and it's culture. While the word can be used to identify people who were born in any of the romance language countries, in the U.S. (and everywhere else in the Americas) "latino" refers to someone born in the Spanish speaking countries.

TL;DR You would not be considered latino in the U.S

but aren't hispanics white? I don't understand, are people from spain considered white or not

Spanish people would probably be "white"

What is hispanic? is confusing though cause there are white, black and everything inbetween hispanics. Its pretty much people that come from spanish speaking countries.

exactly what I was going to ask after reading the OP. It discusses "Hispanic" along side "black" and "white". But "hispanic" itself is an umbrella term that includes black, white, and native populations.

Is it a universal thing amongst all who fall under the "Latino" banner? or just a specific subset of them? If that was already addressed, I missed it.

Hispanics are awesome. I'm really glad that America is turning into a Hispanic country. Beautiful women, great music, great food, cool culture, it's just great.

The US is pretty terrible at labeling different ethnicities.

From wiki:
The U.S. Office of Management and Budget currently defines "Hispanic or Latino" as "a person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race".[34] This definition excludes people of Portuguese origins, such as Portuguese Americans or Brazilian Americans. However, they are included in some government agencies' definitions. For example, the U.S. Department of Transportation defines Hispanic to include, "persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Central or South American, or others Spanish or Portuguese culture or origin, regardless of race."[35] This definition has been adopted by the Small Business Administration as well as many federal, state, and municipal agencies for the purposes of awarding government contracts to minority owned businesses. Still, other government agencies adopt definitions that exclude people from Spain, since there is a distinct ethnic difference (indigenous American or European American). Some others include people from Brazil, but not Spain or Portugal. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission encourages any individual who believes that he or she is Hispanic to self-identify as Hispanic.[36] The United States Department of Labor - Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs encourages the same self-identification.[37] As a result, any individual who traces his or her origins to part of the Spanish Empire or Portuguese Empire may self-identify as Hispanic, because an employer may not override an individual's self-identification.[38]

You'd be considered white though.

No and yes.

Again, just like with "latino", being Hispanic has nothing to do with your race, but your place of birth. Originally it meant anyone born on the Iberian peninsula, but it was then expanded to include anyone born in the countries that were once colonized by Spain. Not sure why the places colonized by Portugal aren't included. In the U.S. however, only people born in the Spanish speaking countries in the Americas are considered Hispanic.

Yes, a Spaniard with light colored skin would considered "white" or "caucasian". Of course there can also be Spaniards of different races as well.

Because the Spaniards screwed up by naming their country after the Iberian Peninsula even though they were not the only country in it. But what really made the Portuguese stop referring to themselves as Hispanics was when the Iberian Union ended and Portugal took measures to differentiate itself from Spain (through architecture, etc.).

So jelly we have no Hispanic women here. Americans don't realise how lucky they are.

Draft is probably referring to those reports that say the Hispanic minority population in the U.S. will eventually bcome the majority if it continues increasing at the rate it is. I still wouln't call the U.S. a Hispanic country if that were to happen though.

Ahhh, alright. I need to brush up on my history. Thanks for the answer!

I know, it was just an example. She wouldn't have been taken as seriously. I don't know man, it's weird seeing a white man playing a Mexican, especially a stereotypical one.

Please tell me you're joking. Hollywood has British actors like Hugh Laurie and Cate Blanchet play American roles all the time. I have friends who are Mexican who are pale and look like any other white person. I think you're being a little strict.

Like all good things Mexican, it most certainly is.

Oh, google translate.

Y si eres Mexicano y Vegitariano, que comes? Puro tortilla y helote? Hasta los frijoles tienen carne o grasa de cerdo

pues lo que pueda..tacos de papa, arroz, queso, tortas sin carne,......enchiladas verdes de queso.....ok ya tengo un buen de hambre...

The Iberian Union lasted from 1580–1640. Portugal had it's own identity (including "architecture") well before that (Portugal was formed as a country in 1139). In fact, it's supposed to be the oldest European nation state.

Soon...

You have to eat frijoles and jalapenos everyday if you want to live a long life. At least that is what my mom likes to say.

I am of Mexican descent and I hate Mexican food.....also don't find Hispanic women attractive at all...

Enchiladas are the worst thing on earth....

*runs*

Hispanic women encompass such a wide range of appearances that I can't imagine how any man wouldn't find ANY of them attractive at all unless they were gay.

That's not the point. Before Spain existed, all of the Iberian Kingdoms identified as Hispanics, since Hispania was the Roman name for the Iberian Peninsula. When The Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon merged, the Monarchs named the country España. That name has its origins in the name Hispania. But as far as I know, the Portuguese still refereed to themselves as Hispanics (I know that Luís de Camões referred to the Portuguese as such in his epic poem, Os Lusíadas). Then the Iberian Union happened. D. Philip I/II respected the interests of Portugal but his successors didn't and the Union split. From that point on the use of Hispanic to refer to Portuguese people diminished until it was no longer used.

What I mean by architecture is that the Spanish were pretty big on Baroque architecture during that time which made the Portuguese differentiate themselves by preferring the plain style architecture. That difference is pretty obvious if you compare the architecture of churches in Spanish vs Portuguese colonies.

Look, about this America turning into a Hispanic country. I love Hispanic people, I'm Mexican myself, but when you saturate an area with Mexican-Americans it really just turns to shit. Gangs, violence, drugs. I know the majority of Hispanics are hard-working ambitious people, but there are also so many rotten apples that are just ruining it.

1800s: Europeans are making our cities shit!
1900s: Blacks are making our cities shit!
2000s: Mexicans are making our cities shit!

History really is cyclical.
